samisma Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 ok. so maybe i'm over-reacting in my thread title. but i am irritated. i am a loyal kohls shopper. i love going there, and the deals they offer to cardholders sweetens the deal. so i went there on the 23rd in search of 2 things: a locket, and a digital photo keychain. after swallowing the sticker shock i got one locket, 10k gold. the price tag said $225, but 60% off, and I got an additional 30% off for being a cardholder. So I thought ok, it's more than I planned on, but it's still a good deal. Paid about $44 after tax. They were out of the keychains, so I head next door to walmart. They have the keychains, and out of curiousity I take a peak at their jewelry counter. Not only do they have more selection, but they have the exact same locket that I just purchased - and it's every day price is $24. They had another locket, that was even nicer, and larger, and it was 14k and it was only $28. Again, every day price. I bought the nice locket AND the keychain. So the kohls locket is being returned today. But I know better now, I'll be watching Kohl's prices closely. Their sale price + my cardholder discount was still way more than walmart. I'm not a walmart fan, but what on earth is Kohl's playing at by trying to say that their locket is originally $225? How much of a markup is that? I took photos of the one at walmart next to the price and sent it along with an email to kohls. But I still felt the need to rant. Sorry. I guess I've learned an important lesson. Unless it's clearanced at Kohls, it won't be going in my cart.
scrabbler Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 I stopped shopping at Kohl's a year or so ago. I went in to see an assortment of towels for my newly done bathroom. I was ready and prepared to pay more for a nice fingertip towel to hang in my bathroom and "look pretty". I find what I want and head up to the counter to pay for my purchase. I purchased 2 fingertip towels and the total? $38 and some odd cents. As I was writing my check, my head was asking me what I was doing. The total wasn't even reasonable nor sensible but I was so stunned, my hand continued to write the check. I got home and handed the bag to my dh and he drove back the few blocks and returned it for me. I read the Kohl's threads here and I don't get it. So what if it is 75% off? It is finally a normal, regular price. I still peruse Kohl's periodically. It gives me a nice reality check.
Melissa Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 It's always been obvious to me that Kohl's "original" prices include a huge mark-up. That's why I don't get too excited about their sales. I read about people on here exclaiming "Oooooh, Kohl's has 50% off all Fisher-Price toys!!" (or something similar) and I can't believe they actually think that's a bargain. Kohl's is wayyy overpriced to begin with, so a 50% off sale is no cheaper than most other stores' regular everyday prices.
Melissa Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 I read the Kohl's threads here and I don't get it. So what if it is 75% off? It is finally a normal, regular price. Exactly!! You read my mind!
labnpei Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 i agree with everyone else-kohls over inflates their prices to make their sales look like deals-not. i won't even go there unless it is 50% off and then i figure it is about the normal price everywhere else
swamperjmb Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 I agree with everyone about the inflation. I work there and am pretty good about watching the prices before I buy something. However, I think that their clearance deals that I get beat any clearance deals that I find at walmart and target. Not only that, but if you take into consideration the fact that their return policy takes pretty much anything back no matter how long you have owned it, then paying the higher prices just for that guarantee is worth it. There is nothing worse than haggling with walmart about returns!!
amyaj Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 I do agree w/ everyone that some of their prices are inflated. I will only shop there when I have the 30% coupons and shopping online w/ the free shipping option. I love buying clothes there and I like their quality. A lot of things I can find cheaper elsewhere but I do find good deals there now and then.
Sandi852 Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 I think that this is just the way Kohls handles their pricing. I would never pay full price for anything there and I know that on some Saturday during the month I will likely find what I am looking for at least 50% off with an additional cardholder discount. Macy's and JCPenney do their pricing the same way. Everything is always on sale and if it isn't the pricing just doesnt make sense. This is likely the product of numerous expensive marketing studies that have shown that people buy when they are given a "sale". Their pricing is inflated so they can advertise big percentages off which in turn drive customer traffic.
sf49erfreak Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 ya the main time i ever shop at kohls is when i have a 30% off coupon and then buy clearance items.
Rockfordmom Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 i agree with everyone else-kohls over inflates their prices to make their sales look like deals-not. i won't even go there unless it is 50% off and then i figure it is about the normal price everywhere elseAmen! And their "clearance" deals now STINK compared to the way that they used to do it! Their "sales" change every couple of days, and their "sale" prices are more than other stores regular prices.
First Lady Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 I too think they are very overpriced and I only shop there with their sale and clearance prices. I do love their 50%+ because I know the quality is much higher than WM or such. Their clothes outlast and withstand all the washing and tumblings we do. Their towels are way softer and thicker than others I have seen for similar or higher priced. I am a very smart shopper and don't fall for their "sales" they do sometimes, I pay attention and it pays off!
savvybuys Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 I too think they are way over priced...There is a big difference between SALE prices and CLEARANCE prices..I only shop the clearance rack and only with a 30% coupon..Not even the 10% or the 15% ones...If I dont have a 30% off then I just tell them I left it at home and they give it to me.... As for online...I will only look at the clearance stuff with 30% off coupon and free shipping...For example last Sept I purchased a breadmaker from Kohls online for $5 shipped...It was on clearance and then I used my 30% coupon and got free shipping...
Melissa Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 I love buying clothes there and I like their quality.Any of the womens' clothes I've bought there have shrunk after the first washing!
bargaingal2 Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 i agree with everyone else-kohls over inflates their prices to make their sales look like deals-not. i won't even go there unless it is 50% off and then i figure it is about the normal price everywhere elseI totally agree. Heck toys there even on sale are way more than most stores. I only go in for really good sales
krissy904 Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 Any of the womens' clothes I've bought there have shrunk after the first washing!I shop there a lot and never had this problem with Kohl's, but I know that it can happen. Cold water, hand wash, warm iron. I love their 90% racks, and I do agree that their prices are marked up, but when I can buy a Simply Vera (I guess this is "Kohl's only" cheapened Vera Wang collection) dress for 10 of 12 bucks, I think I'm getting a good deal because usually they still have a pretty good selection in stock. Hmmmm. Maybe I'm just fooling myself.
MonsterMutts Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 My mom got a snowflake necklace and the box said 700! I just saw it on sale for a little over 100....
