  1. uscboy, People who purchased the $1,000 tv wouldn't have spent another $800 to get something better. At first you were trying to prove EDTVs are dishonest. Then you tried to prove that it isn't really that great quality. Then you tried to prove that you should get an HD set to prepare for the future. NONE of these have made any sense at all. All of which you could't reply to what I responded with after you tried to make your point. And now you are trying to argue against plasmas altogether. You should really stick with one point, try to prove that, then move on.
  2. - Uhhh, I thought that was your entire point, and now you decide it isn't? Whoa, you are making one great argument! - Of course it will, but how long has there only been 5 channels of HD, or the other 11 channels? Over a single year, with very few upgrades. - Sorry I have to ask this, but how old are you? "I can't afford it, and I don't care about HD. Hmm, maybe I should spend extra money on something I can't afford" - That makes sense to you? - I was just saying that because you tried to use Blue Ray as part of your argument, which you see now doesn't really work
  3. uscboy, you are preaching to the wrong client base. People who bought those $997 EDTVs wouldn't spend $1800 on an HD version. It has to downconvert the signal, but it WILL ACCEPT IT PERFECTLY FINE. It should be pretty common knowledge that the 480p signal won't display the quality 1080i has at all- nobody is trying to argue that. You talk about Blu Ray, yet... most TVs that do that are WAY out of a normal person's price range, and use 1080p. On top of that, you need a $3,000 DVD player, and on top of that, the DVD itself- which will be very expensive. So to make the argument "prepare for the future, now" doesn't sound too convincing when you look at the $8,000+ cost. I noticed you still haven't even answered my above questions, but continued to go back to your original post and basically repeat it. If you don't want to try to convince people that EDTVs are dishonest, just don't reply. If you do, you should do it in a way people will listen. If you break down your entire last reply, it boils down to "spend $800 more so in a few years (when HD really hits the market) you will be up to par" - Then you just wasted your entire time here, because everyone who has purchased that TV (that I talked to) doesn't think it is going to display 1080i nor 720p. It even says right on the box it is 480p.
  4. It will accept all HD signals. I figured you would be able to respond, but doesn't appear so. Oh well. If you really want to try and prove your original premise, you might want to take some more time to reply.
  5. - Which is about 90% of the entire population. uscboy, don't have anything to respond with about what I said earlier?
  6. Most items have a limit, and will only let you purchase 1 per person/household. Nice idea though... You would need to make sure you bring along a rather large gun to make sure the people who have been waiting in line for hours, just to see you take half the items, don't kill you.
  7. - Any reference links to go read? - Who was saying this?
  8. I was actually wondering what GottaDeal could do better, not the stores. I don't think there is enough database space to discuss what the stores could do better. I am sure Ross/Brad would do what they could if they saw it would help. The price for flyers shouldn't be too expensive, and the turnaround on them might be fairly good. I think I only recruited around 3 people for GottaDeal, if I had flyers there would have been a TON more.
  9. - I was referring to you trying to prove EDTVs are dishonest as a "battle". - This entire thread is about a PLASMA. I haven't researched other types of TVs, so I couldn't comment on something that doesn't relate to this particulr topic. - People who bought this don't plan to spend their time watching the very few HD channels available. Nobody I talked to is expecting to get HDTV quality out of the EDTV for HD channels. - What's the point of having a built-in HD tuner if it doesn't do HD? Also, where did you read this tv can't do HD? The manual, box, product specs, and just about everyone that knows anything about the TV, claims it will do HD. But who knows, it sounds like you know more than everyone else. - The only thing that didn't sound biased was TvBob's information. He didn't use words like dishonest, and stuck mearly to facts and not unprovable opinions. It really sounds like you didn't read that thread I linked to earlier regarding HD/EDTVs and their myths. Btw, what's your AVS forum username?
  10. As bad as I feel, I wouldn't have replaced it. Although I would have gave some information about what can be done about it, instead of blowing it off. Hope the man doesn't get jail, but instead is required to visit some anger management classes.
  11. - Wow, price sure dropped on that. The one you couldn't stop talking about I think was around $249 or $299 w/ that QAM technology I think. - And according to the newspaper, it was considered the 2nd best buy item for Black Friday. - NONE of the people I talked to, thought it would give a better picture than these $2000+ HDTVs. Most of the people who got in on the EDTV deal at WalMart, plan to use it for minor HD viewing, but mainly for DVDs and standard TV (Note, these opinions are based off of what I saw, and people who I have talked to at other Walmarts). Those who watch HD a lot, mentioned they already have an HDTV, and this is going to be used in one of their bedrooms or spare rooms. You are fighting a losing battle. There are too many people out there that know quite a bit about HDTVs and EDTVs. After about 10 minutes of reading it seems like I can make a pretty good argument about EDTVs.
