How do you order in the "small business dept." and get away with it-- if you're not a small business?

There is no verification, so any individual can order from Dell Small Business.

You just need one thing, a business name :)

Aaron's Consulting sounds good to me :2football

Alright, so I'm looking to buy a computer, and monitor. Any help?

What kind of desktop system? What do you plan on doing with it?

Do you need an AGP slot (gaming graphics card)?

What kind of monitor and size? CRT or LCD? 17, 19, or 20?

Most importantly what's your budget?

P4 2.8-3.4GHz

40-80GIG HD, Normal Graphics Card, etc.

I will do web design and stuff with the computer. My computer right now isn't bad, it's just I want something new. I'd like a LCD 17, or 19. $1,000 or so for my budget.

I hope we can find a good deal, I need new technology.

I wouldn't get anything faster than a 3.0 ghz. You won't notice too much of a difference for the extra $ you put down.

When doing web design, you will want at least an 80GB hard drive. Also, an integrated graphics card is not good to have. Once you get something that requires a good graphics card, you pretty much have to get an entire new computer.

The Dimension 4700 is pretty decent. It has integrated graphics, which I personally wouldn't reccomend. I picked up a computer almost twice as good as that one about 6 months ago. If you can, wait for a better deal.

BobbyDouglas, I have a 120gig harddrive that is mapped to my computers has H:\ for HTML ;) -- for all my webdesign work. I've got it covered. Also, I keep all of my data on a different harddrive, therefore if my computer crashes-- I'm safe.

For those of you trying to buy a new system from Dell -- and want to be able to say that you Gottadeal ... :) Here's my $.02.

If you can be patient and do some comparison shopping over a period of several weeks you will find that Dell is very clever at their pricing and sales promotions. I have found that even the best "sounding" sales are little more than a shuffling of $'s from item-to-item and that the bottom line price of my "ideal" system seldom varied more than $50 to maybe $100 on a $1100 configuration -- no matter what. But, occasionally they wil screw up and have a REAL deal. That's the time to scorch your Mastercard. :2roller: The REAL sales seem to be oriented around deep discounts on their LCD monitors or their limited time $500 non-stacking coupons that show up in e-mails. Almost always the Small Business division of Dell has the lowest bottom line prices -- but NOT always.

And, don't home in on just one model either. I found that I could get a more powerful/flexible Dimension 8000 series system for almost the exact same price as a 4600 a few months back -- it was a strange situation but one of the quirks of their sales promo at that time.

Watch their "outrageous deals" section too. Sometimes they really are good deals and sometimes they are the dregs of the old models that they are trying to clear out of inventory. Sometimes you can customize one of the outrageous deal configurations and do OK. Just be aware that you MAY be buying a "last generation" computer.

Ya gotta shop before you drop (your cash) ! The Dell gang are masters at marketing which means they can separate you from your money and make you feel like you got kissed too.

The last tip I have for now: On the day you order your system, print out the rebate paperwork. When your system arrives, and before you even plug it in, SEND IN THE REBATE. Two (maybe 3) of my friends have gotten all excited and involved with their new systems and FAILED to send in their rebate papers in time. When they woke up and realized it, they were not happy campers  since they lost out on $100-$150 each. That's real money !

I hope you find this info useful ! Happy Hunting :fedora:

I'll add my two cents from my past error. The free upgrades that they offer...sometimes you have to actually click the right circle to get it for free.

I ordered two computers at the same time and didn't click the right spot on one of the computers and ended up with less memory. So don't be in a hurry!

i fully agree with bigbob. you have to watch a configuration or 3 that you'd be interested in buying for quite a while. most of the time the price doesn't change much, especially if you're interested in a very base system. but sometimes either their deals line up with exactly what you were looking for, or they just have something truly fantastic, and you get a big discount. i took a couple months looking for the notebook i'm typing on right now, and got an absolutely killer deal (hint: i got it in june 2003 and the first time you could buy a better notebook for cheaper was the $500 coupon in nov 2004).
