Need to make new couch cushions...best place to get materials?

Recommended Posts

My littlest guy fell asleep on the couch and apparently got a chill, which made him pee....all over the couch cushions. I have this new fabulous, very large Electrolux washer & dryer set, but these cushions will not wash properly in them. The cushions are that very stiff material and are long, so just shoving them in there was a chore in & of itself. Then, of course, they use little water, so it comes out smelling as bad as it went in, with only one end actually seeming to have gotten wet/washed. :gdparanoid:

Anywho...where would I be able to find this stiff cushion material to make new cushions? The covers are fine and washed up nicely...it's just the insides that need help. Any suggestions are much appreciated!

Unfortunately, our local fabric stores don't carry the heavy duty foam I'll need for the cushions. I've debated soaking them one at a time in the bathtub with something to remove the smell. The Pine Sol is a great idea...thank you. If that doesn't work, I may just end up purchasing them online...but it will cost me about $160 total (before shipping) to replace them all. :yuck: For now, we are sitting on the throw pillows on top of the springs.

I'll keep looking for a local supplier though...I'd really hate to spend $160+shipping.

When I reupholstered my couch, I went to Joann's to buy my cushions but didn't like the quality, so I looked in the phone book under upholstery and went to the nearest plac and they sold me the cushion for 80.00. IT was 5 inches thick and 7 feet long. I made one lond cushion with a zipper instead of 3 separate ones and it worked out better. But I have 6 grandchildren and dogs in the house that get excited and pee. My couch has been peed on more times thatn I can count. I have microsuede and it never soaks through, but if it did, I would go to the laundrymat like was mentioned before and use the big loader.

When you say your local fabric stores in Delaware (didn't have what you need), I'm guessing you mean Joann's since Hancock Fabrics left. Have you tried Hayes Sewing Center on 202 or Calico Corners in the Fairfax Shopping Center? Calico carries different grades of foam and may be able to order it for you. Also, you might want to check The Interior Alternative off of 896 as they carry a line of furniture (like Calico Corners) and might be able to get the kind of foam you want. Best of luck!

I don't travel to Wilmington if I have any other choice...traffic that way makes me nuts. But thanks for the names of the stores, I have relatives that live further north and I can ask them to check up there for me.

And I hadn't even thought to call an upholstery store/dealer!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I do appreicate any & all! :yup:
