AudreyNicole
So says my 6 year old. We recently had 2 fishy funerals, so my little Joshua decided that Santa would be the one to bring him his new Goldfish. Slightly paniced, I told him that it would be really hard for Santa to drive the sleigh and hold the goldfish at the same time. His response was "MOM, he's SANTA! He can definately do to things at once." LOL! And then followed it up with "Don't worry mom, I am sure he has a plan." I thought I would leave it alone for awhile, because I needed time to think of a comeback... This morning, as he was getting dressed, Joshua said, "So I wonder if Santa has a gameplan for my fish delivery yet?" Hmmmmm... So I know for sure that these little buggers would never survive outside of the tank for so long, beings that I would have to buy them early in the day on Christmas eve. That's all I would need to have him wake up Christmas morning to floating fish... LOL! So, I was thinking of getting him a giftcard for the pet store and writing a note to put in his stocking. That way he can pick them out himself, and I am off the hook. What do you all think? Anyone have another idea? I really love that he believes in the magic of Santa. It makes this time of year all the better!
nick_jenni_jocelyn
awww how sweet! I love it too when they believe in Santa. My DD is also 6, almost 7, and she has asked a few questions but so far, so good, I think. Good luck on the fish.... We too have had too many fish funerals and don't think I could do another one, lol.
rjncmj
Suppose a big box of fish crackers under the tree wouldn't work? I think the gift card is a great idea. Then he knows he's getting his fish and he has all the fun of picking it out. My daughter is obsessed with Zhu Zhu's and is absolutely sure that Santa is bringing her one. When I ask her what if Santa doesn't bring her one, she gets this look of shock and horror on her face.
amyers12345
I pulled this trick off last year! My SIL brought fish while we were at my family's Christmas Eve. We're out in the boonies, so she ran to Walmart as they closed and put them in the tank. When we got home the kids went straight to bed and never noticed. I had a note ready just in case saying he had to drop them off first. If you can't do that, tell him that it's too cold at the North Pole and some of the places he has to stop at first, and the fish can't survive in the cold water. rogue1230
Is it just a regular goldfish? or a more exotic fish that requires the air filter et. al? If just a regular gold fish or beta, you could buy it a week before or what not and keep it in a bowl in your room? or in an unnoticable place? Christmas night, put the bowl, or bigger bowl under the tree with a ribbon around it? Maybe?
georgiapeach717
rogue got my idea. I love the idea of the whole fish bowl under the tree with a ribbon...now THAT would show the true power of santa and his multitasking skills! ha! santa's mulitasking skills.....if only they appreciated "Mrs Santa's" every day mutitasking skills as much as they do his on one stinkin' night!!! LOL!!!
momof3luvs1
i love the gift card idea, or if its possible to put the fishbowl w/ bow under the tree. I must say that if I was you I would try to convince your little one to want a beta fish. They are the same size as a goldfish and come in awesome colors like blue and red( but u can only have 1 per tank) they live 4ever. I had a beta that lasted 5 years and it was in a small fishbowl w/ no filter. How great would a red fish look under a christmas tree
conj
ya... have them in a seperate bowl.... will your neighbors house them for you for a day or so? Do you own cats? would fish under the tree be a problem?
tntsmomie
Yep, I immediately thought of putting it a smaller bowl (like a beta). That way, you can tie a nice pretty red ribbon on it and set it near his other gifts. And it'd still show him how great at multi-tasking Santa really is! Find a nice, quiet, out-of-the-way spot for Christmas Eve, then put the fish out after DS has gone to bed. The gift card is a great idea, too! AndreaInNC
Do you not have a 24 hour Walmart where you live? I don't know what their Christmas Eve hours are though, but you might be able to pull that off.
AudreyNicole
I love the fishbowl under the tree idea, but we have cats, and I know they'd go fishin' LOL! I do like the idea of a beta fish. He already has a small (now empty) 2 gallon tank in his room, so that's where the replacement would go... If I do that, I can just add him to the tank after DS goes to sleep and he'd never know. But I worry about transitioning him from the water he comes in to the water in our tank. Will it kill him? Our tank has a filter too. Do you think a beta will be ok in that kind of enviroment? I know they require very little room and upkeep, so will the bigger tank be too much for him? We have had lots of betas in fact (over time- separately of course). They pretty much survive anything I believe- I think they come from nasty water places. I think they are probably about the easiest fish for survival/care/younger kids- they live in those crappy little cups in the pet store. Just make sure when you pick it that the colors are vibrant so you know it is halfway healthy =) I miss fun Santa stuff!

If you're worried about transitioning the fish, let it "float" at the top of the larger tank in it's bag for 10-15 minutes or so, then release it. Or keep it safe in its pet store cup, and bring it out in the morning maybe with a note from Santa explaining that he asked "Mom" to keep it safe from the cats until DS could safely put it in his tank.We had 2 that we kept for well over a year, and I just rehomed them to a friend b/c our kittens were WAY too curious...so I completely understand about not being able to put it under the tree!
