People are NUTS WM laptops

Um . . . not to be a tech dweeb, but have you guys actually sat down and benchmarked the systems against each other? (FTR, I have.)

Generally, AMD chips -- even cheapo Semprons -- meet or exceed the Intel chips in their same price point.

That's why Intel has to load 1Mb of cache onto a low-end processor while AMD can get away with 256 kb cache.

If the AMD had 1Mb on die, I guarantee it would blow the Intel so far out of the water it wouldn't be funny.

Also, the AMD chips have PowerNow, which is an incredibly handy feature and milks a lot more battery life out of a small battery.

I don't know too many techies who would take an Intel over an AMD.

I personally would not buy a laptop with a celeron processor. I love AMD and the thing that get me is that no one seems to understand that with a laptop you cannot upgrade the video card. The wm laptop and most of the ones with amd processors have the radeon motherboard with built in ati graphics. Most (not all) celeron and pentium laptops have intel graphics, they wont even run the sims and visual effects in media player even tax them. I am also sure that you have heard of Windows Vista, it is coming next year, a laptop with the ATI graphics is already vista ready, the intel graphics of most intel systems, including all the Dell's I have seen are not fully Vista ready and will only barely run it. I have been shopping for a laptop for the past 6 months, I was waiting for the Emachine laptop that Wal-Mart just got but when I saw the bf HP laptop at wm I got that. You get what you pay for........ I just wished that everyone on here understood how important video is in a laptop because it is not upgradeable. Yea I am a techie......if someone can find a Dell with a decent video subsystem not the intel crap for a decent price let me know...... I don't care if it is Toshiba, Dell, IBM, or HP a laptop has to have a good foundation to start with and amd/ati are a good foundation. Just keep pushing the cheap dells and toshibas with the inferior graphics and when you decide to play something like the sims and it is a slide show you will wished you had done your research.

The Celeron M is a good chip ;) They are identical to the Pentium M except for the l2 cache and stepping :D So no downing the Celeron M. :greenappl

edit: As far as integrated graphics and such: Vista will run fine, but the "pretty stuff" will just have to be toned down. No big deal there.

I don't agree. The AMD chips may have better peformance for gaming, but not everyday use.

I love when people say this. You go ahead and compare some chips...tell me if you actually notice a difference ;) Do not go look at tests, ect.....You wouldn't be able to. Price for price, AMD cannot be beat :D

Ummm, the BF Toshiba's at BB and CC have the radeon chipset too with the same graphics card as the HP, so there goes that argument.

I still love my HP lappy from walmart well worth getting there at 1:30 Am to be in line to get one, Nothing is a better feeling then getting everything you went to the stores for and then being home by 12:30 and even stopping half way through to have breakfest. The thrill of Black Friday and the thrill of telling all the late comers to head to the end of the line, Which was long.

I agree. And the WM laptop was for my mom who basically only uses her computer to check and send e-mail. She can't afford paying alot of money for one, she won't be using it as much as I would, and we don't have many stores around here. So, the WM laptop was a great thing for her. And I am so glad to have been able to stand there for 11 hours to get it for her.:lolrun:

Why not if you have the money? :tongue1:

if you have the money, you wont be buying one of the black friday laptops... thats what im talking about, not the 2000+ dollar laptops that can run games well.

You are correct but I would never pay $2,000 for a laptop.

The $900 - $1200 range offers just the right balance of performance, features and price.

That's really ignorant... I'm a student, I want a laptop I can throw in my backpack, I want a laptop I can carry around without having to ask for Campus Security to escort from the campus library to my dorm in downtown Chicago, I want a laptop that is suitable for web browsing and word processing, I'd say a 400 dollar notebook fits the bill perfectly.

We're more than pleased with our CC Toshiba laptop.....upgraded the RAM to 1GB already ($40), now running in dual-channel mode. The ATI graphics is taking 128MB out of the system RAM, but this still leaves 872MB RAM for Windows...more than enough for us.

We checked ut the Sempron vs. Celeron processor lappys and really couldn't tell the difference between both running the software we're going to be using the laptop for....Excel spreadsheets, Word, internet, etc. Even watching DVDs on both variants of machines was essentially the same.....so saw no problem with having a Celeron processor in the laptop. (All 3 of my home ocmputers are Athlon 64 processor machines, so I do have a "bent" towards AMD right now...)

As a side benefit, when we signed up with the AOHell plan (for teh $150 discount), we were initially signed up in the $23.90 dial-up plan. Called the CC we purchased the laptop from, talked with the manager and he told me all I had to do was call the 1-800 number at AOL and change the plan. Seemed simple enough.....and was even better. When I was on the phone with the CS rep, I mentioned I had really wanted the broadplan they advertise....the "Bring Your Own Broadband Plan," and she said "No problem!" and changed us over to it....for $10/mo.

So our total cost for the laptop, $231 after tax in the store, plus $120 in AOL fees, comes to $351....a nice price.

Very nice indeed! Glad that worked out for you.

The HP laptops are selling for more on ebay then the toshibas from best buy... for me, I would rather have a longer battery life and efficiency in my laptop then speed... I'm so glad I ended up at the nice, warm super wal mart with their bathrooms and food to buy and eat while waiting to get the HP.. I love this thing... it does everything I need for the price, and really has a nice look to it as well... black in the inside, a nice grey on the outside... to me the toshiba was ugly looking. I like the full year warrenty on the HP as well. I'm sure they were both fine laptops though. It's dell that I've always been more skeptical with.

My favorite games are old NES, SNES, N64, and PS1 roms, so I'm in heaven really with this lappy.
