I remember about 3 years ago I was @ Walmart and their credit card machine went down. Luckily I don't use them...but there was a lot of mad people.

They should have the manual CC machine.

They should have the manual CC machine.

I am sure they did. I did not wait around to find out how they handled it. I was using cash and moved up 2 spaces. Still I have had to use manual authorization...and on BF I bet it's a pain to do it.

I meant more in the question of how do they hadle the redistribution of that item?

Even if it is on hold for awhile when they let it go, who gets it?

That would probably cause a serious fight in the store!

I use my debit card, knowing me. I would lose the cash. And it's much safer for me. :)

I am always afraid of losing my money. But I am more afraid of me w/ CC's. When you have 24 at one time...you know you've gone overboard. Hi, my name's Evon and I am a compulsive shopper...who can't control her credit card spending!!!

The might try their best, since that poor person went to all that trouble to get in line. But when it all comes down to it, if ya cant pay for it ya don't get it.

I wouldn't have much sympathy for someone like that. Before you go to all that trouble to be the first few people in line, it only takes Common Sense 101 to make sure you can pay for the thing first.

Most stores have a way to manually run the cards when the machine's go down. Of course, the systems do get overloaded that morning and it could happen that they couldn't run anything. In that case I'd say bring a checkbook as back-up. In most cases, I would think even w/o their check scans they'd take a check if all their CC machines were down.

Now, I'm more concerned about DH's direct deposit not being their on Friday morning because of the holiday. His work put out a memo and said it will be there- so we'll see.

Bright side- mom told me she's got me covered if it for some reason wasn't there. She can tide me over until that Monday.

I had this happen. Best Buy wouldn't accept my credit card payment even though I had over $2000 worth of credit available. I ended up having to put back about $200 worth of items and use another credit card.

I ended up calling the credit card verification company that Best Buy uses and they said I was randomly selected for "fraud protection" (or some BS like that). They said "by no fault of your own, your purchase was red flagged as a possible fraud attempt." I was pissed. By no fault of my own, I had to put back $200 worth of merchandise.

It's not just those who's credit card or checks were declined. Having worked at BB for 5 years, there normally ends up being a few of the ticketed items that never get claimed. Perhaps they decided on a different model or didn't want to wait in the lines. For those we'd hold them until the doorbuster cutoff time then one of the next customers would be the lucky winner and get it. Really no system for who would get it, just luck of the draw once the clock strikes noon.

I think that stores have a backup plan for when the registers or credit card lines go down, or at least I hope they do. I will be using cash and my credit cards only come out as a last resort. I don't want any heartaches come next month or in January, because I've spent too much :gd_twocen :gd_twocen .
