Josher5513 Posted November 26, 2005 Posted November 26, 2005 My CC laptop is having some screen issues, so I'm returning it tomorrow morning. I realised I was going to be screwed with the 1 year AOL contract either way, but thought I'd call and try to get out of it anyway. I called their 800 number, simply told the lady I was returning my laptop, and asked if there was any way I could get out of the contract too, without paying the 12 months of service. She put me on hold for a second, then came back and said "Not a problem, sir. I just need some information about your account" I gave her the info, and she cancelled the contract without any penalties. I'm not sure why she did this, or if they'll do it for just anyone, but I was extremely happy about it. The manager at the CC I bought it from is offering me a new laptop (it's the $199 Toshiba), but as of now I'm not wanting it. I thought maybe one of you GottaDeal'ers who missed out would like it? All I'm asking is what I paid for it. ($234) $449.99 +$ 34.20 tax -$250.00 AOL Rebate =$234.19 PM me if you're interested.
Flanster Posted November 26, 2005 Posted November 26, 2005 Josher, I strongly suggest you check your credit card statement constantly for the next few months to insure that you don't get hit for the AOL fees anyway. AOL has a very long and sordid track record of "accidentally forgetting" to follow through on account cancellation requests.

Josher5513 Posted November 26, 2005 Author Posted November 26, 2005 Josher, I strongly suggest you check your credit card statement constantly for the next few months to insure that you don't get hit for the AOL fees anyway. AOL has a very long and sordid track record of "accidentally forgetting" to follow through on account cancellation requests. They gave me a confirmation number, but you're probably right. In the past, It's taken me 3 phone calls and some major yelling to get them to actually cancel an account. Thanks, Flanster.. I just got a call from the Manager of CC. He said he's having the laptop shipped from a store in Minnesota, and it should be here mid-week. Wow, I've gotten alot more responses than I was expecting. I'm not sure how I'm going to decide who to sell the laptop to? lol:cry2:
Just_Jill Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 Sorry Jill but I pm'd him almost 25 minutes ago and I still have had no response. Who ever pm'd first should get the lappy!

ebony0421 Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 That was really nice of the lady to cancel your contract for you.
deronkershaw Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 I have two boys going to college in the fall...isn't that a sad story??? LOLHaha, I'm IN college and my friend and I were going to share one. I think you beat me... but I'm sure someone will have some ridiculous story to beat us all

Josher5513 Posted November 27, 2005 Author Posted November 27, 2005 Okay, I checked my inbox, and two of you tied for 1st, and most of the other inquiries were sent within 5 minutes of the first two. Would everyone be alright with me drawing a name out of a hat? lol Update: The laptop is coming from Michigan, not Minnesota, sorry. And he said they're going to boot it up and run tests on it in store, before I leave this time, so the box seal will be broken just so you know. It will be the new one, and not the one with the broken screen. Also, I just got off the phone with my mom, and she is willing to part with her unopened WalMart BF laptop as well. She is asking $450 (She paid $440 for it w/ tax) + S&H. You can PM me with inquieries for that LT as well. That one will be first come first serve.
decafmom Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 That's fine with me as long as I was one of the first two and mine is the name you draw. LOL I guess I should ask details though about how you want payment, shipping, etc.

Yep the two that tied should be the only ones in the hat .For the record, my PM was at, 5:43.
missyjane Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 For the record mine was at 6:32. Two minutes after he started the thread.
Josher5513 Posted November 27, 2005 Author Posted November 27, 2005 Okay. I put your names in a Fossil Watch tin can thing, and I pulled out Deronkershaw. Randomly pulling a name was the most fair way I could think of. You all Pm'd me so close together, and alot of your messages showed up at the same time. Sorry if this makes anyone mad, but it's the only thing I could think of doing. If everlast316 decides they don't want the WM laptop, then whoever PM's me first will get that one, assuming there are no more ties.

alimfp Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 Just curious, why did you get the laptop in the first place if you don't even want it? I know it doesn't work, you are getting a new one, but why not keep the new one? I am guessing you stood out in line for quite some time to get the initial one, so why did you change your mind? Again, curious.. I agree with a previous poster, watch your CC like a hawk - AOL always cancels easily, but they don't usually CANCEL the charges going to your CC quite so easily.

Again, curious..I had planned on giving it as a gift for someone. Then I found out on BF that someone else had already bought a Laptop for them, so I thought I would keep it for myself. Then when I opened it up, the screen wasn't working properly, so I was going to return it and just get my money back because I have no real need for a laptop, until the manager said he could get me another one, so I thought I would offer it to GD members.
Mikser Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 I hope this is not a scam. 2 BF laptops for sale for face value that someone would have went through a lot to buy and are currently selling on Ebay for a lot more than BF price. I realize this could be legit but sounds too good to be true.
RossMAN Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 1) I hope you signed up for AOL using a credit card and not a debit card. 2) You did write down the AOL CSR's name and extension/badge ID number, right?

Though if I was still stuck paying for a year of AOL, it might be a different story lol.
alimfp Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 Ditto RossMAN. Maybe it'd help your buyer(s) to feel more comfortable if you provided an eBay ID you use or your Paypal address so they can see what your rating is there (well, the number of good transactions). Just an idea. :)
