I would make it equal. Get a few gifts that are just for them alone and then get them a few joint gifts or one big joint gift for their home. I keep a list of things I see that I would like for my house. Whenever my mom asks what I want I tell her one if those items. I go shopping for my kids on black Friday so I wouldn't want to bring them with me. I always go to Wal-Mart, Kohls, and target for sure then anywhere else that had a good deal on anything I'm looking for. My DS started high school this year so I have ordered him a letterman jacket to surprise him with at Christmas. All my DD has asked for was a Polaroid camera. I had a best buy gift reward to use and used it towards that and found a groupon for the film for her camera and ordered that. I usually don't start shopping at all until Black Friday but I must say it feels good to get a head start. We have a little Halloween tree and I have a Christmas present under it this year
