  1. I read a book that talked about how expensive it was to be homeless.... things like not being able to buy in bulk (think a gallon of milk as opposed to a pint) because no fridge. Chalk this up to one more disadvantage
  2. Do you participate in charitable endeavors over the holidays? (Chanukah, Christmas, Kwanza, Thanksgiving, New Years, whatever you celebrate) In our house we consider community as one of the three pillars of importance (Family, school/work, community). Doing for others - in person or online, organized or not, time or cash - is big. The holidays just makes it more pronounced. This year in addition to organizing the office efforts to support seniors and adopt kids from the angel tree, and in addition to volunteering time, we've found a new cause - we are adding to the media collection at the local Pediatric wing of the hospital. They have a list of movies, Wii, and 360 games available to the young in-patients. But it isn't due to the holidays. Last December DD spent 4 days as a resident. We were so grateful for the wonderful staff... and we were very aware that at 16 she was better able to cope with the restrictions that most of the floor's residents. Movies help pass the time... so I am taking advantage of the sales to purchase some titles. Some for little-little ones, and some for teens.... (nothing else would have persuaded me to buy twilight!) They gave me a list of what they have. This is one more cause. (We also support our schools and local library with book donations - yay scholastic; and support the Ronald McDonald House - nearby and when we travel). This year DD told me she wants to adopt a child or 2 off the tree..... she has a job, and some disposable income, and has come to the realization that she has everything she needs. (Makes me so proud) So she wants to make sure that Christmas is a happy time for some kids in the community. What do you support? Do you participate as a family, or each individually?
  3. LOVE this idea! Your parents were brilliant!
  4. I have a fitbit flex (out of your stated price range) and I bought a metawatch strata (not a fitness device) at bestbuy a few months ago - both devices taught an important lesson about doing research into how it charges. The flex has this itty bitty adapter which you plug into a USB port... no issue - except the design leads to shorting out the charger, or having to do acrobatics with the 2 inch charger. It is a wicked PITA in an otherwise great product, MetAwatch took it a step further. there are 4 pins recessed on the backside of the watch. To charge it you CLAMP the charger over the watch and plug it into a USB port... The charger design SUX ROCKS. If the pins don't align perfectly the watch locks. After much fiddling I can unlock it (or I let the battery drain) but it seems to suck down battery while it is locked... I paid $35 for it... so it was worth the price... but: Make sure the charging methodology is sound. Hopefully it is somewhat standardized - like a mini USB... or a cord that plugs into the device.... read the reviews. If your in for a penny go in for the pound. the main devices Tara mentioned offer some great features and interfaces you will wish you have if you go for a knock off.
  5. Check where you (spouse) work. We get discounted versions... I just had to verify where I work and got office for $10. No subscription...
  6. I misread that at first and wondered what the big deal was about a free soda... definitely over the top for a carbonated beverage.
  7. Ok... DM me if you find out - cuz that will send me an email... and I will follow your lead! We are looking at the TV for DD16 and she is starting to read the BF ads - that makes it much harder to surprise her!
  8. organized. We celebrate Chanukah at home and Christmas with the inlaws. Since Chanukah isn't really a gift giving holiday we drag it out... everyone gets a turn, and we all watch that person open their gift... everyone gets to share in it... this carried over to us at the inlaws, which allows the gift giver to watch the kids faces as they open the gifts (not always good - they are kids!) and us to see who the thank you note should be written to. Makes it more enjoyable and less harried...
  9. OMG... the TV... $79... what model... anyone have a schedule yet? that may be worth losing sleep over....
