  3. Now I'm just down to JoAnne's .... when do you think that will come out?
  4. We were out that early last year and the crowds were not too bad. The real crazies had already run through on Turkey day..
  5. Now this is just wrong. Of course they'll probably cite some contractual thing obligating stores to be open whenever the mall is....
  6. I make a list in a spiral notebook and cram the ads in there when I head out.
  7. I don't like it either - but its to their loss, because I stick firmly to my list... so keeping me longer doesn't help them. And I weigh my time carefully - sometimes its not worth making that extra trip to save a buck or two, so I'll buy an item elsewhere.

Graze.com has interesting snacks that arrive monthly - pretty good price too. Redbox has gift certificates Pizza place gift cards also a good option Does he like to read? Books and/or book store gift cards are good Does he like outdoor stuff? Around that age, DS always liked to get quality camping gear. A nice cold weather sleeping bag, internal frame backpack, Camelbak hydration system, and other camp gadgets made good gifts...
  14. Walmart carries a very basic model Brother sewing machine that is under $80. Its not fancy - but if you use quality thread, it will be more than adequate for a young person to start with. Don't go with cheap thread! You'll find that it breaks and knots up underneath. Brother 17 Stitch Sewing Machine, JX2517 http://www.walmart.com/ip/Brother-17-Stitch-Sewing-Machine-JX2517/26805131
  15. Give a nice framed family picture to those "have to give a gift" people Tell the extended family that you have massively scaled back this year in order to have the opportunity to spend time with your spouse/kids - then go on a mini vaca for Christmas Eve and Day .... make sure they know you will not be at the extended family gatherings. Heck even if you just go to a hotel in the next town over - it might just be a nice break for you!
  16. These are tasty too - and easy because its a bar cookie Pumpkin Carrot Swirl Bars http://www.verybestbaking.com/recipes/28459/pumpkin-carrot-swirl-bars/?recipeFoodType=100-pure-pumpkin~cookies-brownies-bars
  17. Biscochos also called Biscochitos - a traditional New Mexico holiday cookie (imo, best with lard) Yield: 300 Biscochos Ingredients: 6 cups flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon (freshly ground when possible) ¼ teaspoon ginger 1 pound lard or shortening 1 egg 1 ½ cup granulated sugar ½ cup wine, orange juice or water 1 tablespoon vanilla 2 tablespoons anise seed Sugar and Cinnamon Coating 1 cup granulated sugar ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon Directions: Preheat oven to 350°F. Sift flour with the next four (4) dry ingredients. Cream the lard or shortening until smooth. Add sugar, egg, vanilla, and liquid. Pour wet ingredients into flour mixture. Add anise seeds at this time and knead together. If mixture is too sticky add some flour. Roll out the dough onto a floured board or counter and cut out biscochos using a small-floured cookie cutter or you can put the dough into a cookie shooter using your favorite design. You will have to re-knead and roll out the dough several times until you have used all of the dough. Place the biscochos onto an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for about 8-10 minutes. While biscochos are baking, mix the sugar and cinnamon “coating” ingredients in a wide bowl. Set aside for coating baked biscochos. After baking, coat biscochos with the sugar and cinnamon mixture. http://www.muybuenocookbook.com/2010/12/biscochos/ http://gabrielaskitchen.com/2009/11/15/biscochitos/ http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Biscochitos-Traditional-Cookies/
