Thank you all!  My son is home and recovery is - difficult.  He has terrible headaches and no sense of taste, He’s frustrated that he can’t go to school or play his beloved hockey. His younger brother just left for a tournament with my husband, so that’s rough.  I do believe that he will recover 100% but he is worried about falling behind his sophomore year that just started, and how much muscle mass he will lose before he can put on skates again.  I keep telling him that he is here for a reason, and this will all work out. And we have so much to be thankful for.  He can walk.  He knows who he is and where he is, and he can remember most things except for what happened that night (which is good).  We learned that if his head had been turned a different way, or the bike that he was on had been moving, he would probably not be here with us today. We are hoping that his next CT scan will show improvement, and we can start to make plans for his return to normal. Right now it’s just sit and wait, and IDK if you know anything about 15YO boys, but patience is not their virtue lol

I’m a firm believer that recovery is as much mental as it is physical. If he believes he will be better and then puts in the hard work things will get better.

I retired in May.  As a consequence, I am free to do whatever I want without regard to compelling commitments.  Again, as a consequence, I am free to get up late or very early.  For the first time in nearly a decade, I anticipate standing in line for some store opening BF.  Not so much for the Door Busters as for the nostalgia.  Brad, send me a t-shirt and I will post a picture or me in this shirt in line on BF in New Hampshire -- with no consideration for weather or temperature.  I am having SO much fun being a teenager again.

Ahhh retirement, something I look forward to but not sure I will ever get to do. We go out still for the nostalgia also. I always have the week off.

How are we already almost halfway into August? Eesh... Time's been flying.

Little miss Mew (in my profile pic here) has been trying to give mama a heart attack lately with some health issues. Not entirely unexpected at 17.5 years old but I could do without the couple of emergency vet bills I've had to deal with when she apparently was just battling a bug of some sort. Antibiotics and time and she's back to being her spunky self. Go figure. No clue how long I still have with her but these past few weeks have made me more appreciative of the little things like the special moments when she chooses to curl up next to me vs in one of her other favorite spots, when she comes to me looking for attention, etc.

This coming weekend is the annual Woodward Dream Cruise. As a classic car lover, this is one of the events I look forward to each year. I know the traffic on Woodward drives some locals crazy (and I get it) but I love being amongst all the cars from days gone by. Memories of being a kid and riding with Mom or Dad (or both) and having them tell me what the cars were and some little fact about them when we'd see one on the road. I'll be down there Saturday morning/early afternoon before I head into my weekend "side gig", camera in hand to capture some of the best and share with my fellow car lovers.

Looking ahead to the end of the month, I am headed back to Cedar Point and will actually have my coaster buddy back with me, as she's been able to work in a couple days off to come back up for another quick visit. I'm happy to have her join me for that run since I know she loves the coasters as much (or more) than even I do. The day she heads home is actually opening day for one of my favorite local orchards, so we're talking about her potentially staying late enough for a quick orchard visit before she starts the trek back to her place. She's not been up here for that before - firsts are always fun and... She could take some fresh orchard doughnuts home. Bonus. lol

Ya I’m going to miss the dream cruise, and fresh cider and donuts. I used to tell my wife cider was different at the mills. She never believed me until we went one year while visiting. She told me she thought I was crazy until she actually tried it. Now she knows. 🙂

Meanwhile, it's the coldest summer in a long time here in this part of CA.

Man, these low to mid 70s have been just awful. 😎

Ya ya ya just rub it in.

Took my daughter for her high school open house today and we walked all over to see where her classes are.

I thought someone had turned a hose on me with the heat and humidity.

  5. Crazy that I’m looking forward to the lower 80’s temp this weekend. Yesterday I was taking my daughter to marching band practice, car said 113 when we got in, it had been sitting out in the sun all day so didn’t think much of it outside of the leather was stupid hot. Figured it would drop a ton once we were driving. Yeah, never got below 100-102. Heck no that’s way too hot.

  6. We had a good 4th. Did ribs on the smoker, baked beans, potato salad, corn on the cob and Mac n cheese. Yesterday we did leftovers and added some better cheddars. Today I’m doing wings on the grill.

Saw fireworks off in the distance Friday and went to a local farm that did a nice display last night. Today we kind of bummed around the cabin, working on putting up a new fence here so did that yesterday and will do more tomorrow. Going to be a 2 summer job. Doing our cabin and my in-laws next door.

I've had too many friends lose someone they love the first half of this year (hubby for two of them, mom for one, grandma for another), so goodbye, first half of 2025. It's been a rough one.

Got my buddy in town from Indiana this week. We're hitting The Henry Ford/Greenfield Village for Salute to America, Cedar Point for a couple days, Frankenmuth (because Frankenmuth) and she'll get a day of rest before I send her back home thoroughly exhausted and needing a vacation from her vacation. LOL (The cats are enjoying having an extra "staff member" around.)

In garden news, my lettuces (romaine and red/green leaf) have grown beautifully, my dill has created a forest and I am now in harvest mode on all those. Still to come are cucumbers (hopefully), celery, and brussels. Maybe this year I can finally make dill pickles using my own dang cukes. LOL

Hope my GD fam is doing well as we enter these hot summer months. 🙂

I was back in town a couple weeks ago and wanted to do Frankenmuth but didn't get to. I want to go the next time I'm there. I really want to check out the new water park at Bavarian Inn.

I was at a show at Pine Knob on Sunday. 🥵97° before the doors and people were tailgating on the asphalt. I admired their dedication from my air conditioned SUV.
It was still high 80s when the show ended at 11. Still not the hottest temp I’ve ever seen Keith Urban in 😆

I’m kinda wishing this silly hot weather would end. I don’t mind some heat but I do t need it triple digits.

What differences are there between Sam's Club and Costco?  I'm a Sam's member but a Costco is opening near me soon.  Is there a difference?

Some things are cheaper at one some things are cheaper at the other. I got a Costco membership on one of those really cheap deals. Never bothered to renew it. Too stupidly busy for me.
