Kohl's Black Friday ads through the years

Was going through my archive of Black Friday ads recently (I have a stack around 16" tall from the last 11 years) and thought it was interesting to see how Kohl's has changed (or not changed) their ads since 2006.

- The number of early bird specials went from over 250, to 300, to 400 and to over 500.

- Kohl's Cash went from $10 to $15 in 2011.

- Opening times went from Friday 5am to 4am to 3am, to midnight Thursday, to 8pm, to 6pm.

- Front page deals are pretty consistent: 50% off toys, a few jewelry deals and a couple electronics items.

I'll try to do a few more of these for other stores throughout the next month if there is interest.

Love this! The 50% off toys is basically why I go there. It's also interesting that they started Thanksgiving night in 2013. I remember sneaking out of the house after I put my son to sleep that year. He was only 5 months old on Thanksgiving. Feels like a lifetime ago!

They are one of my favorite stores to shop . I probably spend more money there than anywhere, but only after I make sure the sales and Kohls cash are making their deals better than other stores.

I liked it better when the discount could be used on everything.

I can honestly say that I have only made 1 or 2 purchases in store at Kohls. The store just causes me anxiety to shop in and check out. Not even including high peak shopping times like Black Friday. I make several orders online, but just cannot handle the store!

Gosh, I remember looking through nearly every one of these ads.  I've only dared to go to the actual store on Friday once, when that was THE day and have not done it again.  I can't handle the lines wrapping around the entire store for checkout.  LOL.  But I do love me some Kohl's online shopping, especially now that their sale starts early in the week online.  The last few years I've spent more overall at Kohl's than anywhere during Black Friday.

Love this!

I'd be curious to see if we can find the same item (maybe not necessarily at Kohl's) for many consecutive years and see how the price has (or hasn't) changed!

Actually at Target every year they usually have some Nikon wannabe bridge camera for 99.95.

Some that I remember from typing up the ads all these years: Toys R Us almost always has the Fisher-Price Doctor's Kit and Sears for the longest time always had the Craftsman clock made to look like a circular saw blade.

Brad, do you actually save the paper ads from year to year?

Yep, started doing it back in 2006. Really wish I had some earlier than that, but we have a couple years before that in digital form on http://www.blackfridayarchive.com

I keep telling myself I'm going to scan all my older ones so we have cleaner copies on the archive site, but the stack of ads I have is very imposing and the thought of scanning every . single . page in all those ads scares me away.

The ads I have are from the local paper, so I'm missing some stores that we didn't have around here back then as well, but I've got all the big ones (Walmart, Target, Kohl's, Best Buy, Toys R Us, Sears, JCPenney, Kmart, etc) from every single year.

Yikes!  Hope you have a big filing cabinet and a big basement!!

Amazingly they all fit in a single Rubbermaid storage bin. I got rid of the actual newspaper sections so it's just one heavy 50lb+ bin of ads. Enough space for this year and then it'll be on to bin #2 :P
