brynnfromtheblock Posted October 18, 2006 Posted October 18, 2006 What are you giving to your kids teachers this year? I have 3 kids and between them they have 7 teachers..... doesn't leave alot of room for me to spend much...I think I'm doing candles and lotion (not very exciting but doable) what do you get and how much do you spend?
fmdjgirl Posted October 18, 2006 Posted October 18, 2006 I saw some ideas for making gifts for teachers. If you are interested, I will try and find them again. The candles are a good idea. You can get those cheap at various discount stores and dress them up pretty cheaply, too.
holly2hottie Posted October 18, 2006 Posted October 18, 2006 I am going to give a candle with a candle warmer wrapped up cute along with a $25 gift certificate to Lakeshore Learning store so she can get stuff for the classroom.
caramel Posted October 20, 2006 Posted October 20, 2006 I don't have kids but when I was younger I used to give my teachers nice vases from Ross with a slice of cheesecake from Sam's :) Don't ask...
goodem01 Posted October 20, 2006 Posted October 20, 2006 Right now we only have two daycare providers to buy for, we give them $20 worth of gift cards. Last year we did Loews theater and Cheesecake factory.
pogiporkchop Posted October 20, 2006 Posted October 20, 2006 This will be my first year for doing this, so it hasn't been decided yet but there are so many ideas to choose from! My son and I had better have a plan in place before Thanksgiving!
bugsette Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 I buy all year long because I think I will have 9-10 teachers to buy for
tokanm Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 It all depends on the teacher, some are more special than others:angel1: Most teachers I know prefer gifts for the classroom or gifts that the child themselves have made.
Firemansgal311 Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 Previously I've only bought a "big" gift ($20 or less)for the home room teacher. Then get the other period teachers small gifts like lapel pins, a small goodie bag with personal care items, or a gc with a small $ amt like a $5 to Starbucks($5 or less). I plan on doing the same this year as well. there is no way I could afford to pay for 13 teachers presents. (2 kids, 7 & 6 teachers each)
readerof3 Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 I will be giving my kid's teachers 10 dollar gift certs. to the local teacher store and maybe a book or two for their classrooms.Last year the teachers asked for stuff for the classrooms instead of stuff for themselves.
Chunka Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 How about a general donation in honor of "Mr...Ms....." I have many teachers in the family and because they receive so much they "regift" the majority. This way if you give it to the school or to a local charity that would be appropriate maybe they'd find that more thoughtful and it would cost you less than even individual candles. For my DD's one teacher either a CD with photos from the year so far of school events, a donation to something she is a part of, or a cert. for a manicure
Y_Odgers Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 Just my two cents...I live with 2 teachers and am myself a teaching assistant. The absolute best gift a teacher can receive is gift certificates to anywhere. We eat, shop, and watch movies just like the rest of you. But most of all we spend our money on the children when the state wont pay for it. I'm NOT complaining about spending personal money because this is something I like to do when I can. Sometimes that $40 dollars on craft stuff is nothing when I can see the kids excited about making something for mom or dad. Just think of it this way, exactly how many coffee mugs do you think we get a year at Christmas or Teachers Appreciation day and multiply by how many student in all our classes by how many years we've been teaching. It comes up to A LOT:eek: ! Please don't get me wrong I appreciated any momento a child and his/her family gives to me because afterall its the thought that counts. The gift certificates are just a thought though and you may even spend less. :)
Gator Pam Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 I look for clearance items at Target throughout the year, and if I see something that strikes me as perfect for a certain teacher, I get it and put it away in 'the gift closet.' The most I've ever wanted to spend was $12.94 on Eddie Bauer picnic basket sets that retailed for $49.99.
bugsette Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 probably it comes out to about $6.00 - 8.00 a teacher
Turtle Mommy Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 It depends on the teacher. This year Ds#1 finally got a full time teacher so I will have to wait and see. His discovery teacher(special therapy teacher) I normally do $20-$25. Ds#2's teacher I will most likely do $20-$25 too.
threelittlecupcakes Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 I do the gift cards for Christmas and last year got the personal photo gift cards at Walmart with my ds picure on the giftcard. I don't buy for the teachers once they are out of elementary school, don't know why, just never really thought about it - am I bad?
