lisamag
i've bought stuff that was refurbished before and i never had a problem, i guess it's more of how you feel about it and how your mom feels. each person is different. if it doesn't bother you or your mom, i don't see the problem with it. some people think that gifts should always be brand new and others perfere to save the money as best as they can. what do you think about giving a refurbished GPS? how would you feel if it was you getting the gift? would it bother you or are you ok with it? if you check around you can find some good deals on new ones, have you checked out overstock.com? they have good prices. Which of course I am when I can be I cant afford not to be. I am sure she would be ok with it but I just feel like I am giving her hand-me-downs if that makes any sense! How would you feel receiving a refrubed gift? Would you be offended?

How would you feel receiving a refrubed gift? Would you be offended? When I was much younger, a refurb or last year's model might have bothered me... but now (shhh I am 62) if it is something I want, and my son or daughter can find it less expensive as a refurb then... woohoo for them. It would mean just as much to me.. infact I would probably feel better about it because they didnt have to spend so much money on it. Go for it... it truly is the thought that counts!!!! AndreaInNC
If it comes with a warranty I don't see the difference personally. If it's an "as is" item, I'd say no.

t_mulkey
Check out the GPS in the automotive dept of Wal-Mart. We took a family vacation to California this summer. We live in Florida. I didn't want to spend too much on GPS, so an associate at Wal-Mart showed me the GPS in automotive it was $149.xx It was the best investment I have ever made. We call it "Sally". "Sally" took was from Texas to the Grand Canyon then to Hoover Dam then on to Vegas without any problems On each of these stops, we just looked up the attraction name and selected it. After leaving Vegas, "Sally" got us safely through all of our destination in California. She took us to the gates of Disney and Universal Studios. She was easy to program and told us of exits and turn in plenty of time. She also had our speed on the bottom of the display. She calculated the arrival time and drive time. The Electronics department had the Tom-Toms and others. The this one in the electronics was alot cheaper and easy to work.

I am still on the fence about giving refrubed as gifts, as for me I am fine with receiving a refrubed gift, but can't shake the feeling of being thought of as cheap if I give one. But if I can find a nice (has to be easy to use) GSP for my mom for Christmas for $149.00 I think that is the way I will go. We all know how pricey GSP can be and I just can't afford that this year. I don't know who would be reputable and who wouldn't! ThanksI ordered a refurb digital camera from Adorama through Amazon for my 8yo stepson. I got such a great deal on it that when he drops it (as he is sure to do), it won't be such a tragedy. Not to mention...he'll never know that it's a refurb. Fishboysmom
What about giving a gift where you need to cut off the upc for a rebate? Do you think that's tacky? Sorry to threadjack.

Sorry to threadjack.Oh wow I don't know, I have never thought about that. I mean you're opening your present and see the upc code is gone, I think I would have to laugh. Can you return an item without it? I don't know so much if that is tacky but it sure would make for a good laugh! Hmmm interesting I don't know if I would, I guess it would depend on how well I knew the person I was giving the gift too. Intersting to see what others think and has anyone every gotten a gift they knew was refrubed or had a missing ups code?
nirvana4all
Got to tell ya that if I had to cut out the upc and it was someone who would not be worried about it, I would leave it that way. If it was someone who would worry, I would take it out of the original package and pack it up "pretty" and give it to them that way.
guilliam
We bought our son a new lcd monitor a couple years ago and I cut the upc out of the box on it. He just laughed and said guess mom needed it for a rebate huh? The only downside I see is if it doesn't work, you can't return it. (we made sure it worked before cutting it out)
abentley
I took the plunge and ordered my daughter a camera from kodak(refurb), and thought i could send it back if I didn't like the looks of it. I saved about $50, and it is early enough to send it back, if I need to!!!
sm1kla
I think it all depends on who you are giving the gift to. I would be able to give a refurb to one of my sisters or my parents, would probably even put a corney personalized comment with it, like with "the money I saved on this gift I bought myself another pair of shoes, you can borrow them someday". Thanks for everyone advice!!!!!!!!I think the brand is Stylus or something like that. I purchased one in the electronics department also. It was in a locked display case with the car radios, radar detectors, etc. It was around the same price. I would definately recommend it also. I know the brand started with an S. I will let you know if I am wrong tomorrow when I am back out in the car.

Shortness
I would love to find a refurbed GPS system. I'm currently looking for a good deal for my dh, but I'm not sure which are most reputable--right now, just going by reviews I seen on store sites. I don't mind at all if it's refurbed. Like someone else said, if somebody can save money when buying for me, I feel great, as I don't like a lot of $ spent on me. My laptop I'm on here is refurbed, as well as our fax/coper/printer. We're going on over 2 years now.
