  2. Nice idea, however I'll be done Christmas shopping on Black Friday.
  3. For what its worth dusty, I totally agree with you. BF used to be fun to get in line 5-6 hours before the store opened at 5-6am. Now people start lining up a week or two in advance and there is no way the average person can compete with that and it's a shame. I said before in another thread that I wish these stores wouldnt even let someone on the property after hours until the day before BF at a minimum. I could certainly use some of those doorbusters as well but the campers have just made that impossible. Now, I just go and enjoy the day later in the morning and get what deals I can. If there is something in particular I'm stoking out, I'll just keep an eye on sales and try to get the best deals I can any other day. I'm sorry for your loss as well.
  4. How early is too early is subjective. Personally, I think its getting a bit ridiculous, and actually has for many years now and I really wish stores would put a stop to it. For people to start camping out a week or two in advance is just silly to save a few bucks. I can understand wanting or needing to get good deals to afford Christmas, however it could also be looked at as one doesn't need to be buying extravagant thinks like big electronics that they would save hundreds of dollars on if they cant afford it. There is no rule that says that Christmas has to be only filled with expensive or big extravagant items and I'm sure these people would have just a nice of a Christmas with a $20 item then they would with a $200 tv. It used to be that BF was fun to get to the store and wait 5-6 hours in line and try to get some good items for good deals. Now, there is no way for the normal average person who works and has a family to take care of to get any of these items since people do start camping out weeks in advance. I don't even bother anymore with doorbusters due to it. If I cant afford a normal or regular sale price, I dont need it. However, with that being said, for those that do have nothing else better to do or not care, or consider it an adventure or just a vacation, to each his own and they deserve the doorbusters and/or free items that they do get.
  5. I thought it would be fun if we shared what our Thanksgiving day schedule is like. I know many people cook, many people just wait to go to relatives, many shop, many wait in line, etc. So what's your Thanksgiving day schedule like? Here's mine: Wake up by 7am at the latest and go to CVS for a newspaper and the Thanksgiving day sale with all the freebies! Come back home, make coffee and breakfast Watch the Thanksgiving day parade while looking at the paper Go to dinner at parents house about 1pm and will stay until about 5-6ish. Come home, give the dogs their Thanksgiving meal and then make the concrete plan for the morning This year I may have to do it a bit different since I wont be able to see my boyfriend until the evening, I might try to make my concrete BF plan in the morning while watching the parade and then go and visit him after dinner. Head to bed by 10-11pm to be able to get up early BF morning and SHOP!
  6. Sunny and a high of 79 I love Florida!
  7. Oh ok, thanks. I dont need the teeny ones so instead of paying full price to get a small friend, I'll just keep an eye out for a better price on the full size thing. I'm watching prices at Amazon, just wanted to check first in case I was missing something. Thanks! :)
  8. I cant seem to find this notification and I'm in need of 3 pillow pets as well. If this is true, I'd like to put them in my cart so I'm ready for Thanksgiving day checkout. Can you link us to where you found it? Thanks!
  9. Finally got to Sams today myself. I guess we got pretty lucky because we didn't really encounter any problems with other shoppers. There were of course the lollygagglers who want to stand around and talk to the people giving out food or block aisles, but the store was not very busy so there was plenty of room to move around. We had: Ham and potatoes Asparagus, brussel sprouts and red onion mix Dunkin Donuts coffee Chocolate covered pretzels Cranberry juice Apple cider Pork loin Green bean casserole Pumpkin Cheesecake Cinnamon Rolls Spanikopita Bacon and Chicken bruschetta So it looks like many of the Sams had a lot of the same foods. I so wanted to buy a lot of stuff like the cheesecake for instance! lol but I dont have room in my freezer to keep it so I'll have to go back. It was definitely worth the trip and I would love to do it again!
  10. That link was just for Walmart stores, not Sams Clubs. I went back and looked at the other link again and it does say all 610 Sams stores, so I will make a visit and hope they are participating.
  11. I hope to get to this event this weekend. Hoping it's all Sams club over the country correct? I asked my bf if he saw anything about it in the store as he goes quite regularly and he didn't see anything. Would love to try some new things and get some ideas as well for the holidays.
  12. I'm kinda torn about it. On one hand, I always give my parents a list because my mother never knows what to buy us and we both prefer it that way since she has no idea the things I am into and we dont have to worry about returns that way. I will give her a list of a bunch of things and allow her to pick from it, and she will usually throw in 1 or 2 things as well that I didn't ask for, but otherwise it works out well this way for myself and my daughter. Now, for other relatives telling others what to get their kids could be fine as well since the adult might have no idea what the kids are into. I dont quite know how I feel about the adults one. Maybe it's all in how it's relayed, but I can see it going both ways from being ok to being tacky depending upon the relationship and how's its relayed.
  13. I'm like you OP in the fact that I dont "do" BF like some of the people here either. Even though it would be nice to get some of the doorbuster deals I refuse to wait in line for 8+ hours and/or ruin my Thanksgiving by doing so. I usually head out early as well on BF morning (7-8ish) and just consider what I can get as something I got a great deal on. For the things I didn't get, I will just continue to go on the hunt for during the sales the rest of the month up until Christmas. I say if you go at it with an open mind that you're going to get as much as you can and not fret over not getting every item on your list, or expecting any of the huge doorbuster items, BF is still a fun day to be out and about enjoying the festivities and getting some good deals on things you need.
  14. I generally only use 1 credit card if I can help it that way I can maximize the rewards points or cash back on that card and I don't have to worry about making multiple payments to different banks. If you were going to use 2 cards for different stores to get in on any special offers they might entice you with, I would say to use the offers and then either pay them off or transfer them all to 1 card. Credit cards can be a very useful option as long as you are careful with them and disciplined enough to not overspend or not pay them off.
