  1. I know this does not help you at all, but you are lucky to even be able to pick an insurer, here in florida, the only choice I have is the state run Citizen's insurance because almost all other insurers have backed out of the state. Cost on my $200,000 house is $3000 yr and I am above the highest evacuation zone, "in the safe area". Sorry, just had to keep up complaining so this does not happen to the rest of the country!
  2. Just got them both back, so who know's, maybe they are getting better. I think 2-3 weeks is pretty good turn around.
  3. Quickest things to check out that you can get without any thought etc are all from Circuit City this week. DV6426US DV2419US and DV9429US which get progressively more expensive. the first covers all the bases. The second adds ram, a faster processor, built in bluetooth and wireless N. Third adds more hard drive, faster processor. There are more small differences, but those are the basics that will likely matter to you. Give them a look. They meet your given needs so far (fast, HP, a good deal), and also most of it is instant savings, not MIR. Given more info and time I am sure myself and others could give you the "perfect computer and deal", but I would start by looking at these three and the price circuit city has this week and seeing how they feel.
  4. No problem. I would recommend that she buy some ram for it (that is why it freezes with many things open and is so slow) I build desktops to order as my hobby. As such, and having friends who were CS majors in college and now work as network admins, NSA security, computer testing, I get a lot of info, contacts and experience. As for your next computer: What are you going to do with it How long do you realistically hope to keep it as your main computer before your next one How much do you want to spend How much are you willing to spend Do you definitely want a laptop, or is a desktop possible (I admit I know more and keep more up to date on desktops)
  5. you're kidding me 224mb ram????? 1. it would be 256mb 2. You should have 1gb if you want fast performance, not 224mb. Processor is okay, but that "224mb" of ram is KILLING you. 512 really should be minimum for xp, but for a real nice experience I recomend 1gb minimum. if you know as little about the computer as you state, adding that and having someone clean it should make a major difference and should cost you pennies compared to buying something new. ($75 for 1gb ram maybe, and $50 for a system cleanup) It will not be the fastest on the planet as it is a little older, but for maybe $125 it will be a brand new computer to you I almost garuntee!
  6. Any current system should do that, but what nags at me is why your current system does not work. Mind if I have the stats of your current system (processor, ram, hard drive, os) and what you have running to keep it clean (diskeeper, sandra, spybot, etc)? If it is not that old, no matter the processor, then there is something going on with the computer. You should not see pitiful performance no matter the processor. Likely amount of RAM and/or something (virus/adware/spyware etc) else. Intel or AMD, recent computer should not be SLOW to the point of annoying you.
  7. oh sorry, just noticed you were asking jsmst35 not me.
  8. Ohh, nothing, they actually have the best price/performance ratio right now, and therefore most of the mid segment market is going to AMD, it is only the high margin top end market where Intel is owning the market. That top end they dont want to give up that margin (not to mention Intel has gotten all the margin spent on keeping exclusivity <see intel anticompetition/monopoly law suits>) so they are not giving out much in the way of discounts and such. So stationchief, the fact is that there is nothing wrong causing me to have problems coming up w/ deals on intels, it is just the reasons I listed about AMD is why.
  9. All the special deals I have are with the fast AMD processors, due to my connections I do not have anything on Intel's anymore. Will let you know if anything opens up, maybe with sept 10's launch of the barcelona I will get something, but likely it will just be another influx of amd deals as it is amd's barcelona. Sorry.
  10. What you mean this isn't the line for the BF wait...ohhh I guess they are giving out iPhones in this line....dear me.
  11. Went in and checked, 2 rebates, 1 from HP (already got a confirmation that they recieved and are paying it) and 1 from office depot (reciept copy and copy of upc.)
  12. Best regular price I have seen for this computer, then they have $200 in rebates. http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?level=SK&id=636070&N=265489&An=browse That is the online link for info on the M8100n by HP from office Depot, but you have to go in person from what I understand to get all the rebats which drop the price from $899 -$50 OD & -$150 HP = $699 Best buy has same computer on sale, but is asking $899 after rebates just to give you an example.
  13. Thanks so much, 4 dvd's, 25 after shipping!
  14. budget? used for games too, or just school work?
  15. big screen vs light & portable? Just for notes & a little use vs desktop replacement w/ heavy use?
  16. Something like this? http://officedepot.shoplocal.com/officedepot/default.aspx?action=detail&flashbrowse=y&storeid=2279137&rapid=430337&pagenumber=6&listingid=-2092975541&ref=%2fofficedepot%2fdefault.aspx%3faction%3dbrowsepageflash%26storeid%3d2279137%26pagenumber%3d6%26rapid%3d430337%26prvid%3dOfficeDepot-070729 Have any more specifications besides dual core, 2 gb ram, decent video card? It would help narrow the field some. sorry, just saw the 7200rpm now...that does narrow the field quite a bit on notebooks.
