Please help an elder member of society here (am considering sending this to my nephew) who hasn't kept up with consoles in the last decade or so. Are there design/hardware changes that make the slim design less preferrable than the original design?

it has a built in network adapter. in the previous version, you have to buy a network adapter (~ $20-30) to play online..

The CD is not with tray loading like the one in a computer but "pop up" door.

other than that everything else should be the same.

That's certainly a benefit.

Vis-a-vis, a notebook slim drive likely?

That does worry me a bit. Slim drives never seem to be terribly reliable in my experience.

here is a pic of pop up door:

I am not familiar at all regarding notebook slim drive. (what is it?)

Regardless, it shouldn't be a problem. But I highly recommend to lay the ps2 flat, instead of vertical. this is also true for the older version, even thoudh the ads show the console vertically.

Thank you for the clarification, James. I was thinking more along these lines:

The only drawbacks are that you can't put in a hard drive (only ever used for FF XI?) and the old desgin is easy to find warez modchips for.

Since I buy my games and don't care about FF XI, I :heart; my PSTwo. A really cool uncle will also pick up a copy of Katamari Damacy to go with it :)

I can imagine this uncle is going to end up purchasing the "Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf" equivalent.

I'm considering getting one of these to use as a DVD player and gaming system for when my wife goes back to the states and I'm stuck here.

I've already checked, and it is dual voltage which is a big plus.

When playing DVDs, is there any problem with playing backup DVDs? My wife will be taking the DVD collection with here, but there are a couple that I would like to have around.

I would be greatly appreciative is someone could test it out, or knows of a link.

Thanks

That's a good question, I never realied it myself (since I don't have a dvd burner)

it seems like there will could be minor problems of playing backup dvds. (but in gerenal no)

may want to try netflix..

Netflix isn't such a great deal when you are in Germany. I have a USPS address, but it can take up to 2 weeks for mail to get here.

Plus, we have free DVD rentals at the Base library.
