  1. I like your approach, but I firmly believe that similar deals will be possible whether you choose 1080p or 4k. It will be a buyers market below 60".
  2. We have seen the same thing, movies with that sticker, and we just bought one or two of them at a yardsale for 50 cents unopened.
  3. Take a left past Circuit City and once you pass the loading dock you can round the corner to another strip of shops that completely empty. You then find yourself making a right turn and you see the sign to yet another large box strip mall and the sign that indicates that a Tiger Direct is nearby. Still noticeable is the Office Depot Building even with the letters removed. Then in the next photos you see a store that sticks out to create a nice windbreak for shoppers. That is Tiger Direct/CompUSA. This store was the first place I stood in line for an actual computer back when the CompUSA folks would greet you with tickets and hot chocolate. They were the true pioneers of the safe and sane approach to Black Friday.
  4. If you travel to the right, make a little hook and a slight turn and you are finally at Best Buy! It looks empty, but that is a ruse. It is still in operation although it was slated for closure years ago. I never could get a decent answer from any employee and I imagine that someday they will receive their pink slips via an Amazon Prime Drone.
  5. Remember Bed, Bath and Beyond? Well this store is the ghoulish neighbor to Circuit City....apparently their appeal to the masses was beyond their control.
  6. As promised, here are some scary photos of what now reminds me of a ghost town. First, we have the Regency location(Jacksonville, FL.) of Circuit City, and the only creatures that now seem to inhabit the place are scores of wasps under the numerous light fixtures. Keep in mind that all of these stores are within walking distance and you can literally drive to all of them without re-entering traffic. This is not one of the newest stores, but clearly is not like the traditional store with the red "Circuit Plug" that you would walk through. That store is in another part of town and was my favorite.
  7. Oh how I laugh at the movie purchases! We all do it and I am especially guilty of purchasing ones with digital copies inside because it feeds the beast when it comes to 4k movie watching. You never get out of what you put in$$$$! The digital age at least makes a more justifiable argument for overspending on movies.
  8. Even camping out is no longer a challenge. We still have our dinner online, but have to do it a day earlier or not at all. The big challenge in the old days was beating the college kids to the line, and staying there until the doors opened at 5AM. Nobody got very much sleep if any and the wife used to be extremely funny when deprived of sleep. These days, she sleeps all night in a warm tent. Where is the fun in that by comparison?
  9. Don't be shy when it comes to a larger TV for the bedroom. I always recommend a 55" TV because of the distance to the bed, but be sure to measure and consult the chart that was talked about. Another thing to consider is the bargain 4k TVs that will have Roku built in. Women absolutely love the ease of operation of a Roku and integrated with a TV makes a happy wife.
  10. I wonder how many stores are left. One news article said 70.
  11. https://youtu.be/k-IFsCf0b_8 Here are some nostalgic commercials from Circuit City. Where service is state of the art....
  12. Be on the lookout for a flyer for 15 percent off on any one purchase until the 19th of November, which brings it relevance to the Black Friday season. On one side you will also find a ticket to the "Ollie's Army Night". When you visit an Ollie's, you sign up to join his bargain saving army. According to the two sided ticket, you can save 25% off of toys and Christmas items. There is also another 15% discount on everything else. You can also bring a guest to the event. This type of marketing is very refreshing and makes the customer feel appreciated, even if it is a closeout store.
  13. Circuit City used to have the clean room where you could close the door and listen to the pure audio without distractions. There were many things that they did so well in the early days. When they let all of the senior people go, Kids with high pressure sales tactics just didn't cut it and they closed for good shortly after.
