  1. Ah, I see now. I don't pay too much attention to that part anyway and hover over the little down arrow icon to the right of the price and see what the discount (over Amazon's regular price - which is rarely MSRP) is for myself. I don't think Amazon is alone in this though. I've seen BB, WM and others do similar things when they put stuff on sale. The % or $ amount off in advertising is often off the MSRP. For example, Office Depot is advertising a Nikon camera at $89.99 as being $30 off. That's off MSRP ... Amazon's regular price is actually a 99 cents cheaper than Office Depot's sale price. Out of 16 sellers for this camera tracked at nextag, only 2 (Sears and Bestbuy) are at $119.99 - all of the others are at or better than the "sale" price. The price history hasn't shown the average price for this to be above $100 since June. I watch the laptop sales as I'm always in the market. I know for a fact others advertised huge discounts when the sale price wasn't much better than their normal price. As with anything, knowledge is power. In this case, it's knowledge of the product and its pricing.
  2. You sure? Because when I look at the price details it shows 3 prices: List Price, Price & Deal Price. For example the Otterbox on Lightning right now: List Price: $49.95-$49.99 Price: $19.99-$21.98 Deal Price: $16.99 I read that as MSRP is 49.95 to 49.99, Amazon's regular price is 19.99 - 21.98, and the lightning price is $16.99 I added one to my cart (WON'T use an iPhone so I don't want it but wanted to check out what it would do), and the price for the color I picked is $21.98 and it gave me a $4.99 discount making it $16.99... If they bump it back to MSRP, I would have expected $49.99 - 33.00 discount.
  3. Got an email for a HP laptop I tried to pick up the second it went live on Friday but had issues with it at the "checking..." step (said it could be added but wouldn't add it to the cart repeatedly). The email acknowledged the problem and they attached a 1 use discount to my account to let me check out at the Lightning Deal price. This is my 3rd or 4th customer service experience with Amazon, and they have ALWAYS gone above and beyond to make things right. In the past they overnighted a lost shipment, and then said to keep the 1st shipment when it eventually did show up. When they offered Amazon Student and I already I had Amazon Prime, they refunded my Prime fee. They have price matched an item, etc. So far I've picked up: HP dv6 laptop for $399 Unknown DVD $1.99 U2 Unforgettable Fie Super Deluxe Boxed Set (2CD + DVD) $24.99 Deathly Hallows Part 2 $9.99 All shipped 2 day air free with Amazon Student
  4. I think before dropping $3k, I'd get a 2nd opinion. The economy's bad - you don't know if that tech might need the work and suggesting another unit to help his personal economics out... Check around some other companies may have a 'tune up special' going on - check the weekend paper.
  5. Maxtor is owned by Seagate who's been around even longer (by a couple years - late 70's vs. early 80's). That doesn't mean that particular drive is good... recently for example Seagate 7200.11 line has had some real problems with firmware. From http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/374/1050374/seagate-barracudas-7200-11-failing My point is that checking the reputation of the individual drive itself is good advice from Kren
  6. Uh... the walmart stores buy in bulk. They are known for it thus 1)the massive distribution network and 2) WM dictating terms such as package labeling to suppliers.
  7. I was interested... looks like some decent deals (shipping not withstanding)... but I don't know this e-tailer, and reseller ratings are very few and NOT very good. http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Boscov_s#reviews Lifetime Rating: 4.38 / 10 Six-Month Rating: 3.75 / 10 Think I'll pass, though I would of liked the rack.
  8. I have found Amazon's customer service to be excellent. Once when the item was missing a part they shipped another via overnight. Another time when the item got lost in shipping, they did the same. When the original showed up I called to see if they wanted to send a return tag (~$50 item) and they said to keep it. Actually both time, I was to keep the original item.
  9. Let us know... it would be nice to confirm what the manager said about them closing out the kodak to switch to Fuji
  10. Had to pick up a cheap digital camera as I needed to send some photos back to VA, and my EOS D30 is up there. Rite-Aid is switching to Fuji according to the manager, and the C613 was $129 discounted to $49.95... while the $129 is a ridiculous price, $50 is a great deal... $25 cheaper than newegg! Other non-Fuji models may also be discounted if he was right about the switch to Fuji.
