We get credit when someone registers as well as a percentage of the fees eBay collects if you bid on something (or use Buy it Now) and actually win the auction. If you bid on something but dont win, we don't receive anything from what I remember. Hope this helps.

I would say it's feasible. As you suggested it would likely have to be disabled while the BF site is running, and considering that the BF site and forums will be open in less than two months, it's something that probably wouldn't happen until early next year. It's one of those things where we have to decide if enough people will use it to justify the work involved to set it up. For example, on the main site when we added the user customization stuff well over a year ago for changing how things are displayed, etc... so far barely over 100 users have used it out of the thousands of daily visitors we have to the main site. In fact those options will most likely be removed from the next site design just to make things a little more efficient in terms of the coding. So we'll think about it :)

I think I remember reading that Costco offers one day "browse" passes which let you look around but won't let you actually buy anything. This was a few months ago so I don't know if it has changed.

If a thread is very old, there will be a checkbox at the bottom where you have to check and verify that you realize it's an old thread, but after checking it you should be able to reply. We do that because in most cases, there is no reason to reply to old threads and it stops people from inadvertently replying without realizing that it was an old thread, but if you have a reason to reply, then you are able to. If there is no checkbox and you don't understand what I'm saying, let me know.

That is true, which is why pretty much all deal forums are open to lurkers. The Lounge here is semi-private (around 900 people can see it) and when Black Friday comes, that entire section is going to only be available to members, which really will increase the member count. The way I look at it, even if you make someone register to view threads, if they don't want to post, they won't post anyway, and if they want to post, they would have registered already. We have the bandwidth, etc... to allow lurkers to view things, so there is no reason to change that right now.

Yes it is, and running sites like this is my full-time job. So while there aren't many financial expenses such as hosting to run a site like this, there is a huge time committment.

We make money through commissions from things you guys buy through the site. So if there is a deal at Amazon for example, and someone clicks that link and places an order, we get a small percentage of that back. You pay nothing more for your purchase, we don't have to charge anything or have annoying ads, so everyone wins :)
