PSP or Gameboy advance

Recommended Posts

My DS's (6&7 year olds) both have the DS's and they love them.

If you have the orig. gameboy, you can play those games on them as well.

Plus some of the games are alittle cheaper than the PSP's.

My DS11.5 has the PSP. Which he hardly plays now, but still enjoys it when

he does.

I think depending on how responsible he is, and how well he takes care of his toys,

is a factor as well. I wouldnt spend $200 on a game that my DS7 is just going to leave anywhere. (not that $129 is much better). :(

I haven't considered the DS. I just did some research on it though and I think that may be what we end up getting him. I like the fact that you can play Gameboy Adv. games too! Thanks for all the input...and I'm always open for more!

My ds6 loves loves loves his leapster. He's able to play all the (age appropriate) games, but not able to play gameboy games nearly as well. Part of me is thinking of buying him a gameboy for Christmas, but then an even larger part of me says, "If it ain't broke don't fix it." Seeing as though he's thrilled with the Leapster.

Dh and I were talking the other day, and of all the presents we have EVER bought our boys, the leapster we got 2 years ago has had the most play.

As far as nintendo ds and psp - it depends on the age of your child, for me, I'd go with the ds for the 7 1/2, just because there are soooo many games available. My 12yo on the other hand, wishes he had bought the psp instead of his ds. We're looking to get him a psp for Christmas this year, it has so many neat features that work well for an older child.

The leapster is good, but I would be worried that at that age (7-8) they'd lose

interest in it within a few months-year. Then its money down the drain,

But thats JMO. :)

My ds7 has started losing interest in it since he recently discovered PS2. We're giving ours to ds4 and wanting to get a new game thing for ds7.

How does your DD do with the gameboy. Our DD is 4 and I have considered one of those or a leapster.

I don't think she really knows what she is doing yet but she still likes it. A lot of the time they will swap and she will just color on the ds. But it does keep them quiet in the car on long rides.

Being 7-8, your son should be getting into the PS3/Wii stage soon. The GBA seems to attract the slightlty younger kids into Pokemon and all that while the PSP is aimed towards the teens. All depends on the games he likes and your pocketbook (there's some heavy price differences there), but I'd recommend the PSP.

All depends on the individual, however here's the skinny on the portable videogame systems:

Leapster = pre-schoolers

GBA = elememtary schoolers (that system is old tech and should be leaving shelves soon)

Nintendo DS = elementary to Jr high kids, some gams for teens and adults

PSP = Jr high to high school teens and up to adults

I would go with the DS. We have the GB Color, GB Advanced, and the DS. My DD13 loves the DS, and DS 11 does as well. DS has hinted about a PSP but I think its just because we have a gamecube, n64 x3, ps2, wii, and orginal nintedo. My DD wanted the PS2 so bad for christmas she plays 2 games, but picks up the DS all the time!

My DD wants me to get a DS but I refuse to pay the $150 I've seen it for. Anyone know of one that's under $100?

The bare Nintendo DS Lite with minimal accesories is about $120-130 now. If you can wait a few more months (black friday is-a commin' ;) ) and make it a christmas present, it'll probably be available for a $100 or less price tag. I say 'available' because you'll have to fight for it if you want one that cheap. :eyepoppin

both my son 13 and dd6 has the DS and gameboy advance. the ds plays all the GA games so thats great they love playing them. a friend of mine got her son 10 yr the psp the thing i didn't like about it was that anyone who has wireless remote online service the PSP pick it up and the boy was going into porn sites and there is no way to put a parental control on it. after seeing that i didn't get the psp my dd father got it but he got it to watch movies not for the games. there are alot of movies out for the psp so if you like that feature its good.

My son has both the PSP and the gameboy advance SP. Once he got the PSP he hasn't touched the SP. LOL> It all depends if the 7 1/2 yr old is reponsible. PSP is much more expensive and has a LCD screen which is very touchy. Graphics wise I would say PSP. Cost wise SP. ITs all up to you though. PSP though doesn't have tons of kid games. My son is almost 13 so he likes that.

I'd say go with the PSP. Yeah, it's a bit more expensive, but it'll get more use as your son gets older. If you don't want to spend the extra $$$, then go with the Gameboy. I'm sure he'll be ecstatic with whichever one you decide on.

My 14 yo son has the PSP. Before vacation I bought my 6 & 8 yo guys the Nintendo DS. They fight constantly for their brothers PSP. Now I wish I would have spent the extra money for the PSP for the other two boys. Now I am hoping form some kind of deal this year on the PSP. If I had it to do again, I would definately buy the PSP. I find my 6 yo giving my husband leasons on the PSP. We not only have the DS, GB, Game Cube, Wii, and PS2, but everyone fights over the PSP. Including my biggest boy --- my husband. I have learned to buy all four of my guys the same exact thing. lol

You should consider the DS over the GBA, especially at your child's age. If it were a younger child, I'd say to go for the GBA SP, but new titles are not really available for the GBA (if they still make any new titles for it at this point, I'm sure it is very limited). There is a large assortment of titles available, but since your child will want to continue on to "bigger and better" games, then the best investment would to purchase either the DS or PSP. I'd opt for the DS at his age, since the PSP is geared more for an older crowd and you'll be able to find a lot more titles that your son will enjoy on the DS.
