I don't know if those "instant rebates" are the same as the PayPal discount or not. You'll have to wait a few more hours to find out.

My dd 18 needs a camera and I am driving myself crazy trying to figure out which camera out of all that are on sale for bf is the best. I have one but I just point and click lol wish I knew more about them now. I'll keep comparing and I guess stop sleeping. I'll get it, I think. Thanks for posting this info.

My 17yo dd wants a "nice" camera for Christmas. We've been looking at the FujiFilm S1000fd at Amazon and New Egg. I'll have to look at Buy.com and see if I'll get a better deal there.

Have you looked at any sample photos from this camera? http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b399/Marcster2005/Smileypad/NO/bo40.gif

There's a terrible amount of ISO noise (fuzziness):

Look at the images at full size.

I had read about those problems but she wouldn't really listen until you shared this. What camera would you recommend? She is insistent that she wants at least 10x optical zoom and it can't be Kodak. (We both own Kodaks and they take terrible pictures.) I can't afford more than $200. Thanks for your help!

I was hoping you'd ask... I am in the market for an SLR-like camera as well... I share your loathing for Kodak (I have a Z740).

It's a little beyond your $200 price range, but if at all possible, pool your money and get a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28K or the DMC-FZ28S (black or silver versions of the same camera). I actually e-mailed a client about getting this camera when he asked for a recommendation. He just got it from jr.com and it just arrived yesterday. He is really impressed with it, but hasn't really had a chance to use it beyond a few random shots around the house.

Here is a modified version of the e-mail I sent him:

The Panasonic has 18x zoom, the ability to shoot RAW and Jpeg images, HD (720p) video recorder (1280 x 720p at 30fps = good enough to watch on TV), still photos can be shot in widescreen or standard format, access to many focus modes, including full manual, etc. This camera takes inexpensive SDHC cards.

If your daughter is thinking about "getting serious" about photography, this is definitely the camera to get.

Reviews of the Panasonic:

The best price I've found for the Panasonic DMC-FZ28K / DMC-FZ28S is at J&R ($269.99 plus about $6.95 for shipping):

http://www.jr.com/panasonic/pe/PAN_DMCFZ28K/ (black)

http://www.jr.com/panasonic/pe/PAN_DMCFZ28S/ (silver)

They have this camera at Newegg.com and Amazon.com, but for more money.

This sounds like a fabulous camera but I can't afford it. I have a very strict budget this year because our home flooded during Hurricane Ike. Our priority right now is finding a new home, hopefully by the first of the year. But I want to find her the camera of her dreams too. How are the lesser Panasonic models?

I've had a Panasonic Lumix camera for over a year now and I love it. It takes some amazing pictures. The only drawback I have with this is that it is a bit bulky (as in it really isn't one to just put in your pocket), but really the great pics make up for that.

Here is the one I have, however I did NOT pay the crazy price they have up now. I paid about $170, it should be cheaper than that now since it was released over a year ago now. http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMC-LZ7K-Digital-Camera-Stabilized/dp/B000MW7B0I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1227703144&sr=8-1

I couldn't find the same model on Buy.com - so no link, but they do have other Panasonic Lumix DMC cameras.

I just saw that Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28S camera at the website below:

86photovideo

for $189 with $9.99 shipping. I've never ordered from this website but it looks nice.:)

(sorry it wouldn't let me post the actual web link because I am new:( )

Just putting together a nice website doesn't mean they are a good reseller. ;)

The predecessor to that camera is the DMC-FZ18, but you'll only find that on ebay. It's is only 8MP. The used DMC-FZ18 that I saw on eBay was bidding up to $250. It's something you could keep an eye on if used is an option for you: http://photography.shop.ebay.com/items/Digital-Cameras__dmc-fz18_W0QQ_nkwZdmcQ2dfz18QQ_catrefZ1QQ_flnZ1QQ_sacatZ31388QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em282?_trksid=p3286.c0.m282

There aren't tons and tons of "SLR-Like" cameras in the $200 range, and the other Fuji cameras in that class (SD2000HD and S8000fd) suffer from the same photo quality issues.

Another camera I would recommend (this one is under $200): The Panasonic DMC-TZ4, but it's a compact camera, not a "SLR-Like" camera. That does make it more pocketable though. The DMC-TZ4 is auto-focus only -- there is no manual focus option that your daughter may be looking for.

It also has a 10x zoom lens with an 8MP sensor. The otherwise similar DMC-TZ5 steps up to a 10.1 MP sensor (larger prints).

"Bottom Line - Panasonic has put together a winning combination of portability and versatility with the Lumix DMC-TZ4 "Super-zoom". With an 8-megapixel imaging sensor, 10x Leica optical zoom lens (with MEGA O.I.S.), compact and durable body as well as one of the smartest, easiest to use auto shooting modes available (iA mode), the Panasonic TZ4 is a great camera. Whether it be for someone that likes to travel or one who needs the versatility of a much more expensive camera in a compact package. All this combined with class average performance, great image quality and ease-of-use make the DMC-TZ4 a steal with a price of US$300 or less. "

Another thought -- maybe I'm crazy, but:

Had you thought about a manual print camera for your daughter? My manual camera is a Minolta X-700. You can buy them with 35mm lens (used, of course) on ebay for $49.99. You could get her a few lenses and some print film (stocking stuffers) and be under your $200 price range.

Prices have really fallen for manual print cameras -- I probably have $1500 wrapped up in my manual setup (I have 5 lenses), but it might only be worth $300-$400 these days.

Reviews of the X-700: http://www.photographyreview.com/mfr/konica-minolta/35mm/PRD_84484_3105crx.aspx

A true manual-focus camera, able to take slides, print film in color or black and white, etc. All manual camera and gear are cheap right now -- she might like it -- it's "old school".

While she will lose the instant gratification of the LCD screen and being able to instantly drop the images off of the memory card, all photo places can publish prints from a print camera to a CD and/or online.

The other benefit? - her photos will actually get printed. Since I use my digital camera more (for convenience) I have virtually no prints.

The last time I seriously used my print camera is on vacations, where I think nothing of shooting a 24-shot roll per day...

Another nice thing is that 35mm cameras are capable of creating 18 x 24 poster size prints with relatively low noise - as you can see from the maximum print chart, the 35mm is still king in large prints (scroll down the page):

http://www.design215.com/toolbox/megapixels.php

So a 35mm print camera can make nice prints at 50% larger than a 10MP camera.

The only current digital camera that I know of that is superior to a 35mm print camera is a 21MP Canon... Yours for $7,500 as a body-only, no lens included.

So basically the Kodak I (re)posted here is junk?

My Kodak Z740 takes horrible macro setting photos and at 3 years old, the macro setting just gave out altogehter (it refuses to focus in macro setting).

You can't go wrong with the Canon Elph line. They offer plenty of cameras under 200.00, I have owned Canons for years and they have been great.

mrseddie's daughter seems to be after an dSLR or SLR-like camera, not a point and shoot.

I read a review of the Westinghouse, and it was horrible. Scared me away from buying it.
