wireless card for laptop

Recommended Posts

This post reminds me that I need to fill out a rebate form for my card. I bought from Verizon about a month ago and I walked out of the store paying no more then $100 (sorry I can't remember exactly how much and can't find papers right now) but there was a rebate form for me to send in and I think it is worth half. I do not have phone service through them because I have an excellent unlimited minutes plan, so I signed up for the aircard service only. I only have a laptop and the service is so great, that I am dropping my cable internet service and going to strictly use the aircard.

I will look at the papers tomorrow when I will not bother my fiance and I will update if the figures are different.

I don't need one for internet service (like verizon). I just need one so that my son can access our wireless internet in our home and not have to stay plugged in to the router. I'm thinking they are two different types. My laptop came wireless ready, and so did my husband's. Anyway, if someone can help, I would appreciate it greatly!

so you need a wireless router. we got ours for under 30.00 at walmart.

I thought the router was the box that you connected to the phone line. We already have that. I need the card that you put into the laptop so that you can get online without being plugged into the router. (At least that's what I think it's called.)

No, the "box" you are describing is the DSL modem in your case. If you pick the "box" up, it'll probably say "DSL modem" on it somewhere...

To do what you want, you need a wireless router. I recommend:

The Linksys WRT54G: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124010

It's $49.99 with free shipping.

If you don't mind fronting the extra $10 to get it back on a rebate, then this WRT54GL router is much better:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124190

After rebate it'll be $4 more than the WRT54G model. The "L" variation has more RAM and ROM and can be modified with 3rd-party software (if you'd ever get into that...)

I don't recommend Netgear or D-Link. SMC and Buffalo make good products but setup can be a bear if you aren't an egghead.

I'm starting to hear good things about Level One routers, but I have not had any personal experience with them. Here's an example of what I am talking about: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833118004

Hope that helps.

the wireless router plugs unto the internet modem and allows your wireless laptops to use the internet. For example our desktop has the cable modem, the modem is plugged into the wireless router and out 2 laptops use the wireless signals from the wireless router. The links marcster posted are what you are looking for. Like I said we paid less than 30.00 at walmart and it took the DH about 20 minutes to get everything up and running.

This is the one we have:

When I had DSL they gave me a router with it. As for the card, try looking at Best Buy, you might get lucky and find something for at or under $30.

You can also use a usb wireless network adapter providing you have a free usb port on your laptop. Whichever you choose, I always go to newegg.com or tigerdirect.com and compare prices. Newegg has them starting at $20 or so. Also, to research before you buy you can go to cnet.com. Good luck.

I'm looking for a wireless card for a laptop. Anyone know of any good deals?

Hi Pinkroses - I am not an "egghead" but I use the same type of wireless card in my lDell laptop. I use "Netgear" - If you are not in a hurry and don't need to be near the store you purchase this from - try one of these sites online, my husband orders from them and he is an "egghead" ;) - computergeeks.com or microcenter.com. Microcenter does have Brick/Mortar not sure if in Georgia

Good Luck,

Shoppinggirl
