goldie Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 I need new glasses... Anybody here used Costco Optical (I assume they have one!)? How do you like it? Price? Quality? Thanks.
RobD Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Yes, many times and at multiple locations. We have always been very pleased. My daughter and I have high index prescriptions (-8 and above) so our lenses are incredibly expensive. My last glasses from the optician's office at my eye doctor were over $400. I priced out Rx sunglasses last year: at the eye dr.'s they were going to be $425. Our insurance had changed (I had forgotten) so I just asked for the prescription. At Costco I paid $125 including the lenses. These were polarized, high index lenses with antireflective glare and the edges rolled and polished. My daughter just got the cutest glasses back in november. They are a black and rose B.U.M. frame called echo. I just pulled the receipt: frames: $49.99; High index aspheric lenses $69.99; antireflective treatment $29.99. Total: $149.97. Everyone keeps asking her where she got them and they're always so surprised when she says Costco. We also order her contacts from there too. A 6 month supply of advance toric lenses were $120 AND they had a $50 rebate. RobD
trbarginhunter Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 DH ordered his glasses from Costco and saved over $100 (it's 5:30 am here and he's sleeping so I can't ask him the exact amount). Great glasses, no problems. My Dad just ordered his, also with huge savings--but it's only been a couple of days, so he hasn't received them yet. I know a few other people who have used Costco Optical, all with no complaints.
tjarena Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 I use Costco for both my eyeglasses, and myDD contacts, and I love them! The prices are good, the eye Dr was great, and I had no problems. I would recommend them.
txmomma Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 We get our eyeglasses & contact lenses at Costco optical and have never had a problem. They have good prices and the quality is as good as anywhere else.
ccbayly Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 I had a negative experience, but I think it was likely an isolated incedent. My daughter sees only 20/300 and was told at costco that she didn't need glasses. I would go back (to a different costco) because I am so pleased with all the other costco experiences we have had. My insurance doesn't cover costco optical any more though.
sadmom5 Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Most of the people at my work use costco and love it. If you aren't a member ask for a day pass. then but a gift carf, you can enter the next time with the gift card. I send them to my kids at college and they can shop at their local costco even though they themselves aren't members.
snakeswiff Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 got my son's glasses there....good deal! They were pretty quick about it too!
Giggles Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 We joined Costco just to get my husband's glasses. The price is good, but the REAL Reason we got his glasses there is because of the WARRANTY. If anything and they mean ANYTHING happens to your glasses, they will replace them FREE. So he buys one pair from his RX then after about a year, he buys another pair. Since he works outside and around all sorts of stuff that scratches his lenses we felt the WARRANTY was just so worth it.Our Costco will honor a RX for two years. So this is working out great for us. We just went last night and turned in one of his pairs to get the lenses replaced. And YES you have to join Costco to use the Optical dept.
Giggles Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 I forgot to say that the WARRANTY is good for ONE YEAR from the date of purchase.
fiasmom Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 I go there and use the doc and I have bought glases and contacts. Love them I think they are the cheapest place I can find Focus monthly torics.
bugsette Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 I've asked for a day pass several times and they said they don't have them
imaguy1010101010 Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 if your lens pops loose or if you loose that little screw they will replace it for you for free
ryleeblack Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 I like getting my glasses at Costco. It's a lot cheaper. =)
kgoble78 Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 I've asked for a day pass several times and they said they don't have themThat's weird. I went to the customer service dept in nov and told them I would like to look around to see if I wanted to join and they let me. If you asked at the door I would just enter the exit door and go straight to the CS desk. Worth a try I guess. :)
Guest mldepalma Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 I love Costco too for glasses and contacts... The exams are cheap (well, there was an extra fee the first time I went - but I only paid that once - and I've been back 5 times) The Dr. is very competent and the selection of frames and contacts was fine. The cost was MUCH lower than the other places - even chains- in this area. I would certainly recommend them. The only problem I had, was that it was hard to get an appointment - it just took a long time because he was soo busy. Otherwise, I think they're great. Good luck! Oh, one other thing... The store I go to only accepts cash or checks - no charge cards (like costco in general) and I didn't realize that the first time I went. Do you know anyone with a membership? I know I can bring someone in with me to visit the store. As long as I "pay" then my friend can get anything she wants... don't know, but that might also hold true for optical - might be worth looking into that too. Good luck!
sevirj Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 My MIL buys her contacts from Costco, and has had no complaints with the service or the price.
rosalia1 Posted January 24, 2007 Posted January 24, 2007 I remember hearing somewhere that you do not need to be a member of Costco to use their Optical services. Might be worth calling to inquire.

I had my last eye examination at Costco. I don't have a membership, but my brother and SIL do so I just got into the store with them.
petsgive Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 I think even costco is a rip off where eyeglasses are concerned. I have had eye exams done by a Optholmologist ( through my Health Insurance) copay 20$.Then went to an eyeglass store got measurements for my eye glasses.(just one visit 3 yrs ago)Then started ordering my eyeglasses through Zenni (http://zennioptical.com/cart/home.php).At 30$/pair rimless, titanium. The quality was good, lasted 1 year,I broke a pair and ordered another , still wearing them. For my son's Glasses, I did the same (Pediatric opthal visit) followed by eye glass size from the Optical shop. Then ordered 2 pairs of gold Flexible Titanium polycarbonate eyeglasses from www.eyeglassdirect.com for about 170$ ( 80$/pair + shipping).(Kids require polycarbonate lense material to hold up against the rough and tough play)He has been using it for the last 1 and a half years with no problems. http://www.eyeglassdirect.com/children-eyeglasses/fkids/flexibletitanium24/3080/Gold/Single_Vision.html

How do you go about getting measurements for glasses. Will the eyeglass store do this for free.
sribee Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 Last weekend my daughter and I went to America's Best. Their deal was 2 pair for 70 + tax and included a free eye exam. Didn't need the eye exam since the pediatric opth took care of that. Asked if they'd check my eyes instead, but they didn't. :-( Takes about 5 bus. days for the glasses to come in. I signed up for the protection plan (normally wouldn't have but the glasses were cheap to begin with, and the coverage was for anything except loss or theft) and the antiglare coating My total was: 2 glasses - 70 anti-refl coating (for 2 glasses) - 35 1 yr protection (for 2 glasses - 15 TOTAL: 120 + tax Will post an update when we actually get the glasses. I asked if he'd look at the pair she had on and fix the transparent thingie that fits on the nose - and he went ahead and replaced both of them (even tho' we'd not bought that pair from them). Here's the link to them: www_twopair_com

UPDATE ....Sorry for the delayed update. 1 pair came within 6 days but the other one took about 8 days. Other than that (was told 5 bus. days) very pleased with the service. drmad7 Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 I go there and use the doc and I have bought glases and contacts. Love themI think they are the cheapest place I can find Focus monthly torics. This may not apply to anyone, but I just ordered Focus Dailies from Sam's Club on Monday, February 5th. A 90-lens box was only $19.xx! I was ordering them on Sunday and the people know me pretty well. They suggested I wait another day to order the lenses. They received a memo from corporate letting them know that the next day, the price was gonna drop from the regular $37.xx a box. Because of some issues with Cibavision and they don't know how long the price will last. I ordered 4 boxes and may order some more when those boxes come in! The price of Focus Torics and other Cibavision lenses may be lower also. It wouldn't hurt to ask, even at Costco.
