Black Friday definitely does not have the same feeling to it like it used too. Part of the fun was getting up early, stopping for coffee on the way to the 1st store and standing in line. The thrill of the doors opening and getting the door busters. The last couple years I have found better deals the week before and the week of BF then on BF. I no longer stand in line but go several hours after the stores open after our guests have left. I also did a lot more on line ordering last year and that may happen again this year as we host Thanksgiving dinner and we refuse to change traditions just for a sale. Time spent with our kids and extended family are more to us than being out shopping during Thanksgiving dinner. I really miss the 4 and 5 am openings!

I know last year we stopped in our local walmart just after midnight (BF morning) and the place was dead. Cashiers standing around talking. The cashier who checked us out asked us to call all our friends and family and tell them to go to walmart to shop.

I agree I hope more stores follow .. I could even handle midnight openings but hate these Thanksgiving evening openings.

You can always call them and ask if they have any specials/sales for BF.

Need ad to start leaking soon ... very soon .. .so I can finalize my shopping list. On a tight budget this year with no wiggle room so the sales leading up to and including BF will determine a good part of my BF shopping.
-
I so cannot wait for the ads to leak. I need to finalize my shopping list for my kids and hubby but I cant do that until the ads have leaked. Need to stay in budget and large part of my Christmas shopping will be determined based on the BF sales.

I wish they would bring back layaway year round and get rid of limits of what can be put on layaway. I love love to open a layaway however most of what I am looking to buy cannot be placed on layaway based on their rules. My kids are getting older so we are not buying a lot of toys

I do get wish lists by the end of Oct but by then I am usually 1/4 to 1/3 way done shopping. I do use their wish lists for the pre black friday and black friday sales.

When/why did you start BF shopping? Why do you still go now?

I started shopping Black Friday sales in 1999. We had just bought our first home and money was tight and wanted to make our money stretch as far as possible. Those first couple years I shopped the local stores and would be done in a few hours, of course this was before we had kids LOL. For the several years (add in 2 kids LOL) we would leave home at least an hour before the local walmart would open, stop for coffee on the way and just have fun waiting in the lines outside walmart. Its a small town so you know most of the people waiting. After Walmart we would head back to our house to unload and then it was off to the stores out of town. Some years we would be out shopping until early afternoon and other years we would be out until dinner time. Since we had a mini van and was the biggest vehicle out the group we always took our mini van. A few years the van so stuffed bags would fall out as soon as you opened the door. I miss those days. Now a days my SIL, DH's cousin and I hit the local walmart around 8 pm by then the store is pretty empty so we are able to get in, find most if not all the deals we went looking for and checked right out. Back to our house to unload and then DH comes along as our driver. We stop for more coffee and then head to stores out of town. The last few years we were done shopping and home by 1 - 2 am the latest. I have been finding great deals at some stores during the 2 weeks before leading up to BF and have been doing some shopping on line. For me BF has always been about finding great deals to make the money stretch as far as possible and for the fun we always have BF shopping. -
We put money into a Christmas Club account every month.
-
I have about 20% of my shopping done. Everything was on clearance or on sale with an added coupon for additional savings. The bulk of our Christmas Shopping will be done in Nov in the 2 weeks leading up to and including black Friday.

I have already starting thinking about and jotting down gift ideas. Money is going to be tighter this year so I will trying to get as many deals as possible. We don't head out shopping until dinner/dessert is done, everything is cleaned up and the guests have left which is about 8 pm. The sooner those ads leak the better idea I will have of what my shopping will consist of and at what stores

YAY!!! Can't wait!

We went out shopping Thursday night around 8:30. Stopped at our local walmart and could not believe how empty the parking lot and store was. This was the first year that I ever used a shopping cart for Black Friday shopping. We headed to a few other stores including 2 different Targets. The first Target was packed but the 2nd one was not. We ended up back to our local walmart around midnight as I forgot a couple door busters from there on my earlier trip. I was still able to get what I wanted and the cashiers were asking us to call our friends and family and tell them to come down to Walmart to shop as they were bored. I did do more onine shopping this year and our spending for this Christmas will be on par on what we spent last year.

Congrats to the winners!

WOW that was depressing ...

I was really looking forward to shopping BF as We are behind on our Christmas shopping however I am having to rethink that. I still plan on going out, just don't think I will out as long as there doesn't seem to be any great deals on things that we have on our list. I will be keeping on eye on the sales during the next couple weeks. I am hoping for some great pre BF sales.

I have had issues with just browsing their site .. getting slowness or there was a problem loading the website error. This happened to me from 2 different computers/laptops from 2 different locations and from my iphone. I noticed the problems last week and it has been ongoing.

I don't see a problem with getting the younger 2 a few extra gifts. You could always label them from their father or in memory of their father. How does your hubby feel about it? If he is in agreement with you then he needs to talk to his kids. Another option is to still get them a few extra gifts but give them those gifts in private.

I thought the Target B2G1F sale was right before BF.

We used to have traditions where the women in the family along with some friends would meet up around 3 in the morning, get coffee and then go stand in line for the 1st store and then just shop & shop. Used to have a lot of laughs and good times. For the past few years it has been DH, one of his cousins and my self. We head out about 9 pm and usually finish up between midnight and 2 am. This year we may be out shopping longer as we are so far behind on our shopping.

Last year I did some shopping online, it was more stressful shopping on line, waiting for the items I wanted to become available. Had one major item ordered only to be cancelled hours later. Thankfully I was still able to get it. No I will be out and about in the stores doing my shopping. This year if I order anything on line it will be minimal and nothing major.
