  1. I'm just curious how many of you are doing handmade gifts this year as opposed to, or in addition to, purchasing gifts?  How have recent economy changes

What sorts of things do you make for gifts?  Do they go over well?

I crochet and knit year-round, during my kids' sports activities (can't sit still). During hockey season, I travel with my littlest sewing machine and make pillow cases during downtime at our hotel, and once in a great while I'll piece a quilt top. I mostly knit or crochet dishcloths, and a blanket every now and then. I try to make sure that each family we gift to receives at least one handmade item. I used to make aprons and embroider them as gifts, but I think everyone in our circle has one now.

This year I'm thinking about expanding my options; I'd like to sew reusable shopping bags to use as gift bags.  I try to give things that are practical, but that are mostly portable.  I also try to focus on things that are fairly simple to make (i.e. I don't knit socks even though I think they would be pretty portable AND practical. Maybe one of these days)

I accepted long ago that I never saved any money by making something myself, but I'm wondering if any of you have managed to pull that off. I don't worry so much about the cost of supplies or labor because I have a pretty good fabric/yarn/craft stash, and I consider my time to be free, since I'm just sitting there anyway, watching practices and games.  I also get the benefit that, for me, crafting is very calming - when my youngest son is in the net for his hockey team, I need all of the calming influences I can get! lol

    What do YOU make?

We do homemade Vanilla sometimes, bottled up for our family. It's part of their gift. Doesn't really save anything because we use high end ingredients but the flavor is SO much better. We didn't do it last year as the cost of beans was out of hand. I will be pacing my bean order probably this week so that it has enough time to turn into a good extract before we give it out. I know my Father In-law and my sister both love it.

  2. I tried to get the 50" Hisense deal and within seconds it was sold out. I seriously doubt that was all actually people OR they had like 3 of them at the price.

To be honest I hate dealing with any sale on Amazon it's almost impossible to wade through all the stuff they have and I'm just not that patient.

  3. I think with the economy being sooooo off this year and the price of everything being much higher that many are going to have reduced budgets this year.

Ours will be just about the same as the last couple of years, we have less people to buy for now. We will probably spend a little more on the people we buy for though.

  4. This year I want some expensive stuff.

I want an 80"+ OLED TV for the livingroom

Parts to build my new computer.

TV will depend on what deals we find on BF. Computers parts I'm giving a list to my wife and daughter. Some they will buy, some I will buy (probably make it from them anyway).

  5. We don't do "crazy" decorating but last year we did get permanent Christmas lights installed on our house and love them! Endless ways you can customize their colors/motions. Best of all, no more climbing on a ladder! :gdthums:

Very cool. We used to keep a tree up year round and change the decoration on it to fit the holiday/season.

  6. As Black Friday approaches, I am trying to think of more things to look for and eagerly await more sales to start.  Temps are cooling so might have to get some apple cider in the next week or two.

We went and did a haunted hayride this past Friday so we got apple cider and donuts. The season is officially here now lol.

  7. I know it's not quit decorating time yet BUT for those who do crazy decorations that sometimes can start as early as August or September.

I built a light show controller but it's in storage still so I can't yet go all out at our house.

If you're into it what does your yard/house usually look like?

  8. We finally got our almost 16 year old's daughter room painted and new flooring down. I think one thing she would really like is a new bigger TV. Hers is a 32 inch TV and it still works fine, but all the hookups are in the back. So, it's hard hooking anything up to her TV. I think we would like to get her a 50 inch TV and maybe a Blu ray player so hoping to see some good deals for those.

I also hope that Target has their Apple gift cards on sale again this year. I would love to be able to buy enough to pay for at least 6 months of our subscriptions. I would also like to see some other deals on gift cards as well.

Would also like to pick up a few more Switch games.

Our daughter also really wants the Iphone 14 Pro, but it is just out of our budget. I know she would be happy with an Iphone 12 or 13 pro as well. She really just wants a new iphone for the camera. Right now she has the SE. We do prepaid plans and I just can't afford to commit to a contract for 2 or 3 years at 220.00 a month.

Forgot to add a new laptop for homeschooling purposes, so nothing fancy needed.

Usually see some good deals on 50” TVs.
