  9. Materially, an iPad would be nice. But mostly I hope somehow Beorn chooses and manages to come out for a visit. It has been six months since I've seen him...
  10. I usually focus on main courses for favorites. Thanksgiving Judy Rodgers three day dry-brined turkey, then roasted Alton Brown's Good Eats method. I do skip AB's brining, since I do the dry-brine instead. Hanukkah This holiday is about fried foods; not good for someone low carbing, but 'tis the season, right? If I can get a new rig out here (I seriously doubt Paul will ship me the one I own in Gator Town, even though he'll never use it), I may consider doing a fried turkey next year for my new family, if they'll let me, since Hanukkah falls extremely early in 2013 and Thanksgiving falls on the first day/second night of the festival. Chr-stmas Breakfast is one of several overnight french toast casseroles I have shared before. Dinner is all about standing rib roast with yorkshire pudding. While I don't worry about which rib I buy, etc., I do follow the suggestions of The Food Lab for dry aging (five days), salting (four days), and slow roasting followed by high blast of heat at the end. Absolutely wonderful stuff! Any planned overs is made in to beef stroganoff within a couple of days. Heaven. News Years I've never really gotten in to cooking for New Years, whether eve or day. I do that more for Rosh Hashannah. Perhaps that will change, now that I'm in a new space. Suggestions, anyone?
  11. As part of the tickets I got for the Trans-Siberian Orchestra winter tour (first year they're doing The Lost Chr-stmas Eve, or so I heard), I was entitled to a free download of their new 5 song EP: Dreams of Butterflies (on a Chr-stmas Night) when it was released. I received the email on the 29th of last month, but only now had time to download and listen to it. Now I'm really psyched for the show.
  12. After seeing those without power on the east coast, I'm thinking of stocking up on glowsticks to line hallways and stairs with at night. Has anyone seen glowsticks on clearance with the Halloween items? And does anyone know how long they remain viable left in a bag unused?
  13. I've never used hulu. How does one watch these shows on it?

  15. Besides the flavor, one reason why I love dry brining my bird and then using Alton Brown's Roast Turkey recipe. A 14-pound bird only takes about a total of two hours in the oven. I do dry brine instead of using AB's brine recipe, but his brine is good too. Watch the videos on the link, if you haven't seen the Romancing the Bird episode of Good Eats. Some great tips there. And I disagree with AB about stuffing. It's great, when made in the crockpot instead of the bird!
  16. I'm in new circumstances this year, and not in my "own" home (although I'm told to think of it as my own), so I do not know what the tradition is here. When I prepared the meal entirely, I aimed for about 6:00 pm.

  19. I love the holiday commercials from Publix. From the first one I recall of the family traveling by train to a soundtrack by Pat Metheny, through the Pilgrim family salt and pepper shakers for Thanksgiving, to the magical leaf from grandma to grandson (I think), I have always loved those commercials. I've written Publix several times, both via their website and Facebook page, asking them to upload the commercials to their website. No luck in getting it to happen as far as I know, so far. Since I moved, I'll miss them this year...

  22. I see the first post has not been updated with last year's Chr-stmas clearance dates. Did anyone keep track of them?
