I'm hoping they have some killer deals on the Surface Pro 3 this year. Messed with one for work and I think it would be a nice replacement for a laptop we use, just need a great price and the KB with it lol.

Is the $50.00 Amazon Kindle Fire Tablet a rebranded 1st gen verison?

Judging by the specs, no. This one includes front & rear cameras as well as a better resolution. Not as good as one of the HD's picture wise but it's 7" so a little bigger than the basic 6" HD. I'm an apple girl but I just preordered one for DD5. She uses her siblings fires as well as my iPad so this should be pretty decent for her.

No, not at all. Its all new and with generic interiors. It also has ads on it which cost $15 bucks to get removed.

It's a cheap tablet that a lot of kids will be getting this year and will be pissed it's not an iPad and 3/4ths of people will still call it an iPad anyway

Lol, on that note I'm glad that I'm capable of knowing the differences between 2 sets of tablets that don't remotely resemble each other. And I guess I better give myself & my husband a pat on the back since we aren't raising ungrateful children.

To anyone considering an amazon tablet, get an emulator on your Amazon account now so you can accumulate free apps, books, and other media between now and Christmas morning.  For those with very young children, there are some amazing apps that were popular PC games back in the day.  I love the Humongous games.  Putt Putt's Funhouse is free and many others are free from time to time.  Living Books are a great way to start youngsters associating words with sounds and fun.  A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and The Berenstain Bears Give Thanks are both free.  Many others.

Amazon has a Samsung Galaxy 4 tablet for $92 (8 gb/ 7 in).  It's for my 8 year old son (who is really hard on tablets...won't get him another iPad).  This seems like a good deal...anyone think that there will be better ones closer to BF?

Sounds like a pretty decent deal.

My two oldest sons have been beating on Samsung Galaxy Tab2's for two years now.  And they were refurbs when I bought them.  One got a cracked screen in a school lunch room incident, but that was a year ago and it still works fine.

Black Friday and the days around it will likely have a few better deals, but you're going to have to fight for those most times, or stay up all night hitting refresh or something.  I scored a Nabi Dreampad last Black Friday for $99 direct from Nabi.  It's geared to younger kids, but has a better than 1080P HD screen, quad core processor, 2GB of RAM and a huge battery.  Awesome buy.  But it was a last minute announcement from Nabi - not widely publicized, and you had to be logged in to their website at like midnight Pacific time to try and snag one.  I don't know how many they sold but they were gone in minutes.

Thank you!  I have an iPad and my son has my old iPad, so I don't know much about the Galaxies.  I'm definitely not investing in an iPad for an 8 year old!!  Do you think it would be good for apps, watching Youtube and Netflix??  That's really all he needs it for.

You could also consider the new $50 Kindle. It's a 7 inch screen. It's 8gb, but you can add a micro sd card up to 128gb. It's not HD, but I had one and the screen looked decent to me.  I sent mine back because I couldn't download my Amazon music to the card, so there wasn't enough memory for me. But if he mostly will be watching YouTube and Netflix, it's half the price.

Also, a lot of people say you can't download all apps to a Kindle, but I've never found an app I couldn't get to. You may have to download an app called MobileMarket1 (or something like that - I can't remember), but most Google apps can be found there.

I don't know anything about Galaxy either. My son has a Nexus (same thing? No?) and he likes it.  But this is another option for you.

I will be looking to get 3 tablets most likely this year. I am an Android guy but the DD want iPad. Which ever I can get the most bang for my buck will be what there unwrapping.

Question...and I think I already know the answer, but here it goes.  We're an all Apple family, so we use itunes.  If I get my son a Kindle Fire or Samsung Galaxy tablet, would he be able to download itunes and the apps he's already purchased on the new tablet?  My thinking is no - different OS, right??  He has pages of apps we've already purchaed...hate to start over with a different kind of tablet.

That is correct.  However, there are programs you can download that will strip the music from iTunes and save it to your computer, then you can use it on other devices.  I'm not sure if they will also strip apps, but I kind of doubt it.

That's what I thought, thanks for confirming!  I guess I'll see if there are any iPad deals...I really only wanted to spend around $100 since he's only 8 and is really hard on his tablet.  But I guess I have to weigh in the value of apps as well.

As stated music can be transferred there are apps out there to do it. Applications themselves no they are coded for iOS or Android. You can probably find the same app on the other one's app store but if it's a pay app most likely you would have to buy it again.

The last couple years, Walmart and Target have both had (what I consider) good deals on the iPad mini, by giving store gift cards (last year the price at WM was $199, and the gift card was $30). That won't get you quite to the price point you want, but then you could a kid-proof case and it might be worth the $$.  This one gets good reviews on Amazon and is less than $20: http://www.amazon.com/VAKOO%C2%AE-Shockproof-Silicone-Portable-Display/product-reviews/B00SO5JQ4Y/ref=dpx_acr_txt?showViewpoints=1. If that is too "little kid" looking for his taste, there are a lot of cases out there geared toward keeping the device safe in the hands of children so you could probably find something he'd be ok with.

My son doesn't like to use his iPad with the case on, so he always takes it off.  Thanks for everyone's help.  I'm just to wait to see what kind of deals there are for iPads this year.  The price of the Kindle Fire is very tempting, though!

Hoping that there will be a 16gb android I can get my dad. Nothing really expensive cause it will be dropped, he'll forget screen protectors, and at some point I'll be searching the house for it after he claims one of my cats took it. (they never take it he just forgets where he set it.)

I'm tempted by the fire for myself although I had planned on getting an ipad mini 2 for a replacement of my current fire.  The thing is, I really use my fire for reading 90% of the time.  I NEVER play games, watch movies, listen to music on it.  I do pop on and off facebook and sometimes do basic searches on my fire but that's about it.  I'm thinking an ipad mini will be overkill for my needs/wants and I'm tempted by the ultra cheap price of the kindle fire.

I highly recomend the $49 fire tablet. I got mine Thursday and have barely put it down. the new Amazon Underground store is great every app in it is free. I also like the new layout for email and the overall new layout for the operating system. The best part though is the expanable memory which neither Kindle or Apple has ever had.

I have a Nexus 7 (2013) that I love and my mom has the 2012 version that needs replaced. Thinking of a Samsung Galaxy 8". Hoping Staples will put on sale and I can find a coupon.

What does everyone think of the Ipad Air 2 sale at Staples.  It is on sale for $479.  I can take that and price match at Target.  My dad is retired from there and gets the employee discount plus red card discount.  So, total would be $410.  Is the $479 a good price for this.  Do you think it will go lower or should I just go with this one.  (I can price match most any of the stores to Target and get the extra discounts - just wondering on the sale price if that seems good?  Thanks.

eVeryone in my houselhold have fires and i have a basic kindle also. I even bought my young grandchildren fires last year. I still want to buy a new one. Maybe my son can retire his 1st generation fire and get a new one. I love the fires. I have over 1000 books on mine and also many apps. My son converts all his digital movies and keeps them in a file ont eh computer. He puts them on as he wants to watch them.

Keep in mind that once more and more sales happen (and giving away GC w/ purchase), more and more people will be doing what you are and getting them from Target with RedCard.  Eventually their stock will diminish and when that great deal comes along, you may have to be the first 20 in line....  That's probably a pretty good deal, but hard to predict anything will be a whole lot better until some of those ads leak.  Good luck!