  14. It wasn't that long ago. Ten years ago to be exact that you could wade through a Black Friday ad laden newspaper and see the plethora of stores which offered the only way back then to entice you into their stores. The online experience was just beginning to show itself as a way to entice customers, but back then it was secret sales that pointed you to the brick and mortar store. Those were some exciting times and you started to see wacky campers stay a night or two out in the cold for a $199 computer. Fast forward ten years and the playing field is considerably narrower. Some giants of the day in their specialties have shuttered their doors for good and others are a mere shadow of themselves and are on life support. In the next few days, I will be visiting some of these stores and reflecting upon their significance to the shopping experience. I will be snapping a few pictures as well, and invite all of you to do the same. But for now the roll call: Circuit City: Gone 2009 CompUSA: Gone HHGregg: Gone KMart: Almost gone Sears: Almost gone OfficeMax: Swallowed By Office Depot TigerDirect: Almost gone Online only Montgomery Ward: Gone 2001 Sam Goody/Musicland: Gone K B Toys: Gone Borders: Gone Coconuts and Camelot Music: swallowed by FYE EBGames and Rhino: swallowed by Gamestop Sound Advice: Gone Do you have any favorite memories of these places? Please feel free to mention any that were local favorites of yours. Do you have any new stores opening in your area that might participate in Black Friday? We are seeing a rise in the super dollar market so Ollie's is new to the area and reminds me of Big Lots.
  15. We are hoping for some great 4k deals this year to plan for and those dates look awfully good!
  16. We have seen Nintendo really miss out on filling customer demand and it will be a wait and see if they step up to the plate this year. They seem to be satisfied with a safer approach and will not gamble when it comes to new or retro gaming systems.
  17. I have found that spending a bit more on something from the shark line would be better. I sometimes get stuck with vacuum duty as well as what was constantly referred to a swiffer policing. The shark has a better unit with washable pads and better mobility with lights! The vacuum duty always leads to a liquid cleanup and the shark also has a scrubber built in that tends to beat the job into submission.
  18. We did see Frys shake things up earlier in the year, which leads me to believe that lower prices are coming this year.
  19. Did you ever get that must have item on Black Friday, only to have it come back to habitually haunt you? I am sure some items seemed classy at the time but turned out trash worthy. Did you spend too much and regret it later? Was the cost to maintain the bargain cost prohibitive? Did you get into a relationship squabble over your decision? We can all name some items that were real duds so give us your personal top five here. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using GottaDEAL mobile app
  20. Bring that one grumpy person that owes you a favor. Tell them that they only have to buy the bike and meet you outside of the store. The debt is paid and if they are a smoker, they appreciate the dash and puff at the end.
  21. Depending upon the model, look for deals in the $225-250 range. Expect to pay more for the 1 TB model if he needs the extra storage for games. I will be surprised if they come out swinging with last years 500GB for $199, but it could happen, especially with as many that just sat there over the holiday weekend unsold.
  22. Perhaps we can help you this year. There are a few considerations this year depending upon your budget and the size you wish to obtain for your household. Two years ago, HDR was not even a consideration for me, as uncle Pnambic has been dead on for years, due to the lack of content and the two competing types. There are a few TVs by TCL that will make your decision a whole lot easier since BOTH types of HDR are on the same set. Another thing to consider is the war itself. HDR10 is free and open source, while Dolby Vision is a pay to play license that the vendor is slow to push to eligible TVs which did not come with it initially. 2016 was a strange year as I was led to believe that my set only had HDR10. It turns out that my Sams Club 70" LG was a rebadged model that had more expensive internals that gave it Dolbyvision and Atmos as well, although LG will never admit it due to legalities involved. Another consideration is that HDR10+ will probably be a software update to existing models, since it is not a major change but places emphasis on being dynamic like Dolby instead of static. The war for dominance may be over as soon as VUDU adopts the HDR10 standard alongside Dolby Vision in their offerings this year.
  23. You are absolutely killing me with that statement ,lol. If you have a woodworker, or in budgetary terms a particle board magician, you can usually craft a new entertainment center out of the old stalwarts to fit a flat screen on top of it. My brother in law does that as a hobby. As a general rule, dual arm wall brackets are a heck of a lot cheaper than an entertainment center, even if you have to finally ditch it.
  24. Perhaps $200-225. The new system gives it hope to come down a little.
  25. 50UH5530 here. We probably have the same TV if you bought it from Best Buy. Mine was a direct replacement for a Black Friday Toshiba. I am using it as a computer monitor and a movie viewer since this model has HDR10 and i use an Xbone S. I do recommend a 55" or 60" for the bedroom due to the viewing distance from the bed itself.
