  1. All but a couple of specific models of TVs only had 1080i inputs until mid-2006 when models like the Samsung HLS- series started shipping. Even then at least half of the TVs sold were still 720p models. I happen to have a 1080p Samsung HLS with 1080p inputs but I'm still thinking of getting this since Netflix carries every US HD-DVD and blu-ray release. If I buy it I can at least watch the HD-DVD exclusives in 1080i instead of 480i, when I can't get blu-ray version for my PS3.
  2. ^ good warning, but this still looks like a nice deal for people who don't need the tuner. In my area Comcast has gone digital so analog cable tuning is useless to me anyway. This is also the cheapest and easiest way to copy a bunch of old home movies on tape to DVD: connect the camcorder or VCR to the inputs (it includes yellow plug and S-video), press play for the tape and record for the DVD recorder, come back when it's done.
  3. This should be very good for everything except 3D games (intel graphics are lousy at 3D). This is $100 cheaper than Dell's budget ones and the Gateway has much better features. Gateway is supposed to make decent laptops.
  4. The wireless network adapter is also $85 once you check out, good deal! Dell isn't offering an extended warranty and it only comes with 90 days. Can you buy an extension directly from Microsoft in the US? (xbox.com only gives pricing for Australia)
  5. Or an Xbox360 and its HD-DVD player add-on - $600 total but you get games -and- HD-DVD FYI you can rent HD-DVDs from Netflix for no extra charge
  6. This is about 18" deep and weighs around 90 pounds (30-40 less than a 32" tube TV). I'm still happy with the 50" version of this DLP after several months. The only bad thing about DLP and LCD projection TVs is that the viewing angle isn't as good as with plasma or tube TVs. There's a wide code where it looks great but if you move outside of that it's much dimmer.
  7. If you want something bigger for $100 less - http://www.gottadeal.com/Deal/17328 Samsung 50" 1080p DLP for $1649 shipped from Amazon, deal is still on at least for today. You can't hang it on a wall, but it's only 18" deep and weighs under 80 pounds. I have one and it's a great TV. Or for $1849 shipped get the 56" - http://www.gottadeal.com/Deal/17333
  8. No, and past deals have vanished after a day or two. Buy now or regret it later :)
  9. Excellent TV, and I paid much more than this for the 50" version. It has great upconversion (rescaling) of regular DVDs using s-video or component cables, so you don't need to buy a new DVD player. It weighs less than a 32" tube TV (under 100 lbs) so can go on many less expensive stands. Repairs of DLP TVs are expensive (easily $500) so a 4-5 year extended warranty is a good idea.
  10. NewsRadio was a great show, and 2 seasons for $20 is a steal. Veronica Mars is supposed to be good, and it's Joss "Buffy" Wheedon approved, but I haven't seen any myself.
  11. Good deal, and the upgrades (Windows restore CD, extra HD space, extra RAM, DVD burner) are all good deals if you need/want them. This will do everything except play 3D games. Intel motherboard graphics are 99% useless for that.
  12. Nice deal for a basic computer, this would be a good computer for your own work or to set up an email and photos PC for the parents. The built-in card reader will help if you/they have a digital camera. You might pick up a 256 - 512 MB RAM stick to go with it. Check what kind you need at www.crucial.com, and use their price as the limit on what you should pay. Note this has almost zero gaming power, except for web flash games.
  13. For music CDs, also check Amazon.com and DeepDiscountCD.com prices, since either one can be $4-5 cheaper than the other from one disc to the next.
  14. My Asus A8N-E socket 939 has been working flawlessly with an X2 4200+ for several months. My Asus P4C800-E has worked flawlessly with a P4 3.2C for 3 years. Asus makes good boards except possibly their cheapest. Looks like AMD price cuts are at most online stores now, good deals since you can't actually buy Core 2 yet except in complete systems like a $1,500+ Dell XPS. Be careful though, some of the AMD chips are at the old prices, some are at the new.
  15. Wait a few days and get it dirt cheap. I just read that AMD has decided to cut prices even more than originally planned, with a 4600+ probably selling for under $250.
  16. Only a GottaDeal if you need it today. Intel's Core 2 desktop chips will be released next week, and AMD will be dropping CPU prices 50+% in response. This will be under $175 on July 24, with the X2 4600+ selling for around $300. AMD price cuts: http://dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=3361
  17. A 720p or 1080i HD signal downsampled and displayed at 752x480 will probably still look better than standard def signal. But this isn't the set to buy for use with an Xbox360, PS3, HD-DVD, Blu-ray or with a HD cable box. This is a good set for regular DVDs and regular TV that's $200+ cheaper than a HD plasma.
  18. Last day, and a good laptop deal if you want a (big!) 17" screen. Add the Radeon X1400 for $99 if you want to play any games. Or the geforce 7900 for $299 to play at much higher resolution and with more visual effects / "eye candy" If you want a smaller screen, look at the Inspiron coupon lower on the GD main page and get an E1505 instead.
  19. That's what I'm still recommending, the nvidia card they offer for more money is actually slower.
  20. Spend an extra $99 on the Radeon X1400 video card upgrade and this will be great for light 3D gaming too.
  21. That is a sweet deal for a non-gaming laptop. The Pentium M runs cool but fast, and 1 GB RAM will give great performance for Office, photo editing, etc. including faster switching between tasks. It also has built-in wifi, enough disk space to keep your music collection on it with plenty of room for applications. The only thing I'd recommend adding is the extra $10 for recovery CDs.
  22. Intel Core Duo is better for laptops than AMD's chips, the exact opposite of Intel vs AMD on the desktop. The Intel laptop dual core chips are fast but run cool (and quiet), while their desktop P4 chips are slower and run very hot. Apple uses this laptop chip to make their fast but tiny and silent Mac Minis. This is an incredible deal, I'm tempted to get one as a desktop replacement but I don't need a laptop so I'm waiting for next month when Intel's new "Conroe" desktop processors will be out.
  23. This was designed to run quiet in collaboration with the founder of SilentPCReview.com, here's a review with tips on making it even more low-noise: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article591-page1.html
  24. How long do batteries last, using alkaline or rechargeables? I've heard some of these super-remotes drain your batteries in a few days.
  25. Tempting -- upgrade to 1 GB, 80 GB HD, and Radeon X1400 graphics and it's still under $1,000.
