Brad Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 vBulletin (the forum software we use here on GD) just yesterday posted about many new features that will be in the next version of vBulletin (3.7) due sometime soon. Lots of new interesting features for both users and mods/admins. Take a look: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=249460 and let us know which of the new features you like best and would like to see implemented here when the new version comes out :)
reynog Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 Hi Brad... I think that thread tagging and admin-defined prefixes would be great additions and make finding what you need easier.
lennon2004 Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 I think Thread Prefixes sounds helpful, and I bet User Picture Gallieries would be used a lot, but I don't know how many resources that would take, and Member Customization of Profile Page sounds fun too. :)
Brad Posted November 25, 2007 Author Posted November 25, 2007 It looks like they are trying to turn you (currently simple) profile pages into myspace-type pages with "friends", comments, customization, etc... If we decided to implement that we could scrap the member pages as this would be much more integrated. And as for server resources, during 10 months of the year it won't be a problem, and if it ends up being one for the other 2 we can always temporarily turn them off. But I don't see them being much of an issue that way. Personally I like the new spam management. Delete all the posts from a spammer and ban them all from one screen
freesia39 Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 i like thread tagging and the image viewing lightbox for attached images.
lennon2004 Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 Personally I like the new spam management. Delete all the posts from a spammer and ban them all from one screen Yeah, I bet you do..but that's no fun for the rest of us, especially if we mess up.
Marcster Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 Personally I like the new spam management. Delete all the posts from a spammer and ban them all from one screen http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b399/Marcster2005/Smileypad/Yes/gdyeahthat.gif
mmm40 Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 I like the idea of tags and admin-defined prefixes. Implementing both seems as if it would be redundant. I think tags would be the practical way to go. It certainly would make searching much simpler. Especially, when looking for a deal on a specific item.
Rockfordmom Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 spam management tags and maybe navbar notices for number of posts inline moderation authentication ??? reciprocal friendships - too much like myspace
Marcster Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 reciprocal friendships - too much like myspaceYou don't wanna be my friend? http://www.millan.net/minimations/smileys/tantrumsmiley.gif
hannahs_momma Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 Ok I have never commented on your smilies Marcster but I loveeeeeee that one lol
Brad Posted November 25, 2007 Author Posted November 25, 2007 I like the idea of tags and admin-defined prefixes. Implementing both seems as if it would be redundant. I think tags would be the practical way to go. It certainly would make searching much simpler. Especially, when looking for a deal on a specific item. The only issue with tags is the people starting the threads have to use them. We already have people posting deals with the subject "jc penney" and nothing else. i doubt they will also be adding tags. Although maybe I can get some volunteers to tag at least the deal threads (in exchange for a GC or something) I think the prefixes might be useful in some forums like sweepstakes - we could have the daily entries, the 1x entries, etc... we have the 1X icon for those now, but prefixes would be better and would easily be sorted then.
mysticmage Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 On a forum I go to, it uses IPB and they have user pages almost just like that. Most comments are simply spam and nothing really important therefore I believe that comments should be disabled. Other then that I do really like all of the new things.
Kandy Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 spam management - get rid of the spammer and all their post at once (sounds great, as there are some that post the same thing in all the threads) tags - to locate certain threads/deals Picture Gallerie- prefixes - would be good for sweeps/coupons/freebies.
Scott Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 Personally I like the new spam management. Delete all the posts from a spammer and ban them all from one screen Yeah to that! It can be tedious to delete the multiple posts of a spammer
outnumbered Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 I like the admin-defined prefixes and the picture galleries best. I like the idea of tagging threads, but I can't see it working well here. I can see people tagging threads using four or five different spellings/abbreviations of the same word, which would defeat the whole purpose. If you could set tags and then people could use them, that'd be one thing, but letting 150,000+ people all create their own tags--I just can't see that working out well. The prefixes, though, would be helpful and ought to work.
acis516 Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 I don't think I saw it there, but I think that a chat room would be a nice feature both public and private.
cotejb Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 I like the prefixes, don't really like the tagging...I think it would be more trouble than help. Some of the features do seem "myspacy" and I'm not sure if that's the direction the site wants to go.
Marcster Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 Ok I have never commented on your smilies Marcster but I loveeeeeee that one lolhttp://www.millan.net/minimations/smileys/awwsmiley.gif Glad you like it... It's a new one from my millan.net subscription.
DramaQueenLucy Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 I like the tags but don't like the reciprocal friendships..too myspace
Carazariah Posted November 26, 2007 Posted November 26, 2007 Definitely use the thread tags, that's very in with blogs and in other places and it seems very user friendly. It sounds like the new SPAM features are a shoe-in to be added. . . :) Also I like the friends idea and integrated user pages. . . sounds like some good things coming! :) C
alimfp Posted November 27, 2007 Posted November 27, 2007 Thread tags! LOVE those. I do like the picture galleries, BUT I wonder how much load that put on the server? Would the pictures be hosted here? If not too much of a load, then I guess I'm good with that. Especially if people posted pictures of deals they've received, lol. :) I dislike the friends thing. :/ The prefixes aren't hot on my list either.
ang625 Posted November 29, 2007 Posted November 29, 2007 i agree with the PPs about the 'myspace type thing'...not a big fan of that. i also like the thread tags.
nirvana4all Posted November 30, 2007 Posted November 30, 2007 1.making groups (tech, parents of 2 yr olds, floridians, etc) to auto direct them to deals you know they are looking for, etc, 2.picture gallery-might take up a lot of server space though I would guess so dont wanna kill the board, and 3.Hooks to allow attachments to be passed through a virus scanner, gotta love more safety.
Brad Posted November 30, 2007 Author Posted November 30, 2007 Some notes: 1. Very few, if any, of the new features will have any effect on server performance. 2. As for the customizable user profile pages, if we allow those, there will be an option to view everyone's profiles without customizations if you just want to view them with the standard layout. 3. Thread title prefixes will likely only be used for a few forums (contests, etc...) 4. Thread tags would likely only be used for the deal forums. 5. The new groups could possibly be useful for things like the coupon trains, etc... but we'll have to see about that.
jeninpa Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 I like new, different and up-to-date so I want it all....atleast the ones I understand, lmao. The photo album thingy of course caught my eye. I'm also always available to lend a hand w/anything too. Being a SAHM w/cable internet, I'm always on here, lmao.
hwolf6330 Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 I am confused on the spam management. I'm thinking that is only for the mods. So I think there should be some kind of "button" to push to alert the mods of spam.
Brad Posted December 5, 2007 Author Posted December 5, 2007 I am confused on the spam management. I'm thinking that is only for the mods. So I think there should be some kind of "button" to push to alert the mods of spam. That is just for mods. You can (and always have been able to) alert mods to spam by clicking the red X circle icon to the left of every post.