  11. Oh and in case you want to go a little early and get some type of deal... You need to get the club thing... http://app.campaignerpro.com/accountsmedia/3927/BUY-1-GET-1-Coupon.gif
  12. Just came in email... VH - 30-70% off + add 10% from mid to 11am Bass - 40% off - 50% off from midnight to 11am G. Beene - 40 - 70% off - add 20% off ($60+) mid to 11am Izod - 40% off - 50% from mid to 11am http://app.campaignerpro.com/accountsmedia/3927/Midnight-Madness.gif Participating locations: http://app.campaignerpro.com/accountsmedia/3927/Locations.gif Forgive me if this was already posted...
  13. If you can wait a couple of days or don't have an officemax nearby - Buy.com has it for $112.52 (and could be $10 off for new google checkout users) http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=203092435&adid=17070&dcaid=17070
  14. The Penske truck we used (brand new) had a speed limiter on it that damn near made it dangerous to drive. I'll never rent another. To the OP: try to play with the pickup and dropoff dates if you can. Also check other uhaul locations. I found that if I drove 30 minutes to pick up the truck it dropped the price by $500! IT all depends on where the trucks are sitting. If they have extra they cut the price.
  15. There are several "Proheat" models. We bought the 9400 model http://www.amazon.com/Bissell-ProHeat-Select-Upright-Cleaner/dp/B000ASDCWK/ for $199 a month ago when Amazon had free "standard" shipping on it. Standard is a step up from the super saver supposedly but I don't find it makes much of a difference. As for the 9400 ... we love it. It definitely works better than the Rug Dr you can rent. It heats the water itself. Ones we had before didn't and won't worth it.
  16. Wachovia = "one of the 10 worst in America" (like #3 or 4 IIRC) I currently have a complaint in with the BBB and Dept of Treasury, Office of the Comptroller of Currency (http://www.occ.treas.gov/) regardling thier disregard for the Expedited Funds Availability Act. They tried to claim a bank check is subject to a hold and "bank policy" somehow overrides federal law. Since Wachovia is a "national bank" that is the oversight agency... BTW, I have a neighbor who works for them, and she won't bank with them.
  17. I have Vonage ... and we have used 911 on 2 occassions with no problem. I'd have no problem recommending it to others and have on many occassions.
  18. Check out the paypal/ebay security key http://www.paypal.com/securitykey... It would stop some of the "someone hacked my ebay/paypal account" stories... Got mine in today...
  19. Walmart is ever so slightly cheaper... Preorder for 17.27 + .97 shipping = 18.24
  20. And I saw the next movie is coming out like a week before that... The poster was up at the theatre already! Edit - Order of the Pheonix release date is July 13, 2007
  21. Seems to be the going rate... B&N and borders are the same.
  22. Well after reading everything I could find on network (wired or wireless - wired prefered for me with a wireless handset), I bit the bullet on the Linksys CIT400. -- Read the reviews on buy.com and amazon if you're looking for a skype phone... hope they're right. Amazon had gone up to 151.99, same at buy.com. But I had a 7% off "welcome back" coupon emailed to me that I used and got it for $141.35 shipped. Also bought a CIT200 for the laptop for $63.21 (67.97 - 7%) And a mp3 transmitter for the car I'm posting separately... Oh well, there went a nice chunk of todays $.
  23. I just checked on one from CompUSA that was electronically filed. It went pending for 3 weeks for the return period. But now says "yes" as a status (isn't listed in the list of statuses and explanations) and has a note that it's been "requested" and may take 10 to 12 weeks to be mailed. I was like WTF? Bought 1/3, filed 1/3, approved 1/25 but the check should be mailed by 4/19? I thought the new electronic filing was supposed to make things better. For whom? Them?
  24. If you have a business account, just request the real card... You can use it even if you don't have the total funds available within a preset limit with backup funding. And yes you do still get the rebate on those transactions, provided you used credit and not debit. The one place the backup funding doesn't like that I've found is gas pumps -- found that out one morning when I tried to use it in a just woke up haze and had drained that sucker a couple days prior. I emailed since I knew it should have just pulled from the backup source. But since it was a gas pump and they don't get the real amount until it processes it doesn't like it. I wondered about restaurants as well since the tip isn't on there. But I'm not trying that. It's one thing to have a gas pump look at you like a deadbeat whos card won't go through, but a waiter/waitress. I'll pass.
