Mine tries to pull that too, but since they were the ones that sent the coupon out via email I don't really see how they could refuse to take it. -

Me too... -
The angel trees that are done in my area through the salvation army only accept clothing items for the angels. If the parents want the children to recieve toys they have to sign up through Toys for Tots.

That's really nice of you. I'm sure she will be very appreciative!

lol. I thought I was the only one. Our youth group works all year as "handy" people. They do "odd" jobs for the church members, raking leaves, washing cars, cleaning houses, mowing lawns... whatever to raise money for their Christmas celebrations. The first is the senior center... our youth pastor gets a list of residents that would like to be "adopted" and the kids shop for them. They cater a special dinner in for them on Friday night, and spend a whole evening visiting with the residents, singing Christmas carols and playing games. The lists can get really bad, we had some expensive requests last year... but every one was filled. It took up over 50% of the kids' savings, I won't begin to tell you how many hours it was. We had adopted 10 seniors, and 3 said thank you to the kids, several of the others complained that they didn't like what was bought, even though it was what was on their list. The next morning the kids go and pick up 8 children from the baptist home. They give each child a certain amount of money. In order to raise extra money last year each member of our youth group asked their parents to take something back that we had bought them around a certain $ amount and give them the money instead. The parent was to write down what they took back and put it in a envelope to give their child Christmas morning so their child would know that item had been purchased for them. It was their way to give a little something extra to these kids. Each child has a list of 5 things that they "need" (clothing items) provided by a worker at the home, any money they have left is theirs to spend anyway they wish. We take them to the mall, Walmart where ever they wish... and our kids spend hours with them helping them shop. I'm always amazed when they buy their items, and then they start shopping for their "house parents" a Christmas present, instead of blowing the money on themselves. We then take them to a huge amusement center... let them all play and have pizza - then we take them back. And you can bet that every child will tell our youth group thank you and how much they appreciate what they do for them... and it touches our youth like nothing else. I should note that this is what our youth group chose to do instead of having parties every year for themselves. This to me is what Christmas is about ... giving.

First, let me say that I'm sorry for all of your losses. I started dating a guy when I was 15 and he was 17. He played baseball for a minor league team in my town... and even though he lived in North Carolina we managed to break the odds and stayed together by frequently visiting one another. (thank goodness our parents liked one another...lol.) We got engaged on my 18th birthday in Sept. He was killed on Christmas Eve that year by a drunk driver. I lost my father 15 years ago, and not a day goes by that I don't think of him. Christmas was his FAVORITE holiday. He always went all out... he really was just a big kid at heart. We knew it was his last Christmas... he had been dx with terminal cancer and given 6 months to live the previous July. It was a miserable day... all I kept thinking was, I'll never get to celebrate this holiday with my daddy again. I was 24 years old. He turned 69 on Jan 20, and died on Jan 29. So, you can see I've been on both ends... knowing and not... I don't think one is better than the other. They both stink... These are a few things I do to help make the holidays a little more bearable. Put a few of your loved one's ornaments on your own tree... especially one's that you know were special to them. Have a family open house... sit around talking and sharing funny memories of these loved ones, it really does help. Make a donation to a charity or adopt a needy angel in their memory... I have a CD that I made of their favorite Christmas music... it plays all the time at my house throughout the holidays.

Mine is definately a hodge podge tree.. Full of homemade ornaments, and ornaments that have special meaning to me. I started buying my son a hallmark ornament series ornament the year that he was born... as he got older the collection grew to include other ornaments of things that he was interested in at the time. Those are the ornaments he will take with him when he moves out, and hopefully save to share with his future (way in the future) children... I've lost a lot of family members in the last few years.. and as we have gone through their items I've always saved a few of their ornaments to put on my own tree... just a special tribute to help me through the holidays.

iPod Touch @ ToysRus *Sun & Mon ONLY* 2 GCs w/purch
KrisinTn replied to fairydustcrissy's topic in Offline Hot Deals
I went and got one today for ds for Christmas, and got both cards. I also got him to put in my rewardsrus number so I earned 1 $5 certificate to be mailed to me later... well, actually pretty close to two certificates by the time I bought the 15 month repair/replacement plan. I don't think you'll see a better deal on this Ipod. -
It's our Christmas tradition. My ds always adopts a boy and girl from the tree, typically ones around his age, and we take a whole day to shop just for them. We have "angels" here at work too, children of our clients that have been affected by HIV, I always adopt one, but I'm thinking I will probably adopt 2 this year. We also do the Toys for Tots drive too. It breaks my heart to think of all the children that wouldn't have Christmas. Thank your sister for all she does!
