jerseygurl Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Just wanted to let everyone know - while surfing for Black Friday ads be very careful. I was looking for a certain ad yesterday and came across a "scanned ad" link. I clicked on the link and got a very nasty virus. It took my IT guy close to 3 hours to get rid of it. I have a very good virus protection but this one got by. My IT guy said he had seen the same virus on 3 other computer yesterday. Don't understand why people do this, just becareful everyone. I was lucky to have someone who could help me get rid of it.
prissyturner Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 I was having the same issue with this. Thanks for the info.
jerseygurl Posted November 18, 2009 Author Posted November 18, 2009 Just wanted to let everyone know, the link was NOT from Gottadeal!
kansasteacher Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 I had a similar experience a few months ago when searching for a toy my son wanted... often the viruses "get in" when you click on the fake "virus alert" pop-up box that appears. Should you get one of those, the best thing to do is CTRL-ALT-DEL, go the task manager, and shut down your web browser from there. Reopen your browser and choose "go to home page" NOT "restore last session" and you may be able to avoid getting another one of those viruses.
bigjimslade Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 thanks for the warning! This is why everyone needs to stay here at GD. Brad and the other mods here work very hard to give you the most up to date info and the upper hand in your BF shopping. It is very easy to set up a site and set a trap like a virus. I can set one up in 10 minutes. So everyone lets stay here and soon we will have the WM ad.

I have been here for 2 years now and here is where I will stay! If it isnt here yet, I will wait!
braylan1 Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 omg, TY so much for posting this. My computer got one today, and I'm sure it was from searching for other BF ads. Can't believe people actually do this!!
amani Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 I don't trust the other sites just for that reason. When in doubt...come home to GOTTADEAL!
DLM Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 I think we may have a nasty one on our home computer from this as well. Haven't had the chance to have my son do a clean re-install yet. We have never had a virus before!!
hannahs_momma Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 I can say I used to search around all day for ads and I learned my lesson it does not pay to do this GD gets the ads first and faster! So stop wasting your time for leaks or ads GD has it
Scott Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 GD rocks! You do have to be careful when you are searching for just about anything that is high profile. Black friday ads, the hottest toy of the year, and other items fall under that category (think Zhu Zhu pets). There will always be people that take advantages of surges in web traffic... mainly because their sites don't stay around long all the time anyway... so quick volume is key. Surfer beware... Oh yeah... and just stay here at GottaDeal.
amyers12345 Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Sort of a side question, but I've never understood why people bother to do that. What do they gain by infecting computers with viruses? Even though it would just take a few minutes to do, I wouldn't want to hurt anybody's computer and if I wasn't making $$ I wouldn't want to even waste 10 minutes.
farmerjohn08 Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 I always search with google. And with the recent thing people are searching for, I open the search options and search for the last 24 hours. I also read the summaries. Virus sites will have mumbo-jumbo in the quick summary, misspelled words, and more. I think this is a really great site, but unfortunately theres places out there that are spelling out, without the scans, exactly what is in the ad. And there are also those sites that have the ad for a short time, before they get asked to take it down. There's not anywhere near the discussions and comparisons on other sites that there are here, but this one ad is really what people want to know about, year after year. I don't buy all my groceries at one store, but there is one store I shop at the most.
Klownicle Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 I noticed this also, I just close the window with task manager. But shaddy if you ask me.
apple251 Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Just wanted to thank GD for all your hardwork. It is great having a clean and honest place to look for deals! Thanks again!!

People in other countries trying to steal your personal info with a virus are not.
harrispizza4 Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Why on earth would anyone look anywhere else but Gottadeal????
iluvwalmart Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 I have a few other sites I go too that I know are safe. I also google & have it set up where it shows what sites are safe to go too & which are not.
wx4svr Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Maybe BigJim did it because he saw you going to another site. Just Kiddin'. Thanks for the warning. I'm on a Mac, so I don't have to worry... but thanks anyways. GottaDeal ROCKS!
tinkrbel Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 serves you right for going elsewhere:P Just kidding, but there are nasty ppl everywhere.
MICKEY3601 Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 I have ONLY used GD since I joined in 2005 & I won't use anyone else!!! Thank you GD for all you do for us!!!!!!!!!!!!! :yelclap:
arf110106 Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 Yea I think I ran into one yesterday, but luckily my anti virus stopped the page from loading.
KimberlySA Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 I found that one the other day too, but my virus protection stopped it and I've run three scans since. It's scary.
left210 Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 I have a few other sites I go too that I know are safe. I also google & have it set up where it shows what sites are safe to go too & which are not.How do you set up google to show you this?
marshmallowpuff Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 How do you even know that you have a virus? You think I'd know this by now...I run AVG often, but don't know otherwise how I would know if I had a virus.
amickeyfan Posted November 22, 2009 Posted November 22, 2009 reason why i don't go anywhere else... ditto by me! If it isn't on this site, I do not want to "look" at it on my computer :)
