I'm thinking about getting a 16GB SDHC and 2 or 3 4GB SHDC cards @ WalMart. (I take a lot of high quality photos - Nikon D500 and a Canon Rebel pro series.
Any software can be taken off it. Don't let that be a deciding factor. Plus, if you get a good one, you should just plug it in, and have it show up in the "My Computer" or Finder window (on OSX).

Some of them allow you to hook up a digital cable signal (like from a cable company) or satellite feed (from a satellite provider) via coaxial or RCA interfaces. Not all of them have the inputs... just check them out before buying.
From a guy's standpoint... I like Sony's Cybershot series if you are going with a compact thing. If you are going for better shots, I like Nikon or the Canon Rebel series.
Depends on the type of camera and how much you want to spin. It also matters if you want to make normal print-outs (3.5x5 - 8x10) or larger (which really requires a better camera like a DSLR)