jlcr Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 I have two boys one with seven teachers and other with three. The closet ones maybe a giftcard up to ten dollars or to a coffee shop. Another idea is to buy a coffee mug (x-mas) from everything is a dollar and put a cone shaped styrofoam and buy peppermints and pin them as you would ornaments on a x-mas tree using a star shaped sucker at the top. Make bows with ribbons. Use your imagination! It's a x-mas tree! Hope you enjoy
motoXmom Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 What are you giving to your kids teachers this year? I have 3 kids and between them they have 7 teachers..... doesn't leave alot of room for me to spend much...I think I'm doing candles and lotion (not very exciting but doable) what do you get and how much do you spend? After seen the blanket with the ties around the edges I think this may be what I'm doing, in the school colors.
berry1014 Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 our daughter is in kindergarten so she only has one teacher. We plan on getting a travel coffee mug and a gift certificate so she can refill her coffee mug anytime she needs too.
BFQueenofNY Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 I have 1 teacher and 2 specialists to buy for. I am getting my son's preschool teacher a gift card to the local teacher store and a gc for a dinner at Biaggi's since she does so much to help my son. The Ot's are getting food gifts with something made by my son. I am making caramel toffee popcorn. If you let this, it can and will bankrupt you LOL
Gporter34 Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 We have five kids in school and the total number of teachers is around 35-40. No way will I be buying gift cards for that many teachers and hopefully their teachers will appreciate whatever I can afford for them and realize that while it would be nice to get a $20 or $25 gc from the kids, that may not be possible for everyone.
Gray04 Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 I am a Braille Embosser/Ed. Tech and have received many gifts, given many gifts and come back to... it is really the entire staff that have some contact with your/our children. So, how about a pointsettia for the office/teachers/copy room for all of us to enjoy? Donuts and coffee from the local donut shop on a Friday morning. A thank you card stating what the children are thankful for. A book donated to the library with thanks to all of them. People who are forgotton about, the bus drivers, library workers, duty monitors (lunch and recess), speech therapists, ot, pt, gym teacher, music teacher, art teacher... sorry Just my long $0.02 worth :)
dorkydiva Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 When DD was in Kindergarten, I got her teacher a stocking and stuffed it with bags of microwave popcorn and a gc to Blockbuster. We've since moved to a very rural area, and there aren't many shopping choices for a gc. Last year, her teacher asked the parents to go in together to buy some nice (expensive) puzzles for the classroom. This year, DS has started Kindergarten, so I will have two teachers to buy for.
bugsette Posted October 26, 2006 Posted October 26, 2006 I do get the school guards and the admisnistrativ asst. and the school nurse a gift too.
troysbride Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 This is my 25th year to teach, and I was raised by 2 teachers. The best idea some of my parents have organized is to secretly collect a few dollars from each child, and give a "class gift"--If there are 20 kids who give 5 dollars, a nice gift card to a local mall is quite a nice gift, and really appreciated!
sns128 Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 I only have one teacher to buy for so I'm putting together a teacher can gift. It's an unused paint can filled with classrom supplies, crayons, pencils, glue etc. I am making a label on my computer to put on the can and a poem is attached to it. I've always given something they can use in the class and last year I gave his teacher a hot chocolate cone I made.
dpape Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 My Kindy has 5 teachers (Classroom, Music (2X /wk), Spanish (2X / wk), PE (1X/wk), and Lunch/Recess(everyday)) The 4 female teachers are getting shower gel and lotion (~10 each). The male PE teacher is getting a gift mug set(~5). His main classroom teacher is also getting a gift card to half-priced books (~35). (This is her first year as a classroom teacher and she mentioned that she wants to expand her library and the gift cards don't ever expire)
scrabbler Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 I stopped giving the "teacher" gift when I heard from teachers that so many of them got just too much stuff! I was at a garage sale of a teacher once and I had never seen so many cups etc. If I can give a gift, I give to the class something they need, or a gift for them like a gc.
comm402 Posted October 28, 2006 Posted October 28, 2006 I usually give a food gift of some kind, fudge or a small cheesecake.
ms_mckenna Posted October 28, 2006 Posted October 28, 2006 People who are forgotton about, the bus drivers, library workers, duty monitors (lunch and recess), speech therapists, ot, pt, gym teacher, music teacher, art teacher...sorry Just my long $0.02 worth :)That is why I have 25 or so to buy for every year. If we are going to buy we buy for everyone that comes into contact with my kids. Course they go to a very small school but we buy for the custodians, all my sons therapists, lunch ladies, the lady in the office .... well you get the point.
