crix101 Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 My daughter (7) is in cheerleading and is practicing her jumps. Her coach suggested that she get a trampoline and she has been hounding me ever since. She wants to ask Santa for it but I am worried. I know so many kids that have broken their arms and such. I know they come with the nets now, but do what are your experiences with them? Also, do you think they will be around for sale on BF?
copados1993 Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 As much fun as they are, they are VERY dangerous. I grew up doing gymnastics my whole life up through high school and we used these. As fun as they were for training, I saw many other kids get hurt. It is very easy to land the wrong way. My dear kids have asked for one and believe me, I know how much fun it would be, but I would never buy one. That's just me though.
tdanette Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 My kids have one, I've never had a probelm with one getting hurt but we have to be careful because they tend to get braver the more they use it. The one thing we forbid is flips. I think with supervision, they're safe. WM did have them during BF a couple years ago, not sure about last year but I think they'll be on sale for Christmas for sure.
hpowers Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 My kids have practically grown up on one. It's the kids that come over and have never been on one that is the problem. People get hurt everyday riding a bike. Just use caution and don't allow them to get rough on it.
Bestbuy7 Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 What size are you looking for?? The ones that go in the yard?
elena_398 Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 I will not own one. too dangerous. My neighbors across the street has one for 2 years. They have 3 children. Last year, the daughter broke her arm, this year the oldest son. Needless to say they got rid of it. My daughter bumped her head pretty good. Only 3 little ones on it, but they find a way to hurt themselves. Everyone had a net too. Still doesn't help. You could get the little exercise trampolines. Have bounce to them and she could still practice her jumps.
sevirj Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 We bought one for our daughter a couple years ago. We make sure that (most of the time) only 1 person is jumping at a time. It's funny, my wife was so peculiar about it that she makes parents write down that they will not sue us if their kid gets hurt.
mynpyn Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 My husband and I have different opinions on this one...I say too dangerous, he says they are fine. We don't have one and are debating whether we are going to get one for Christmas for the boys. I told him I will not have it without the net. I know several people who have them and there have been no broken bones yet....
peachysquirt21 Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 It's funny, my wife was so peculiar about it that she makes parents write down that they will not sue us if their kid gets hurt. That's a good idea. Nowadays lots of people get sue happy over everything.
tokanm Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 I work in Pediatrics...trust me LOTS of injuries...broken arms, broken legs and concussions and lacerations are not uncommon at all. Even with the ones with the netting, the problem is when the kids bang into each other while jumping/falling. I would suggest just a small one that is about 6" off the floor:gd_soapbo
Firemansgal311 Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 I don't have a problem with them. We have one with the safety netting but it is currently in storage because our lease says it is against the owners insurance. As soon as we get moved we will have it back out for our kids to play on.
pinkroses4mommy Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 We have had one for about 4 years and my kids (ages 5, 10, & 13) have loved it!! However, my best friend's daughter broke her arm on it the first week we had it. But hey, when I was 8, I tripped over a fan and broke my arm, so I wouldn't let that stop me from buying one.
crix101 Posted October 13, 2006 Author Posted October 13, 2006 Thank you so much for the posts! I love it when I get so many responses. All of which are great. I had one when I was a kid, with no net, and was fine. However, I know alot of people who have been injured. I have two kids, so keeping one on it at a time will be difficult. Im not sure that I wont just get the small one that she can practice on and not the big backyard type. I know its not what she is hoping for but oh well. Im sure she's not wanting broken bones either! Also since the big ones are three hundred dollars, getting a small one will leave me more money for BLACK FRIDAY!!!!!!!
able Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 i actually bought one for someone on bf before. a big one for like 80$ the net was also 80$ that was a while ago..
dessenma Posted October 13, 2006 Posted October 13, 2006 It would cause our homeowners insurance to go up if we had one.
Gurnee Al Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 Have jeninpa bring her goats over first to test one out. Link.
kdspark Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 We got one last year at WM for $178 on BF. I actually got it a few days later, since they still had some and I wasnt able to go there on BF. I have a 4 and 8 yr old and it is a 12Ft with enclosure. I also grew up on one with no net and that was my main concern, but we also dont normally have kids over so it is just my 2 when they are on it. which isnt much anymore. D
kalle1212 Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 While they may be dangerous, they are great for the kids to occupy themselves on and are good excercise. I went on it with them once and my legs were totally worked out. And I agree with whoever spoke about bikes and injuries. Nobody thinks twice about bikes.
jellybean051901 Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 My neighbors had one when I was growing up. We played on it a lot and no one ever got hurt. She set rules about it though like only two people on at a time and no flips and stuff. Getting the net around it might not be a bad idea either. I take that back, one person fell off of it but it was an adult who was horsing around. You can get hurt on anything. I thikn if you are responsible trampolines aren't a bad idea
hoopysgirl Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 We have one for our daughter but its a smaller 8' one. We don't have a net for it either. The nice thing about it being smaller is it is for only one person at a time, much easier to keep all the kids off of it that way. Our neighbors have a big one and they have a harder time getting everyone to follow the rules with it. We got ours at Wal-Mart for $40 on clearance.
BFQueenofNY Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 They are very dangerous. If you do decide to do it make sure you get the protective fencing.
Novac Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 IMO, trampolines have their ups and downs (Sorry, couldn't resist)

cactusmom Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 I would love to have one for my kids. I got a letter from my homeowners insurance last year with updates to my policy. Dogs no longer covered and trampolines no longer covered. I didnt run out and get rid of my dogs. I still want a trampoline but no neighbor kids or friends would be allowed to touch it. People my say they wouldnt sue but they would.

Maybe you could find one of the smaller ones there. Just a thought! Then you'd have even more $$$ on BF
laffnatu Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 We bought one 2 BFs ago. I don't remember how much it was but it seems like it was cheaper than they had them last year. The net was separately priced but we bought it too. The kids have loved it. I do keep my gate to the backyard locked when the kids aren't outside. So far <knock on wood> it has gone well.
mom2maddynsky Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 my dh's brother brought one for his kids a few years ago (at the BF sale) and gave it to his kids for christmas. within a month his daughter had broke her arm and mine had broke her leg. so my dh refuses to let me buy one. i am kinda like the others they say it could happen with anything but dh says no.
Trish1298 Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 We have one, but I have a net on it, and would not get one unless it had a net. It has saved many kids many times. I am still always nervous when they are on it.
Tracy72 Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 we have had one for a few yrs and my girls 4 and 10 love it....it was scary to me when we first got it for them but now I am use it them on it....the oldest dd just cant jump hard with her sister on it with her.
