When you start it up for the first time, you will go through a 10 minute set-up process. Once you get through, it will be ready to go. It is slow with the 1GB, it normally takes close to 2 minutes to start-up. Recommend getting it up to 2Gb of RAM as soon as possible. Once, you get it online, there are some Vista updates to be done too. Mine is running nicely. I love mine and you can't beat the price.

I've seen a few $399 laptops from CC or maybe it was BB since BF, but they come with Celeron processors.

Acer bought Gateway, who had bought Emachine. All three are now one company. Most people who buy these cheap laptops probably do not know too much about computing other than this is probably the best deal they will find in a store(they may not know how to or want to puchase online;)). People who deal with this stuff know when they read the specs, what they are getting for the price. So for the average person who can't afford or want a more expensive laptop this is a pretty decent deal. I have had three laptops since 2000; all have been Celerons(I went for price). They accomplished their missions of allowing me to work on things away from home, watch movies and play some games(like old Tomb Raider 1-3, even Medal of Honor:Allied Assault:p). I do HIGHLY recommend upgrading the RAM to 2GB. The RAM will make a vast improvement on processing time. I upgraded all three of my old machines.

No, the one at CC was a Compaq(HP). It had much better specs than this Gateway; if the post with the specs is accurate.

I think because Walmart had the Dell for $598 and then had the secret-sale of Dells, Toshibas and whatevers for $388, the employees were confused. So they marked the $598 Dells down to $388 for the people that 'pushed' the issue of the secret-sale. I think some people made out.

I think the low price may have moved more than they wanted to. I can't find them anywhere. Cheapest is Ebay.

I don't do RCA anymore. The last couple of items I have bought have died well before their time. I've had Coby products outlast RCA.

I got a package froam Amazon today. Similar label on outside of the box. The printing is small and it doesn't list the names. It does say DVD and XBOX360 game on it. That is enough for someone know what type of item it is, but not enough to guess what it might be.

I would ship it to him directly. It may be a day or so late. It is not released until Tuesday, but they usually ship it prior to that.

I usually do pretty good on them. I've called and gotten them straightened out on the phone. You have to keep track and follow up on them, especially the big $$$ ones;).
