ladywaterwind Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Is anyone else going to be condemned to this besides me? It won't really be a problem if there isn't going to be anything on sale that I really want/need, but man it's going to sting a bit to not be able to shop it. I have been looking for a new job though, so maybe I'll get lucky, stop being lazy and actually looknig harder, and find a job where I'll have that day/morning off. I had to work last year, at Wal-Mart, but I worked third shift and was off at 7, so I missed the first hour but was still able to get the things I really wanted, which was mostly clothes and the 10$ vacuum they had (which wasn't that good of a deal as it turns out cause I recently replaced it with a dirt devil and didn't realise how much the 10$ eureka wasn't picking up, let us jsut say eww gross floor)
StephanieD Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I have to work on Black Friday as well, but that won't stop me from going. I don't have to be into work until noon. So, that gives me enough time to hit the stores I'll need. It also helps that all stores I'll probably end up going to are less than 10 minutes from work.
clearanceshopper43 Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 yep, I will work on BF. I did for the very first time last year and had major withdrawal symptoms. Oh well, if I see something , I must have , I will send out my husband and son to shop.
santaclaus Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I'll go into work on Thanksgivng night. I'll just get my boss to let me come in earlier than my usual 10P start time. I have had to work day shift on Black Friday. It sucked. I conned my hubby into going after the TVs that I wanted. He said never again, lol.
smangham Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I worked BF 2 years ago....at Dillard's.....It was crazy! I will try real hard not to have to ever do that again!
cactusmom Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 The joy of being self employed I just ask the boss for the day off (oops that is me)
Aaron Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I have to work here on Black Friday, Of course, that doesn't stop me from going out for a bit.
RossMAN Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I worked BF 2 years ago....at Dillard's.....It was crazy! I will try real hard not to have to ever do that again!I can't imagine what it must be like working in retail on BF. It must be sheer madness and chaos.
ladywaterwind Posted September 25, 2006 Author Posted September 25, 2006 I work at WalMart. Last year I worked thrid shift, so I was there for the first hour. Well, electronics was nutzoid after the laptops that were cheap, but that was expected. My area wasn't bad, I was guarding the pallet of clothes, oh boy! big huge line there but later on I had heard that one girl in the toys section had been guarding the pallet of cabbage patch kids that were on sale and when she unwrapped them some woman elbowed her in the eye to get at them. Crazy people.
Bunniq Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 No not working on BF. In the past when I worked outside of the home I would work 3pm-12am on Thanksgiving so that I could be off the next day. My mother opens a stand at flea markets a few times a year and she is trying to get me to help her that Saturday after Thanksgiving. I keep telling her she might not have many customers due to BF.
mrn8 Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I have in the past, and it didn't really bother me. My wife, on the other hand, has worked retail on those days and it's a nightmare. You think shoppers have stories, you should talk to those that work in those stores.
shanni Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I worked layaway one year at walmart on BF, and I LOVED it! All the people, the christmas feeling in the air, it was exhausting but fun.
stationchief Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Gotta work on BF, but not 'till 5pm. Will have plenty of time to get a nap in after all that shoppin'. Just need to ask for the thursday before off so I can wait in those wonderful lines.
jadedmomof2 Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Nope, gonna take it off like I did last year. I'll probably work the morning shift on Thanksgiving though(no Black Friday sales at a convenience store!)
alimfp Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 It should be one of DH's paid holidays. If they mandatory it (which they can), then .. that's how it goes! Since he works later in the day, I won't miss out. I hope he can go though!
NeepNeep Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I can't imagine what it must be like working in retail on BF. It must be sheer madness and chaos.I was a toy department manager at Woolworth's for 2 years back in the late 70's. Even 30 years ago BF was madness, but working BF then probably can't compare to how it is today...
Jenh1973 Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I use to get stuck working BF every year & always missing the good bargains. But now I'm working in an office (all women who love to shop) & we voted to exchange Martin Luther King Day for BF off... yippy!!!
2minnies Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I love being self employed for stuff like this!! :) None of my clients work that day anyway.....
cherry33778 Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I have to work too, but I feel a case of the flu coming on . What about you guys?
kmbrly Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I had to work last year on BF, but I still sat outside Circuit city all night. Then had to be to work at 9am. Slept pretty good Friday night though. Oh, and I've already taken a vacation day for BF this year
reportermomof3 Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I usually have to work, but not until the 3 p.m. shift, so I'm out there bright and early at our Super Wal-Mart. Here in this small market, 2-3 a.m. is usually sufficient to get in line. They are still in the process of taking the doorbuster pallets out and deciding where they will go at this time. When I'm done, I can usually get a small nap in before I have to get to work.
mitchandalisha Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 It's a paid holiday for me and if I got a new job that it wasn't a paid holiday, then I would negotiate getting that day off before taking the job!
shopping mom Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 I asked for that day off when I took my new job, my manager loves to shop BF so she said no problem.
sevirj Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 I used to love working BF at Wally World. Just stand back and watch the crazy people fighting over all the deals! Of course now that I no longer work there, I am one of the crazy people fighting!
Rebirth Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 I never worked on a Holiday or after the holidays from Thanksgiving to New Years Day.
KayTee Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 I am so happy to be working with a new company that gives us BF off as a paid holiday. It better than working at my old job...AAA open 365 days a year 24 hours a day!
Dizzy Devil Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 Nope - it's one of our paid holidaysUs too - my hubby and I both work for county government, and the county traded Columbus Day for the day after Thanksgiving. Great idea!
Turtle Mommy Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 I work for DH and last year we all had off. If he decides to have his guys work this year that is okay but I am off and he is off because he has kids to baby-sit!!
linda050103 Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 I can't imagine what it must be like working in retail on BF. It must be sheer madness and chaos. OMG I loved it!! I worked retail for 5 years. Matter of fact, my first day ever working retail was BF. It's a blast! You get to help others spend their money
