I figured I'd just go and buy a KitchenAid because this is getting rediculous. Kohl's had the 5qt. Heavy Duty Stand Mixer with adjustable bowl on the back cover of the flyer for $199.99 plus a $10 gift card by mail. Regular retail is $299 for this model. I went there this morning to get one and decided to apply for the Kohl's card to get the 15% off when I got to the register. It ended up ringing up for $189.99, so with the 15% off it was only $161.49 + 9.69 (tax) = $171.18 and I got to bring it home today! I'm pretty pleased. Hopefully one of my children will be pleased when I pass it down, lol. My mom had bought one but gave it to my sister when she inherited my grandma's KitchenAid from the 1930's. We used that thing A LOT when I was little and it still works perfectly! My mom said that she broke one prong on the whisk and the cord is starting to fray, but not bad for about 75 years of service! Waiting for some "super sale" time somewhere when I can catch one like it on clearance for around $150 or less. (Yeahhhh, dream onnnn! LOL!) Don't forget to check out the KitchenAid web site www.kitchenaid.com and tell that story over on their forums. She said that just last night he was whining that all he wants is a KitchenAid and a lawn tractor, lol. He's the one I called last night to ask which model I should buy, so I know he's going to be both surprised and excited! I, on the other hand, am not very domestic so I'm just happy I got a good price. The cheapest I had found these was refurbished on Amazon for $159.99, so for $2 more they're brand new. meo Posted December 19, 2005 Share Posted December 19, 2005 I'm not sure of the differences, but I know that I've seen the "classic" kitchen aid (I think thats' what they call it) for around $160...what's the difference -- sounds like this one might have one more bell or whistle than that one? (incidently, Kohls is where I've seen it that low...lol -- been debating on should I get it or not...I really dont' use mixers that much, but maybe I'd end up a better mom if I had a decent mixer??!! ) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It's the difference in the quantity of flour they will handle at once. If you bake a lot of bread that extra half quart means you can do three loaves at one time instead of just two loaves. I'm just tired of being limited to only two loaves of bread at a time, so I'm ready for a bigger machine. But I'm holding out until I find a price I won't have to raid the grocery money for. meo, If you're "just beginning to get serious" about cooking, then the Classic as cheap as you can find it, even used or refurbished, would be fine. I had wanted one for a few years- and when we got married, the hubby told me to take some wedding money and go get one. I ended up getting it on SALE at Bed Bath and Beyond AND used the 20% coupon! I've learned that I shouldn't spend umpteen million dollars "in the event I ever need that extra loaf of bread" because I'm just *not* that person...I'd like to be someday, but until then, I need to live within my means....LOL! Some of the differences between the Classic and the Heavy Duty: More powerful motor, adjustable bowl vs. tilt head, narrow bowl vs. wide bowl. That's all I can really think of. I could have probably saved $20 or so by going with the Classic, but I consider this a once in a lifetime purchase (hopefully!) so I wanted to get the best one I could afford and possibly ever need. My friend is a big bread maker and uses the Artisan which, according to the people on the KitchenAid forums, is not quite as good as the one I got. I don't think, honestly, that I'd notice much difference at this point. I can say that it made a HUGE difference when making dough and I also liked it because it brought back memories of the kitchen with my mom and my grandma when I was little. They both had white and I think white is classic, so I got white. :) As I posted earlier, my grandma's is about 75 years old and still going strong, with pretty heavy use throughout its lifetime. What I really look forward to the most about this mixer is the memories it can help me make with my kids. I want to let them add the flour to the cookie dough just like I did when I was little. :) My friend with the Artisan has a black one and wants a quote to get flames painted on it, lol. She had decals on it but they're wearing off so I will be asking my good friend how much to paint it in his shop, lol. Now that's a domestic for you! My husbands company gave them a lunch with gifts given away one day but he didn't win anything much less the kitchenaid mixer he knew I wanted. He offered to buy the mixer from the man who won it but even tho he wasn't married, he didn't want to sell. About a yr later the guy askes hubby if he still wants the mixer. Long story short.....hubby pays him $100.00 for my dream mixer which had been opened but I don't even think used. I purchased the grinder from Kohls on sale, use it to grind my own ground beef, ground round etc. My daughter got hers from Kohls on sale also. meo Posted December 21, 2005 Share Posted December 21, 2005 I think I have a sunbeam, which is what my mom had for all those years (until someone gave her a kitchenaid!) -- I made the mistake of using it in england...on the "transformers" -- still not the same as 110v...probably 115 or *just* enough to kill the motor...as now it whirrs and then drops off and then whirrs again and then drops off...rrgh. One time a hunting buddy of his was sitting in my kitchen, and I showed off my new mixer. He said, "Is that an antique?" I laughed so hard! I guess the "bullet" look sort of does look like it's from the forties or fifties. It's a tank, though, and I use it constantly! You can't go wrong with a KitchenAid. If your a senior citizen, since its Wednesday I think you get 15% off of that as well. I could be wrong though, but if its true, $169.95-25.49-21.66=$122.80 which is a steal for this mixer. I was reading on the KitchenAid forums and a lot of the people who are cake bakers (professional) are just using the heavy duty one. I had asked my cousin and he said that unless you're making huge, heavy recipes (very heavy bread doughs in double and triple batches) then the one I got is perfectly fine. He cooks A LOT and wouldn't even need the Professional. I'm not kidding when I say my mom and grandma used theirs a lot. It was used several times a week and my grandma made homemade bread and all that. It still works. Sooo, unless you need the 6qt. bowl, I'd go with the 5qt. HOWEVER, Sam's, Costco, etc. have their own proprietary model and it's a 5qt bowl but has the power of the professional and also comes with the spiral dough hook, which can only be used on models that it originally comes with. This wasn't a big deal for me so I didn't go with the $249 model from Costco. It just wasn't worth the extra $90 for me. It's normally $269 but right now there's a $20 instant coupon.
