Agree, you may be able to get a school discount, but you may not get it until she enrolls there. I suggest either a Dell (dell.com) or HP/Compaq (hpshopping.com). My mother-in-law did the same thing for my daughters when they went off to college. Most colleges publish their recommendations on the minimum specs/features the laptop should have. If you can get those, then you should start there, and raise the specs/features if you can afford to do so. The specs that the school may provide may not provide enough horsepower to play games, edit photos, store music files, etc. I ended up buying the laptops for my daughters, then my MIL just paid me back. What does your daughter plan to do with the laptop? Both Intel and AMD have several different processors. The type of processor you get, along with the amount of RAM and the size of the hard drive should be based on what the laptop will be used for.

I've used Norton for years, but after reading comments on AVG and playing around with it a little bit, I wouldn't hesitate to give it a shot. I just bought Norton AV 2007 a month ago, so I'm good with them for a while longer.

I don't think you're going to find a 32" LCD TV for under $600. Does it have to be 32"?? Also, once you get the HDTV, you're going to need to either order HD service from your satellite or cable company, or get an over-the-air antenna.

I get very nervous about buying things with rebates over $20, unless it's from Microsoft or Symantec. They're both very efficient in processing rebates.

Absolutely no legal leg to stand on with this one. It would have been nice for Office Max to somehow make amends, but they're not legally required to do so. Complain with your wallet and don't shop there again.

I see a lot of post-BF Walmart bashing. I got there at 5:20am just to pick up a few DVDs. They had some weird stuff going on this year as explained above, but Walmart didn't become the world's largest retailer by screwing up. I suspect people will continue to flock there all year long.

Those coupons are applied to "regular" prices. Not only can you not apply to them doorbusters, you can't apply them to normal sale prices.

It depends on what I need, and in any case, I will not get in line before any store opens. For me, it's not worth the hassle and time to save any a couple hundred dollars.

This is all insane and unfair to the people who were waiting there for several hours the entire time. They should figure out some kind of lottery system so no one has to wait.
