I personally would do everything high tech until black friday then grab the ads and whatever else you can think you need, however if you are in line, going high tech first is the easiest. I'd price match later in the day after you get the primary things off the list.

Always buy for myself, and this way especially on series dvd bluray tv shows I get the current seasons I need and don't have to worry about someone giving me the wrong season. When you get shows like the Big Bang Theory for example is has season 7 out and is on season 8. The last thing I want is to get a duplicate season from someone who wants to get me something they think I may like. So that to me just makes it easier, to give them a list of item to get and this way the $10 I spend I know that I save up to $40 for myself later. If you want to invest yearly I'd say go for Dept. 56 if you want to become a heavy collector, the other factor is how much storage room do you have for boxes when you won't be using them. Just another thing to consider, are you going to leave them up year long, or just for the holidays. I can speak from experience if you want to do it, plan on being very careful with each box and taking time to set them up it can take a long time and remember that each year you add to it, it takes along time to put up each piece. Because not only are you going to want the village pieces as in the houses, but you'll probably want to buy the accessories that go to each building. Just for instance if you buy houses with peppermints, you'll want streets, cars, lights, and everything in the peppermint that the village company makes that you can think of to help complete the decor of the village.
