possible new forum features?

vBulletin (the forum software we use here on GD) just yesterday posted about many new features that will be in the next version of vBulletin (3.7) due sometime soon. Lots of new interesting features for both users and mods/admins.

I think that thread tagging and admin-defined prefixes would be great additions and make finding what you need easier.

I think Thread Prefixes sounds helpful, and I bet User Picture Gallieries would be used a lot, but I don't know how many resources that would take, and Member Customization of Profile Page sounds fun too. :)

It looks like they are trying to turn you (currently simple) profile pages into myspace-type pages with "friends", comments, customization, etc...

 

If we decided to implement that we could scrap the member pages as this would be much more integrated.

 

And as for server resources, during 10 months of the year it won't be a problem, and if it ends up being one for the other 2 we can always temporarily turn them off. But I don't see them being much of an issue that way.

The only issue with tags is the people starting the threads have to use them.

 

We already have people posting deals with the subject "jc penney" and nothing else. i doubt they will also be adding tags.

 

Although maybe I can get some volunteers to tag at least the deal threads (in exchange for a GC or something)

 

I think the prefixes might be useful in some forums like sweepstakes - we could have the daily entries, the 1x entries, etc... we have the 1X icon for those now, but prefixes would be better and would easily be sorted then.

On a forum I go to, it uses IPB and they have user pages almost just like that. Most comments are simply spam and nothing really important therefore I believe that comments should be disabled. Other then that I do really like all of the new things.

I like the admin-defined prefixes and the picture galleries best. I like the idea of tagging threads, but I can't see it working well here. I can see people tagging threads using four or five different spellings/abbreviations of the same word, which would defeat the whole purpose. If you could set tags and then people could use them, that'd be one thing, but letting 150,000+ people all create their own tags--I just can't see that working out well. The prefixes, though, would be helpful and ought to work.

I like the prefixes, don't really like the tagging...I think it would be more trouble than help. Some of the features do seem "myspacy" and I'm not sure if that's the direction the site wants to go.

Definitely use the thread tags, that's very in with blogs and in other places and it seems very user friendly. It sounds like the new SPAM features are a shoe-in to be added. . . :)

 

Also I like the friends idea and integrated user pages. . . sounds like some good things coming!

I do like the picture galleries, BUT I wonder how much load that put on the server? Would the pictures be hosted here? If not too much of a load, then I guess I'm good with that. Especially if people posted pictures of deals they've received, lol. :)

 

I dislike the friends thing. :/ The prefixes aren't hot on my list either.

1.making groups (tech, parents of 2 yr olds, floridians, etc) to auto direct them to deals you know they are looking for, etc, 2.picture gallery-might take up a lot of server space though I would guess so dont wanna kill the board, and 3.Hooks to allow attachments to be passed through a virus scanner, gotta love more safety.

Some notes:

 

1. Very few, if any, of the new features will have any effect on server performance.

 

2. As for the customizable user profile pages, if we allow those, there will be an option to view everyone's profiles without customizations if you just want to view them with the standard layout.

 

3. Thread title prefixes will likely only be used for a few forums (contests, etc...)

 

4. Thread tags would likely only be used for the deal forums.

 

5. The new groups could possibly be useful for things like the coupon trains, etc... but we'll have to see about that.

That is just for mods.

 

You can (and always have been able to) alert mods to spam by clicking the red X circle icon to the left of every post.