  12. Haven't mentioned it because I don't have one However, it would be either Cox Cable, or that one TV Tuner card (that you couldn't stop talking about earlier this year) that will let me "borrow" the HD channels. I won't take advantage of HD until I get an HDTV, and the number of channels increase greatly. About 6 months ago, I believe it was with DirectTV, they only offered about 5 normal channels in HD; Cox Cable on the other hand offered 11. Made my Uncle switch from his Direct TV to Cox.
  13. Isn't Blu Ray going ot be 1080p, while most of the current HDTVs are only 1080i? Kind of making the "prepare for the future, now" argument not supportive?
  14. That quote of TvBob wasn't saying/implying "that HD on an ED tv looks as good/better as HD on an HD tv". He said the exact opposite. - I agree, a few years from now I would expect HD to actually have more than 11 channels, and being able to watch DVDs with a better video signal. The 11 channels that HD is actually in, are just sports channels. By the time HD is actually going to be the norm, the TVs we buy today will be outdated or at least half the price we paid for them. - Blu Ray? Where? I heard that with the huge bandwidth costs, Blu Ray wasn't going to really make it mainstream- but I'm no expert. Nobody is trying to argue that HDTV is going to look as good on an ED as it does on an HD. Its just that most people are not going to make use of the whopping 11 channels of HD, and thus would be better off saving their money on an ED. It is these statements right here that make me happy to have people like TvBob: Btw, you don't have to hit return while typing out a paragraph, the forum here will automatically format it. ------------------------------ Also, isn't Blu Ray and HD DVD going to be 1080p? Something that a lot of these HDTVs do not have?
  15. Ah, so these recorders actually record a video feed? Sounds like a pretty good deal to me :)
  16. It seems like there are quite a few DVD Recorders this year, but what are people actually going to use them for? They won't copy normal DVDs, since all are CSS Protected. Are people just planning to plug in their camcorder and record that video?
  17. - LOL TvBob did not mention ANYWHERE that HD on an ED tv looks as good/better as HD on an HD tv. The myth I see now is that people assume that their DVDs are going to look awesome on an HD, and that's why they get an HD. Sorry, but you just paid a lot more than you should have if you plan to use it for non-hd tv. The EDTVs actually look better with DVDs. For people who do not pay that hefty monthly HD bill for their 8-11 HD channels, an EDTV is a MUCH BETTER OPTION. It's people like you, uscboy, who try to make these EDTVs look bad. Truth is, you are here saying 480p doesn't look at good as 1080i- REALLY????? That's not what people are trying to disprove. The fact is EDTVs are the better tv for watching DVDs- they suck for HD. Read this A Primer for HDTV Newbies and come back and reply after you know a little bit more about the subject.
  18. I got it. Arrrived at 1:30am, waited until 5am. Talked about GottaDeal like it was king. Apparently quite a few others knew about it. After all of the research I did on the TV and the deals, I was able to get some of us entertained for quite some time. The EDTV is going to be AWESOME for my 55+ dvd collection. It sounded like the EDTV was going to be crap at first, until I actually did some research on it. TvBob summed things up great.
  19. Ultimate Electronics is known as a less expensive Radio Shack, with a lot more home theater equipment. UE has to do sales like that so people actually show up.
  20. Turns out my local Ultimate Electronics has a JVC DVD player w/ model: XV-N310B for only $45. Maybe it would be better to get that, and then buy a cheapo used VCR.
  21. For some people Black Friday is not quite over with yet. Radio Shack has the Samsung DVD/VCR player for $99.99 minus a $25 Gift Card (I called and they said they could apply it to the $99.99 price, thus paying $75.99 + tax). According to some specs, it looks like it will do 5.1 surround, as well as 480p, both requirements for this purchase. I haven't ever purchased something at Radio Shack before, since they are so expensive, I haven't found anything that great. However, I found that here it lists the DVD player as not having "Dolby Digital Decoder" which makes me think it might not be what I want. Any suggestions?
  22. If people are going to be their by 2am, which it sounds like is going to hold to be true, then I must leave soon so I beat them. Miranda, what are you planning to grab?
  23. I am, and about ready to take a shower. Decided at midnight it wouldn't be a good idea to take a 1 hour long nap.
  24. For next year's Black Friday, I would love to be able to either order/print out GottaDeal flyers to pass out to people waiting. Maybe include something like a keychain, or something really cheap that will get people to remember it a year later, or even signup once they get back from their morning shopping. Anyone else see something that should be added/changed?
