Canadians on BF - 2007

Started up a thread last year. Just interested to see how many Canadians head down to the states for BF. I've done it for a few years now and was able to come away with some great deals. Now with the dollar at par. Or who know... maybe more by November, some of the deals will be just crazy for us Canucks heading south.

I'll be heading to either Buffalo, NY area or Glens Falls, NY area. Haven't quite decided yet.

Where will you be going and what are you looking forward to?

We just got back from Winnipeg this weekend, and it was the first time I can remember that I lost money exchanging US Dollars for Canadian Dollars.

To put it in perspective, our waitress on Saturday night said that it's not uncommon at all for Canadians not just to come into the Fargo / Grand Forks area for major shopping (about 150 and 250 miles respectively) but she said it's pretty common to drive down to Minneapolis/St. Paul for shopping, which is another 250 after Fargo. Course, when you have 13% cumulative taxes on clothing/gifts/etc in Canada, the drive is probably worth it.

I would think that Canadians would be heading down in droves since the US dollar is so weak right now. Electronics and media (DVDs and CDs) are so much more expensive in Canada too.

I was watching the news and they were talking to the tourism director for the Buffalo region and he was saying that currently the niagara/buffalo airport and the Walden Galleria are reporting that 30-40% of their customers in the past couple weeks are Canadian. Those #'s are staggering. I can imagine they'll only go up the closer we get to the holiday season. Especially on weekends.

Looking forward to attending Black Friday, have done so for the past few years, even when the dollar was high. Long time US/Cross Border shopper.

Love this web site, was able to really plan the trip out last year, Looking forward to all the tips again this year.

Thinking about staying over the night before Thanksgiving Day November 22/07, as I believe the border will be a nightmare.

Already the line ups are increasing at the border and it is even Christmas yet.

We usually head over fairly late on Thursday to avoid border waits. Usually by about 9:30-10 there isn't usually a very long wait. Done this at border crossings in Quebec and southern Ontario.

ANd you're right about this site. Made it really a lot easier for us to pick which area we wanted to go and stay in and which stores to hit.

whats the 400 dollar 48 hour exemption?

also possibly a dumb question, but do you have to declare all the stuff, does it take a while just wondering because ive been to canada but never really brought anything back, other than a article of clothing or souvenier.

Canadians are able to bring back duty free:

$50 after a period of 24 hours

$400 after a period of 48 hours

$750 after a period of 7 days

After those amounts we have to pay duty and/or taxes on some but not all items. Groceries for example are almost always duty/tax free.

Living in the suburbian Detroit area, we're neighbors with Canada. The paper just ran an article that the border towns with stores are seeing a huge surge in Canadian buyers.

Port Hurons furniture store said they are setting up delivery to the Sarnia area and the Best Buy is getting flooded with Canadians. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to run into a Canuk on BF around here.

The more the merrier. I'm just bummed my dollar doesn't go as far in Canada as it used to. It once was a cheap, close vacation. But not anymore! :(

I live on the West Coast and have been doing Black Friday for over a decade. The dollar is definitely going to help but we (my friends and family) did it even when the dollar was 62 cents because the selection, prices, and availability are better.

I'm planning a trip down to Spokane, WA. I can't wait. I went to get winter tires Thanksgiving weekend and saved over $300. It's gonna be great. Now I'm just looking for a deal of a good place to stay and I'll be all set. I'm thinking a hotel close to where I wanna hit first thing is what I need.

We're headed to our 2nd BF event.

It's now a ritual for my wife and I. Well....more for her of course.

But like others have said...with the CDN $ about parity...i'm thinking i may be spending more.

We're going to do the drive down to Philly and hit that area and visit some friends.

We've got our hotel rooms booked and will be leaving T.O @ 8pm Thursday!

THank goodness for Pricline! :)

Even better as of today we're getting almost a 6% discount on every purchase. $1.0571USD = $1CAD. Looking like the best black friday ever, at least for us.

Sure- come on down to Buffalo, just don't want what I'm waiting for! :D

We are really expecting a lot of them this year. I live right on the border and they are over here shopping all the time. Granted, it can be annoying when you try to shop at certain places on the weekends, but heck, you're only helping our economy so THANKS!!!! :)

We are planning on heading down. We went down a few years ago and my mom still goes on about the sales she got at JC Penny on baby clothes. Now with the dollar so high, I can't wait to head down! Although if there is not much on sale that I want we may head down during the week. But I loved black friday when we went and already have the day booked off work to go lol

I live right on the border and I will be there with bells on. Especially with the $$ the way it is, I am so excited to get some crazy deals. I have my lists all set (and continually adding to them).

especially on books and electronics where the prices are so OBVIOUSLY different. Plus on shoes. Actually on everything. I can't wait, my countdown is on!

Well if you guys celebrated Thanksgiving like all good Americans do, then you would have a Black Friday of your very own. Have any of you ever investigated to see if maybe the Pilgrams also discovered Newfoundland or New Brunswick or Saskatchewan? I'll bet they did! Heck there wasn't much else to do when they landed. So maybe you all should go and march on Ottawa and DEMAND that your socialist stooge government get off their toques (Quebecois for "davenport") and start celebrating like the rest of the civilized world. Then you too could mop up on bargains galore and laugh at the Belgians and the rest of Europe who sit bitterly in their sidewalk cafes trying to act aloof while being EMOTIONALLY DEVASTATED that they are going home to bags of coal in their xmas stockings instead of 500" plasma TV's!

:cheesy:

here in canada we have Thanksgiving in October, and instead of black friday we have sales on the day after Christmas (Boxing day). But unfortunately it's nothing compared to the sales you guys had in previous BFs.

Heading down for my 2nd BF. Last year we drove up to Grand Forks from Winnipeg in the morning. We weren't going for any doorbusters but we had a BLAST. This year we are driving up on the 22nd and staying overnight. There's 11 of us this time...LOL

We're more informed this year and we will be buying the paper as soon as we can get our hands on them in North Dakota.

BF is an annual event for me. We drive from Nova Scotia to Portland, Maine on Thursday night just in time to arrive at the hotel and then over to the mall for 1am shopping. We don't stop until the following afernoon/evening, sleep, drive to Bangor and shop the next day (Saturday) all day and the drive home Saturday night. Its totally exhausting and worth every minute of it.

Even when the exchange was 1.60 we went, so this year its fantastic (finally) although I fear the deals may not be as good....maybe its all just in my head.

Its not such a big deal to claim more than what you're allowed, they don't charge much on what you bring back, although I never knew about all the exemptions until they were talking about it on the radio. I must look those up.
