Personally, I have been predicting lackluster sales.  For starters, there is nothing new out there.  Retailers are counting on drones and 4k televisions to buoy sales, but I think they are wrong on both counts.  I don't know anyone who wants or wants to give a drone.  (Brad, do we need a dedicated drone discussion?)  While I think people who are looking for televisions will get 4k sets, I can't imagine anyone replacing a 1080p or even a 720p set with a 4k set.  So you are limited to people looking to add a set and we have all bought a LOT of televisions over the last decade.

Here are some recent quotes on [anticipated] drone sales...

  • As many as one million drones could be sold during this year’s holiday season, FAA official Rich Swayze has told ATW Online.
  • The market for commercial/civilian drones will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19% between 2015 and 2020, compared with 5% growth on the military side.
  • Roughly 700,000 drones are expected to ship in the United States in 2015, a 63 percent increase from the previous year, according to the Consumer Electronics Association. About 7 percent of consumers surveyed plan to purchase a drone as a gift this year, a "pretty significant" portion, said Steve Koenig, director of industry analysis at the CEA.
  • With prices now below $100, wildly varying estimates predict Americans will buy hundreds of thousands – maybe more than a million – drones for Christmas

I do not know a single person who bought a drone.  I do not know a single person who is shopping for one.  Searching this forum for 'drone' yielded only a couple posts -- only one in the 'what i got' thread.

I would love to hear from people who actually bought a drone or are actively shopping for one.  If you bought one, post a link to the drone you bought and tell us who you bought it for, why you bought it, where you bought it, and how much you paid.

I bought 2 drones, but they weren't the super expensive ones.  I bought 1 at Belk by Sharper Image for $49.99 and then 1 from a guy in the middle of the mall selling them.  He was flying it in the mall and I figured it would be good one for DH to play with.  He's like a kid himself and likes to get a "toy" for Christmas too.  It was on sale for $59.99 but I talked him down to $55 (after taxes). LOL!  I hope the one from Belk is a decent one. I bought it for my DS.

The drone deals we posted on the main site didn't do that well. The cheaper ones did better but overall they didn't seem to be that in-demand.

I want to get the Air Hogs Millennium Falcon (I guess it could be classified as a drone). I want it for nothing more than being a Star Wars nut and for the novelty. I won't pay current prices though. I'll get one eventually on clearance.

Friend of ours bought one for his son, I'm not sure what he paid and he got it from a local hobby shop as a kit.

HAHA!

I totally bought this when TRU put it on sale for a while on Saturday for my 13 year old son, but I promise you I'll be logging some time on it.

I'll let you know how it is.  The reviews I've watched have been favorable for indoor flight at least.

I bought the one that Kohls had for $49.99 for DH to play with. We'll see if I wasted money or not...

I am actively shopping for one.  DH wants one.  I am trying to find one that won't break the bank but that has decent flying time outdoors.  I saw one that holds a Go Pro which I have so am thinking I might go that route.

It was marked *all the way* down to $99 (from what, $109 I think?)  :)

Yea, I'm a sucker.  But it looks fun.  And it lights up.  And reportedly has a working hyperspace drive.

Any good recommendations for drones that are around $50?

Only person I've seen in my daily life is a friend looking for one for her 9 year old son. No one else I know has purchased one or was even looking at buying one.

Brad has one on the front page that is today's deal on Amazon it is a Syma.  I was looking at it and the reviews.  Some reviews suggest a Hubsan for better quality.  Both are around $50.  So, I came in here to see if anybody suggested a brand.

I bought one (that you have to build) on Ebay a few days ago. My husband is an aerospace engineer though and loves anything to do with flying. He built one a couple years ago and wants a smaller one to put together. We have a couple of the very tiny ones (smaller than your hand) that he flies inside occasionally, but we've never had a pre-built drone yet...party because the really nice ones are so expensive.

I did quite a bit of research and one drone kept popping up for beginner outdoor use. Syma X5C-1
