Rebirth Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 I would lie and try my best at it to get out of work if I had a job in retail. lol
_John_Lennon_ Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 I would lie and try my best at it to get out of work if I had a job in retail. lol I had a few friends who worked at BestBuy last year around the shopping season and they said that they were all required to work on BF, if they tried to get out of working, or didnt show up, it would be grounds for termination.
peachysquirt21 Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 I had a few friends who worked at BestBuy last year around the shopping season and they said that they were all required to work on BF, if they tried to get out of working, or didnt show up, it would be grounds for termination.I believe this goes for Walmart employees as well. I think alot of the stores are like this for BF. They need all the workers they can get. This is why I will never have a job in retail. LOL I gotta be able to shop on BF.
VonnegutFan Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 Excuses are futile. The only option is to request the day off way in advance. Most likely not many people in retail will get Thanksgiving AND BF off. Last year I worked in a grocery store, I definately had to work the day before Thanksgiving (living hell in a grocery store) and BF just to get Thanksgiving off.
yuyi64 Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 I would lie and try my best at it to get out of work if I had a job in retail. lolLying wouldn't work with most retailers since that's a "blackout" date (cannot be requested off). Most retailers would require you to bring a doctor's note if you called out sick or you would be subject to disciplinary action.
DragonSlayer1500 Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 I have had it off for the last 2 years and we are closed on Thanksgiving. However, this year, I requested the day off back in April so that may have had something to do with it.
ebony0421 Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 I've worked it before, but later in the afternoon and I worked in the toy department. When I took the job, I knew that I had to work on bf, but my manager spoke to all of us. If you wanted to work first thing in the morning, you did just that. Our store didn't open until 9a.m. so I was happy. Oh I worked at the px(home and gargen/toys/sporting goods)
Marcster Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 Elementary, my dear Watson! Just say that shopping to you is a religion and claim BF as a religious holiday!
kmbrly Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 I had a few friends who worked at BestBuy last year around the shopping season and they said that they were all required to work on BF, if they tried to get out of working, or didnt show up, it would be grounds for termination. These were the rules at Kmart too when I worked there fresh out of high school (some 18 or so years ago LOL)We were told ahead of time if we missed work on Black Friday, don't even bother coming back.
peachysquirt21 Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 Elementary, my dear Watson! Just say that shopping to you is a religion and claim BF as a religious holiday!LMAO I like this...
geminimom Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 I currently work retail and it is mandatory, but if you tell your manager that you are going to be out of town, and make it somewhere far enough that it would be an inconvenience to make it back, it usually works.
shopping mom Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 My daughter works for Chick-Fil-A and they are sending out notices that no one can ask off for BF. She requested it off over a month ago and now they are saying you can't. ( At least her store) I really need her to be off!! She can drive now so now we can go 2 places at once and stay in touch with cell phones.
mangreg99 Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 I used to work at Walmart and I always worked the afternoon shift so that gave me all morning to shop. They have to have cashiers and other people working in the evening too so it always worked out for me. Dee:g_thumbri
SuperMommy Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 Let me just tell you, I worked in retail for years and my husband still does. It's pretty well impossible to get out of it. Most stores will tell you that if you still want to have a job afterwards you better be there!!!
alimfp Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 I have worked BF in the past. We were told if we called in, we had to be on our death beds or someone else in our family had to be on their death bed.. they were nice but strict. You didn't dare call in unless you were SICK or in the hospital. That said, I enjoy working BF. I hope to be doing it again this year.
Janismcmaster Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 Well I was just watching the news and they mentioned this website so I thought I would take a look. Cool Site. I would just work bf and hope to have christmas off.
Boilerhoss Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 Hmm I think I would say I got food poision from the turkey being under cooked or I ate to much the day before so I can't come in!! Hmm lets see if you fire me then who is gonna do my job??
mjmcca Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 Well I was just watching the news and they mentioned this website so I thought I would take a look. Cool Site. I would just work bf and hope to have christmas off. What news Program?
EliteABombAZ Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 I work for a grocery store. BF is typically the SLOWEST day for us because everyone is out shopping at the mall or department stores. Getting the day off is not a problem.
sns128 Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 I work in retail and the way I can shop on BF is I have my availabilty limited. I'm only available from 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm, so I can shop all day long before going to work. It works great for me. I know many people who request to work the morning of BF.
turtle_elf Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 When I worked retail, I would volunteer for the night shift. It worked! No one wanted to work after eating Thanksgiving dinner till they could pop, and others wanted to be fresh and alert, so they wouldn't work it. I would ask for that Saturday off instead. It worked! I worked my shift, shopped till I dropped, and then went to sleep. I decided I no longer wanted to work during the day on BF again after a very, disturbing experience! I was a Department Manager in the toy department back when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles came out the first time. People were scary! We had to quit putting the 4 turtles out because people were hurting each other! We had 2 women get in a knock down drag out fight! One was yanking on the others hair slamming her head down on the tile. It was a bloody mess and we had to call the police, ambulance, etc. We also had people fighting over some doll. Star Bright or something another. You pushed her tummy and she sparkled. Not sure what her name was, but people can really act ridiculous. But I guess it does give you stories to tell! Lol!
happyrat Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 I worked at Kmart when the tickle me elmo came out. We had them hidden in the back (rainchecks I think) and had to put them in black bags to keep people from fighting over them on the way out of the store.
happyrat Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 I wish we still had Kmart I miss the 605 merchandise.
couponmamaoftwins Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 Elementary, my dear Watson! Just say that shopping to you is a religion and claim BF as a religious holiday! Good anwer!

Just ridiculous to fight over merchandise. I would rather go without then get into a fight with someone & possibly getting seriously injured. Not worth it IMO.
lovebears65 Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 When I worked at walmart for BF. I agreed to work on Thanksgiving day just to have BF . I worked in the photolab so it was dead that day and I worked alone and my manager gave me BF off since the rest of the people had Thanksgiving off . I good trade off for me
Mike Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 In retail, you pretty much work BF or look for a new job.
lisa702 Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 I work at Walmart and im my store, if you're not on the schedule you are not allowed to work! I normally have Thurs and Fri off, so I am off. I have not worked a BF in years.
