  1. I'm not sure how much help this will be but every year our Walmart does an angel tree with one of the local resthomes. The things they ask for mostly are calenders, socks, lotions, and books on tape. Maybe someone else has some better ideas.
  2. My mom and I make this every year for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Some of my most cherished memories are making this and fudge with my mom. I'm looking forward to having my kids help both of us this year. Divinity 2 2/3 cups sugar 2/3 cup light corn syrup 1/2 cup water 2 egg whites 1 teaspoon vanilla 2/3 cup coarsely chopped nuts 1. Cook sugar, corn syrup and water (use 1 tablespoon less water on humid days) in 2-quart saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly, until sugar is dissolved. Continue cooking, without stirring, to 260ºF on candy thermometer or until small amount of mixture dropped into very cold water forms a hard ball that holds its shape but is pliable. 2. Beat egg whites in medium bowl with electric mixer on high speed until stiff peaks form. Continue beating while pouring hot syrup in a thin stream into egg whites, beating constantly on medium speed. (For best results, use electric stand mixer, not a portable handheld mixer since beating time is about 10 minutes and mixture is thick.) Add vanilla. Beat until mixture holds its shape and becomes slightly dull. (Mixture may become too stiff for mixer.) Gently stir in nuts. 3. Drop mixture from buttered spoon onto waxed paper. Let stand at room temperature at least 12 hours, turning candies over once, until candies feel firm. Store in airtight container.
  3. My fave Christmas movie of all time is Rudolph, and I now my kids favorite is the Mickey's Once upon a Christmas movie. I love it because it has the old Mickey Scrooge story.
  4. I work at a Walmart, we start getting Christmas stuff in before September. I remember the first year I worked there and saw a christmas tree in back in JULY...I groaned so loud, all my coworkers laughed at me.
  5. I work in the toy dept at the local Walmart, when we put these out the last about five minutes, ten if no one knows they are coming. That's how hot they are.
  6. I have nothing for Christmas yet. I have both my kids and my three nieces and nephews birthday all before Christmas (starting this month!) so I probably won't have much before BF set aside for Christmas. Why oh why did my sister in law and I have to have our kids all at the end of the year.
  7. Yeah we call the toy department Toyland for the holidays and it "opened" October 1st. We add new items all during the holidays. So far I haven't seen any blitz (sorry BF) stuff come in but that will change in the next few weeks. Last year it started coming in the end of October. It is normally just wrapped up and put away, with the exception of the high end items, like the computer (if they do them) and game systems (again if they do them this year), those are kept under lock and key.
  8. You can find these at WM in the Sporting Goods department near the hunting stuff.
  9. My hubby and I do it together every year. I make my brother come over and sleep on the couch with the kids so we can go.
  10. Thank you!! I'd forgotten all about redeeming those points for GC...now I have a $25 one coming to start my savings! lol
  11. If I don't get this new job I'm trying for, I'll be working BF but I don't go in until 6 pm so I have plenty of time to shop then nap before work. I just get the joy of cleaning up the toy department after the bomb goes off.....oh joy.
  12. I'm going to be at Wal-Mart and will probably hit Radio Shack and JCPenney (for the free snowglobe). I'll price match anything from KB and Target that I want at WM so I should be back home 7am. I'm doubting I'll hit any of the other stores as they are all at least an hour away from me.
  13. One of the craziest things I ever saw was last year at WM. They had two employees standing not too far from the front doors with tags for the laptops. Behind them was a clothes rack, when the doors opened they got hit so hard by the crowd that the clothes rack broke and one of them took a pole to the back. He had a huge bruise from that. I did get my laptop but only because a really nice person accidently got two tickets and only needed one, she gave the extra to my mom (who also works there and was telling people where things were in the store as we waited in line).
  14. Nah, my family doesn't think I'm nuts, but then again I work at a Walmart. I'm pretty happy I get to go shopping that day (which is why my mom normally gives me a list of things to pick up for her). This year shopping at my Walmart might be easier as we are going through construction to a supercenter....or at least I hope it is!
  15. I have to say I agree about not assuming. I work for the local Wal Mart. They have always allowed you to put BF things on layaway (they did limit the amounts on some things, like the laptop to one per person). I put my purchases on layaway because, as they all said, it's a great hiding place and because my husband will be going to Denmark and Germany (work) for two weeks. He needed the extra cash now. I will be picking up our layaway later this week.
  16. I work in retail and the way I can shop on BF is I have my availabilty limited. I'm only available from 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm, so I can shop all day long before going to work. It works great for me. I know many people who request to work the morning of BF.