  15. I havent even gotten my Christmas stuff out of the attic yet of which I had usually done by now, but I also was not working as much the previous years than I have this year. I was considering a fake tree of which I was going to buy soon and get ready, but now I'm leaning more towards a real one again and therefore it wont go up until probably the weekend after Thanksgiving.
  16. Hope your DH can find a job! I know the feeling...my boyfriend was laid off only a month before Christmas last year. I know companies are hurting as well and it's always hard to let employees go, but at this time of year it's even harder. May your Christmas wish come true!
  17. Does she not have a credit card, debit card, bank account, etc? If it's only for a few hours and she is disciplined enough to pay it back, charge the purchase and then make a payment as soon as she gets paid. Most credit cards at least give rewards so she can really make out by being able to get what she needs, earning rewards points/ cash back from the credit card and not having to worry about any interest by paying it off immediately.
  18. I think thats perfectly doable...or even cheaper. Try Craigslist. There are people that will start giving trees away for free and/or selling/ giving away ornaments for cheap! Or, try thrift stores. Plenty of ways to get very cheap decorations. Grab a box of popcorn and make decorations with your kids and have them help hang ornaments on the tree. I dont think it will matter so much as what the ornaments are vs. the time spent decorating it together.
  19. I'm ready too! Getting antsy for the big ads I use an iPhone app called Christmas Gifts List and it allows me to put in the recipient, budget, check off items as bought and amount. I've already purchased the first gift and have been researching others and my goal now is to find gifts that are less expensive than I have budgeted for each person and see how low I can get this list. So far, I'm $22 under budget!! Now, if I can just stick to it and not get carried away with the shopping and good sales for the next 7 weeks or so, I'll be in good shape! lol
  20. My boyfriends daughter I think would certainly like some sort of jewelry item, of which I may do, but I'm also thinking of other people as well such as my boyfriend, father, grandmother, boy (7yrs), my own daughter who really isn't into jewelry, etc. Please keep the ideas coming. Great so far and some items, like the etching that I never would have thought of! :)
  21. Wow, that sounds like a neat idea! I think my mom would like something like that. Is there a "kit" that you buy with everything to start etching? Or just something you learn online? Would definitely like more info on this...and yes, these are exactly the types of things I'm looking for. Nothing too crafty, but still a nice handmade gift all the same.
  22. I am really liking the earlier openings over the last few years. I can get some shopping done on Thanksgiving evening after all the family festivities are over and not have to try and get my butt out of bed at 2-3 am Now there's no way that I would do it at a store that people started camping out at early Thursday morning or evening Wednesday evening like Best Buy, Walmart or the toy stores, but for a store that I only need to stand in line at for a few hours to get some good deals, yeah I'd do it.
  23. I just posted in the other thread about kinda being over and done with BF myself. It's still always fun to get the sale papers early on Thanksgiving morning and look over to see what everyone has and if anything catches my eye, but over the last few years that I've gone out, it hasnt been until later in the morning. I dont have the funds anymore for large expensive items and saving $20-30 isnt worth staying up all night to me. Now the earlier openings does appeal to me a bit since I dont usually have anything to do on Thanksgiving night and if there is anything worthy, I might consider hitting some midnight sales for instance, but I think my days of getting up at 2-3 am to go shopping are over. I also think it's kinda ridiculous that people are getting in line earlier and earlier every year and so unless you give up your Thanksgiving and start camping out early Thursday morning, you won't get anything anyway around here, so I'm not really bothering anymore. I'll try to get the best deals that I can with the normal BF deals and other deals up until Christmas, but my camping days are over.
  24. I've actually calmed down on BF for the past several years. I think in the past 2 years, I went out on BF, but not until later in the morning once all the early morning crowds were gone. Its not that I avoid crowds, but my only dd is now 18 and there really hasnt been anything worthy of standing in line all night for. Plus with limited funds, I cant afford the large ticket items anymore. When I was married, my ex was good about going out with me and there were plenty of nights that we spent all night long in line at Best Buy, camped out at Walmart, etc. but now, my bf doesn't want anything to do with BF. Plenty of good memories with hanging out and talking to the others in line, falling asleep in the chair at walmart and just the rush of getting that one item. I try to get as good of deals as I can with regular BF deals, or deals up until Christmas, but unless there is something I have budgeted for and really need to save money on, I dont get up anymore super early. It has been kind of interesting though that for the last few years (??) stores started opening up earlier and earlier on Thanksgiving night or about midnight, so depending upon what the sales look like this year and what I need, I might consider going to some of those. That is of course if my dd would ever give me a list. At 18, I have no idea what to buy her anymore LOL
  25. In order to try and save some money this year, I'm thinking of making a bunch of gifts, but to be perfectly honest, I don't like the idea of many of the handmade gifts I see online as they look too "crafty" to me. So, no mixes in jars, no lighted glass boxes, no crafty things if you get my drift. I've done gift baskets before and don't want to go that route. I got the idea to do this since I recently started getting into making jewelry for myself, and after looking online for a blingy iphone case they were so expensive that I made my own. So, for one of my friends, I plan on making her a case for her phone with crystals, decorative pieces, etc. that I can get for cheap using coupons and sales at craft stores. I was wondering if anyone had any other ideas for gifts that people can make that don't look like something I made. For instance, I don't think anyone would know that I made a piece of jewelry for them or a phone case unless I told them. Looking for those kinds of things. I still have a bunch of people, including kids to buy for that jewelry wont suffice, so I need other ideas. Anyone have any ideas to share?
