omadeal Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 For the past 3 years I've added a lot of strangers to my Xmas shopping list. There is a great web based org started by an Army mom when her son was in Iraq called soldier's angels. Its motto: May no soldier go unloved. May no soldier walk alone. May no soldier be forgotten, Until they all come home. SoldiersAngels.org The lady that started it, Patti Bader-Smith sends me emails with the wish lists of soldiers that are likely to be forgotten at Christmas. Most ask for very simple things (last year calendars, video games and tennis shoes). I've attached a sample email below. It is a 501c3 so anything you send can be deducted. Consider adding them to your BF list. It is a great way to make your Christmas better. Also, for those folks that are never satisfied, I have taken to sending a gift in their name and giving them a card telling tham about what I did. They'll never be happy-but with this strategy someone will!!! Look at the web site, send Patti an email even if you can only spare $10 for a couple of doorbuster DVDs at least they'll know someone is thinking of them. As an aside, my 8 yo and 5 yo kids have really enjoyed doing some of the shopping. They know that it means a few less things for them--but they still love it. email: Hello Patti, First thing I would like to say is how much I appreciate what you and your organization are doing for the troops everywhere. After talking to my guys I actually got a list out of them:-) I know they will be appreciative of anything that they receive. We would love to have Christmas lights and mini trees definitely. Those will come in handy for the Christmas Party I am planning already. My guys said the following would brighten their holidays: mp3 players, dvds, cds, blank dvds, blank cds, ps2 games, playstation games, massaging foot tub, xbox games, any kind of snacks and candy, and two of my guys said a 2006 Harley Davidson Deuce and 3 of us said our wives:-) I told them that the Harley would probably be too much for shipping so they might have to wait for that one and i'm not sure if my wife would want to be stuffed in a box to get mailed over:-) Anything you and your organization can send to put a smile on their faces will make it worthwhile. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and god bless you all, Allen SFC ALLEN CARTER ENGLISH RHHT 3D ACR MOTOR SERGEANT CAMP SYKES, IRAQ
beccas302 Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 What an awesome idea! I've already "adopted" two soldiers this year, my sister in law and her husband! http://operationmilitarypride.org/packages.html The above is a good website for ideas things to include (and not to include!) in a care package. I asked my husband what he liked getting when he was in Kuwait years ago, and he said books and magazines were a big hit along with familiar foods, etc.
spendhismoney76 Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 All of my prayers & thoughts are with you & your child so far away from your gentle comforted hands that only a mother has for her child. I also have family there in the war, my brother and 2 cousins as well. We all wish & pray that our loved ones could be here with us for the holidays & true that it will be hard for us & for them as well, but just keep praying and hopefully soon one day, ALL of our loved ones will be close to us again. Sincerely.....spendhismoney76:)
copados1993 Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 Thank you all so much for caring to do something like that! My husband is in Iraq and will be missing ANOTHER Chritmas with his family. Our kids are very proud of their Dad as am I. It is so nice to see that other people care about the men and woman that are protecting our future. They give up so much to make sure that we are all safe. I know from my husband, that when he recieves something no matter what it is, he is so greatfull. Just know that you are doing a wonderful thing! God bless you all!

Tracy72 Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 we sent 9 boxes out last yr to anysoldier...the hardest part was choosing from all those names listed who to send to..heart breaking tome...lol
Booterbunz Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 I have a tendency to buy for women soldiers. They sort of get left out more often. So, I'll send a box of different sized tampons, panty liners, pads, shampoo and conditioner, tweezers, magazines, and whatever else I think that they could use.
Kandy Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 the anysolider.us takes you to this link with a pop saying the other site is not going to be used much longer http://anysoldier.com/
sunprincess831 Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 My work actually has adopted some soldiers they have gone over to Iraq. But, from what my husband tells me (he's Military Police) when they get sent over seas they love to get anything. The soldiers will get together and just start trading stuff around and handing stuff out to the other soldiers who didn't get anything.
alimfp Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 I'll have to look at the sites posted tonight. Do any of them ask for just holiday cards? I'd be able to afford to send cards I think. Another q, how much is it to send a card overseas (like to Iraq for instance)? I've only mailed stuff to Australia (as far as my mailing out of the country).
biomajor Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 They have APO/FPO addresses so it's still normal US shipping rates--this is a great idea--Hey debbie, which is your husband's unit??
omadeal Posted November 8, 2005 Author Posted November 8, 2005 for the person that asked about cards...they love to receive them. and when I send one I send a blank with it. That way if they want to send one home they can. Not a lot of Hallmark stores on the battlefront:) I went to the paper outlet this week and bought boxes of alloccasion and christmas cards to send over. They seem to love to be able to send real greeting cards home.
