digman6 Posted October 7, 2006 Posted October 7, 2006 My Dh loves Xmas to say the least! We always have lots and lots of lights outside. we look like the chevy chase mive Xmas vacation outside. It was 2 years ago my Dh went to help his sister at her restaurant and I went to a xmas show with my kids. I came home and it smelled like something was burning. the kids and myself started smelling around and find what it was. we had out tree up but it was not finsihed so there were no lights plugged in for that. we found the smell behind our tree which made no sense to us at all. I called my Dh and said get your butt home there is something burning behind the wall:shock: . he came home and his BIL came with they looked around and checked the outlet the outlet cover started to MELT !!!!!!!!! we hit the circuit beaker and tied off the wires in the outlet. here the one outlet worked the outside and inside ( older home) with all my DH lights hooked up to that spot it started to melt things- outlet covers!! that outlet is no longer usable/ but DH still uses lots of lights just uses more out side outlets then he used to.
Gporter34 Posted October 8, 2006 Posted October 8, 2006 I use alot of lights, candy canes, and decorations. The kids get irritated because all of the outside decorations go up Nov. 1st here. As do all of the trees, wreaths, and garland. I use three of the huge inflatables (Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, and Mickey Mouse.
Ripn Posted October 8, 2006 Posted October 8, 2006 We won our neighborhood Griswold competition in 95. But in 1997, we were robbed on New Years Eve & lost about $700 worth of decorations. We got lucky tho, as I mistakenly left our garage door open after backing in. They never entered the house, just took Christmas stuff outside. It just hasn't been the same since then.
cotejb Posted October 8, 2006 Posted October 8, 2006 This is my first year to have a house, so I'm not sure what I'll do... :)

copados1993 Posted October 8, 2006 Posted October 8, 2006 We are buying a new house this month and it will not be landscaped unitl next spring. So, this year I'm not really sure what lights we will do. I know that I will put greens with bows out all of our front windows. Anyone have any suggestions for some decorating this year?? I'd love some ideas. I really am very disappointed not getting to decorate bushes this year with white lights.
Ripn Posted October 8, 2006 Posted October 8, 2006 how terrible. prolly some kids!Yes, bad part was, it snowed on the next morning so there wasn't any trace of them at all. Wife and I were outside taking stuff down, and I asked her...did you already get this and that...she was like. Umm, NO!It was then we called the police. When the officer came out, he asked us how we even knew something was missing, since there was still so much out there. It's all good, whoever got the stuff, will get what's coming to them eventually :) Our tastes have changed anyway...most stolen stuff was hard plastic decorations, we now set up those blow-up nylon types. Those are what many people use around here nowadays.
glitterstarr Posted October 8, 2006 Posted October 8, 2006 I don't do tons of lights but where I live I am about the only one who does lights outside. It is 2 other houses that do outside things but not as much as I do.
Cecilliadb Posted October 8, 2006 Posted October 8, 2006 No, not a ton I like to frame things mostly like windows, doors and garage door and along the edge of the roof with lights and or greenery and bows.
elena_398 Posted October 8, 2006 Posted October 8, 2006 No, I don't do lights on the house. (not a lot anyway). We have a projector that goes on the garage that does different christmas displays and colors and lights on the deck, but thats about it. Our neighbors go crazy though as does most of our street so even though we may not have a lot of lights, our house is still lit up!
ms_mckenna Posted October 8, 2006 Posted October 8, 2006 We do the all the eves and overhangs. I think this year after Christmas we are going to try and find a lighted santa, sleigh, and reindeers for our roof for next year. We do a ton in the house but we never leave or go to bed with any of them on ... except for Christmas eve. But DH and I are usually up most of that night anyway.
Melissa Posted October 8, 2006 Posted October 8, 2006 Not a ton. We keep it simple and tasteful. We also like to put up things that are easy to dismantle, because that's the part we hate!
tinydancer34 Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Because I do all of the holiday decorating, there is a single candle in each front window. DH would love more decorations on the outside, but won't go out and do it. That's the reason I don't do outside ones, either - I hate the cold weather! LOL I think he'd loving having a Chevy Chase house, though!
blakes_mommy Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 NOt a ton but enough to get the kids excited..
bayhaysay Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 No, we might do a some lights on the porch this year but that will be about it.
JazzMama Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 No - we have the large bulbs in red/white, so we have them going around the four columns on the front porch and along the roofline. Then, there are red/white icicle lights on the roof peak. The boxwoods are alternated in red/white lights to get a candy cane effect. There are four lighted candy cane stakes in the flower bed between the boxwoods. The only other main lawn decoration is our inflatable snowman.

Stowasser Posted October 9, 2006 Posted October 9, 2006 Looks like our house, I put out alot, won last year third place, was disappointed because half the stuff wasn't out (Montana gets in the negative numbers in Dec) yet since it was so cold. I am going to work on getting it going after Thanksgiving so that its out for the judges by Dec5th.....I do the fence, yard displays, outside Christmas trees (great find, artifical ones from garage sales, just put outside lights on it, usually people will even give you them!), On the eves of the house, around all windows with garland and lights, around garage doors with garland and lights....Well, anywhere I can find to decorate....Yes, I go overboard but hey someone has too!
happysunshine28 Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 I am too lazy to put out lights. I like driving around and look at them.
Illinoismom Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 I do lights but I also have three inflatables, one globe, two trees, and a bunch of other stuff, last year I added an arch way, not sure what I will add this year, My neighbor and I joke she does Halloween and I take care of both houses at Christmas as I have to put some on the edge between both our yards, I will try this year to take pictures,
disneytati Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 Oh, my God....... I am so jealous.... I just love Xmas, but here the decorations aren't so beautiful as up there. I mean... people down here have a different view about Xmas, and they think that listening to xmas songs is ridiculous, there aren't Xmas clothes to buy (like those cute sweaters you guys have up there) and few people decorate their houses outside like you guys do. Some people have their balconies trimmed with lights, but very little. Such things are just too expensive here. This year, when I go up there for BF, I'll try to bring some neon decorations for my apartment window.
disneytati Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 http://dingo.care2.com/pictures/c2c/galleries/cache/derivative/3/5/3565984.jpg You tell me:tongue1:Oh, WOW!!!!! How do you get to put up those lights on your roof???????
monkey Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 We love Christmas!!!!!!!!! The last count was over four thousand lights on the outside. DH decorates the outside and I take care of the inside. He has several large displays for the front yard and the roof of the house could get mistaken as a runway for an airplane.
