Help with a coffee maker

Recommended Posts

I have a daughter who has requested a coffee maker. My husband and I have never drank coffee. I am clueless on what to buy. Do they make a coffee maker that only makes 2 cups? If anyone could assist me, I would appreciate it. Thanks so much.....Angela

Coffee makers are made for just about anything you would want. From 1-cup to hundreds. I personally like the Hamilton Beach Brewstations. They have a holding area instead of a pot, which does not allow the water in the coffee to evaporate if you want a cup an hour later. They are inexpensive and everyone I have every shown mine to has bought one and loved it.

There is one without a timer for $10 less.

The other thing every coffee lover needs is a burr grinder. NOT a rotary one, but a BURR grinder.

Other tricks... Buy freshly roasted whole bean coffee. Keep it in the pantry - never refrigerate coffee! If you cannot find freshly roasted, many supermarkets carry eight-o'clock coffee. Relatively inexpensive and quite good.

Remember, grind your own and keep at room temp.

For 2 cups... maybe a french press, or else something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Black-Decker-DCM18S-Personal-Coffeemaker/dp/B00005MF9C/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1201616839&sr=8-2

Hope it helps,

Warren

  • 2 weeks later...

They make 4 cup makers and they make a good cup of coffee. By the way the "cup" the coffee makers talk about is not really a cup, but about 6 ounces. Most coffee mugs are much bigger so a 4 cup maker makes about 2 cups. I would suggest a full size coffee maker as if they ever have company over they will not have to wait for many cups. I personally like my Kitchen Aid as it makes a pot very quickly. (got it for $10 at Lowes on mark down) I also liked my old Bun and it was the best, but kind of expensive and only good for big coffee drinking households. (really need to use it for a full pot everyday or the water gets stale in the unit)

Any good name brand should be ok. I have had Krups, Braun, and about all the others. The Bun is the only one that looks like it would last longer than the others. If you live with hard water they do not last much more than a year if you use them a lot.

If they are serious about coffee then a good burr grinder is more important than the coffee maker. This can be used for regular coffee as well as espresso.

I was going to say exactly what I've highlighted in red.

If your daughter has hard water, she can run white vinegar through the coffee maker once every few months to clean it out (and two more passes with regular water to get rid of the vinegar).

I have a Cuisinart that has lasted me a long time, and I use it twice a day, every day.

Mr. Coffee is junk, avoid them at all costs -- a Mr. Coffee coffee maker might last 2-3 months, unless you don't open the box.

I have used many coffee makers, and by far the one I like best is my Senseo. It brews one or two cups only and I don't have to measure out anything because all the coffee comes in prepackaged pods (good for college/apartments). There are also a BUNCH of different coffee flavors (I like the French Vanilla and the mild roast). You can usually pick up the pods at WalMart for ~$3.50 for 18 pods.

If you don't want to pay the full store price, you can access it through ShareSenseo. Here's the link: https://www.sharesenseo.com/q6/1.jsp

from one of the forums http://forums.gottadeal.com/showthread.php?t=90164

If you just answer that you love coffee, everyone wants to know what you think, and that you're very social, you can get access to the order form. It's only $15 since you only pay for shipping. I got mine in about 2 weeks.

Mods, if I'm not allowed to do the hyperlinking here, just give me a heads-up! :-)

{Get her one with a timer! Nothing makes the day start off better than waking up to a ready pot of coffee}

I agree. That is the ONLY reason I do not have a Bunn! I cannot find one with a timer. So my coffee is ready at 6:15 when I am ready for it.
