What you ran into was a case of laziness. OR, someone else told that employee they were sold out. It isn't policy to hold back anything, for any store.
If you're going to BB, I would get the SanDisk Sensa 1GB MP3 player for $35. This is an excellent deal and will be fine for a 10yr old.
Unfortunately, 10yr olds care about what is "cool" which is the Ipod right now. The Sensa would be fine though.
Most retail employees on BF don't really care about making a "large" sale.
Pretty sure the $149 price is just a typo by GD. This might be accounted for the fact that the SD600 has a large "Save $50" red dot next to it. While you do save $50, this is already accounted for in the $199 price, since it is normally $249.99.
In the past, its been my experience that stores will release all available merch. first come, first serve. So enough people come in on Friday, I would expect it all to be gone.
I would say its the worst, but it would be a better deal if it really was $99. It is only $99 when you sign up for Vonage. I think the HP from bestbuy is a much better deal, so worth the $80 extra over the Compaq from CC.
512mb is MORE then enough for word proc and web browsing. Plus, when you do decide to upgrade to Vista, a ram upgrade would be cheap and easy to come by.
You can check with your local store for a concrete answer, the official price matching thread for more information, but most retailers will not pricematch BF items.
The answer to your wondering is in an article that came out a few years back about BestBuy's belief that BF shoppers are what they would call "devil" customers. While BestBuy was the only company that had the guts to say so publicly, all other retail companies think the same way.
I was surprised by the ad to say the least. I was hoping they would come out with something to match the $1600 Toshiba Plasma. That panny is $400 more though. I would also rather pay the extra $80 and get the HP laptop from BB.
Many of the the Friday/Saturday "deals" are things we've seen before leading up to BF. Stores know they don't have to discount everything becuase many people assume incorrectly that those prices are the lowest they'll go. Obviously with a <$400 laptop, this is the case.
