Dsheppard, I agree that I almost never see the tablets on sale. We can ask some others to keep a sharp eye out, but the sales on them are rare.

You cant lose your warranty by installing ram. If for some reason it makes the machine stop working, you just push two little buttons, out it comes and your computer (and anyone else) can never tell it was even in there.
-
The one you need to upgrade is the little long skinny sticks called ram. SATA is the type of hard drive you have, and you only need to worry about it if it starts to fill. Being the computer user you are, I would recommend one of the following: Deciding you definitely will be getting this exact machine-finding its model number-looking up on the manufacturers website what type of ram it takes-look at ads and see if it is on sale-buy it when you buy computer and we will walk you through install, or think about this pc-pick up whatever you pick up-ask question again in the technology section of forums after you get it home and we will help you through the above steps and likely find a good deal on it, or lastly, buy pc-take it to geek squad etc, and have them put in the extra ram- pay price premium but have someone else worry about doing it right.

not a problem. Please make sure to ask me and the others any questions you have about your needs/new machine before you buy it as you definitely can return it for a few days, but you can never get the deal back.

So far you have a few opinions above. I cant speak to these particular models, but as stated above I have a good history w/ samsung's large widescreen monitors. That being said, since you are not in my town I will give you the heads up that there will be a much smaller line at staples (i.e. greater chance to get what you want), so if there is nothing that you really have to have at CC, that would be the dealbreaker for me.

Most bang for buck is desktop, not only cheaper for exact same hardware, but also much easier to upgrade. That being said, most people dont want to lug their desktop around the house. If you want an amazing desktop this BF for a great deal, get in line for the m8226x at CC, I cant find much of anything better that will meet your particular needs for the next 5-6 years with possibly a video card upgrade in 2 years. You can go much cheaper to meet your needs now, but if you want something that is on sale this BF that will take care of you for quite a while in desktops, this should do it and then some. As for laptops, photoshop use (plus the prominance of Vista right now) tells me that you need to either buy a laptop w/ 2GB of ram, or (and it is relatively easy) upgrade a 1gb ram machine to 2gb. If going from 1 to 2 gb key here is to minimize your cost by buying a laptop that either has 4 ram slots (not that common) or that the 1gb is 1 stick. Otherwise you get 2 x512 sticks that you pretty much toss and put in 2 new 1gb sticks. I would advise checking out the machine in person and if it is 1gb asking them to make sure it has 4 slots, or if not ask them to open the display model and see if it has 4 slots or 2 slots with one open. If you get a machine w/ 2gb you skip all this but you pay a price premium. Hope that is a good starter for you, ask anything else that pops up.

First off, almost every laptop will have a 14.1" screen or bigger, so finding one over 7" should be super easy. Due to Vista, yet again almost every laptop will come with at least 1GB of ram (I am assuming you meant that instead of 1MB), if you have a copy of xp, it is not a problem at all to downgrade. Reading you spec needs, then the only thing we need to do is find something that meets your $ and weight requirements. Most will have a cdrw & dvd. Will see what I can find.

RAM. then later probably a video card.

see here for different levels of graphics cards comparisons. Look halfway down the page this graph will give you approximate levels. http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/11/06/best_graphics_card/page6.html#summary

I will be rather busy during the day guys, but will try to get back to you sunpop and vermont with some good info this afternoon. Sorry, but I did not want to do it halfway.

for $449 you could have gotten a much better laptop this week at office depot (see the first page of their ad). It had a better cpu, bigger hard drive. Intel has SOME processors that are faster than the fastest AMD has out. Price for performance, you will pay a lot more for the average intel than the average amd cpu. i.e. if you pay $140 for a processor you get a faster amd than intel. See: http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu_2007.html?modelx=33&model1=914&model2=882&chart=444 top of page is getting more computing for each $, bottom is less computing for each $ spent. Otherwise, one is not better or worse than the other.
-
the best deal is only buying however much you will fill up and use before it is outlived. Brand name I trust is WD. Cant speak positive or negative about the others
-
Biggest advice to you vermont is to get an external hard drive, the bigger the better (500gb). That way no matter whether you get a 100gb or a 160 gb internal hard drive you will have room for all your pictures and videos. What do you do to your pics and videos? Just save, watch and share them, or do you edit them on the laptop? This answer will make a very big difference in what type/level of pc you need.
-
The amd x2 laptop sounds like a good deal, and like it will fit your needs well. Definitely avoid overpaying for that proprietary Intel Centrino package you mentioned.
-
I would avoid the intel and definitely go w/ the amd. AMD's will allow you to upgrade the same motherboard with a much faster AMD chip for the next 2 years per AMD.
